BUTLER COMPANY INC., OHLINGER’S, OF DAVID CITY ORGANIZATIONS THE HUSKY BAND We arc living in the age of Aquarius, so the song says, and the Shelby Husky Marching Band knows it. The word aquarius signifies wa- ter. Band Day in Lincoln brought the first opportunity for the Marching Huskies to perform, sporting their beautiful new uniforms and hats. Homecoming gave the Band their first chance to perform for the hometown crowd. The Band performed at all the home football games this year with a pre-game and a half-time show, another first for the Marching Huskies. The Pep Band then took over for the basketball sea- son continuing to support the teams in T. J. Brass style. The Band had their first taste of marching competition at Harvest of Harmony in Grand Island. This moist chilly day also brought the Hus- kies good luck, receiving hon- ors in marching competition. November 2, 1968, State Marching Contest was defi- nitely a turning point for the ground pounders. The band was one of the three Class D Bands out of eight in the State receiving a Superior rating and a big beautiful trophy. Incidentily, close examina- tion of the trophy will reveal water spots due to either rain- drops or tears of joy. At the Crossroads Confer- ence Band Festival held in York, the Shelby musicians worked hard and as a result won five first chair positions out of a total of fifteen. Thus concludes a very suc- cessful chapter for the Shelby Husky Band, truly living in the Age of Aquarius. Hie Shelby High Auditorium on May 13, 1969, was the scene of the annual SHS Band Banquet. A delicious variety of foods were assembled by the parents of the Bandsmen and the faculty. Following the dinner, a brief history of the 68 G 69 Husky Band happenings was given by Mr. Adams. Presentation of awards to the Superior rated soloists and members of ensembles followed, those receiving recognition were: Bob Buchholz for his baritone solo, Susan Rosenberry for her Baritone Sax Solo, the Drum Ensemble, and the Saxophone Quartet. The two graduating Seniors, Kathy Hatt and Marv Graff, were presented with Band pins from the Band Mothers. Marv, the Band President, presented Mr. Adams with a gift in appreciation for all he has done to strengthen the spirit and sportsmanship of the Band. The second part of the evening hosted three surprise guest soloists. Mr. O'Brien on the Trombone raised the roof to the tune of TROMBONIC RAPSODY. Mr. Fusco made himself heard on the Vibraphone, and Mr. Adams demonstrated some expert drumming to HUMORES- CAPADE. The songs played by the Band were directed by six different student directors. The evening was con- cluded to the victorious beat of the NOTRA DAME VICTORY MARCH better known as SCHOOL SONG. The Band Mothers should surely be congratulated for sponsoring such a great evening. Student director, Bob Buchholz is seen leading the Band through one of its tunes. SEATED at the head table were the Band Officers, Seniors, President of the Band Mothers, and Mr. G Mrs. Adams. The table was decorated with the new State Marching Contest Trophy, and other honors the Band has received this year. Mothers of the Juniors prepared the meal which was served in a dining room walled off by crepe paper streamers. The entrance wall was thatched with huge palm leaves. Palm trees, sea shells, and the ocean in the back- ground decorated the gym and carried out the theme, Tropical Isle. Barefoot waiters and waitresses were dressed in bright colored costumes suitable for the tropics. The dance featured a combo The Brass Tones. Following the grand march, a son and mother, daughter and father special number honored the parents of the Classes of 69 G 70. Helen and Murray enjoy the dance. TROPICAL On May 3, 1969, the Juniors entertained the Seniors and Faculty at the SHS Junior-Senior Banquet. The gym was turned into a Tropical Island, decorated with grass huts, palm trees, a waterfall, sea shells, and fish net. Each guest received a Hawaiian welcome presented with a lei. Adding At the head table were seated those who participated in the program. Murray Smith, President of the Junior Class, acted as toastmaster for the occasion. 44 Following the grand march, this dance was dedicated to the Juniors and Seniors. much beauty to the evening was an Anther- ium plant, flown in from Hawaii, by Mr. and Mrs. Bud Abbott, in memory of their son Doug. This was truly an occasion which the Seniors will remember and cherish. The Junior girls provided the entertainment by singing their rendition of Bali Hai, thinking quote; Shut up baby we're trying to sing. The comer of the gym was decorated with a waterfall and a wishing well, accented by gen- uine, artifical palm trees. luxury We're some of the special class that rode on the same bus as Paul Revere the Raiders. SNEAK DAY On May 15th the 14 Seniors left for groovey Colorado Springs, Colorado, for SOME weekend. After spending Thursday night and early Friday morn- ing, playing cards, eating, dancing down the isles of that swinging bus, and setting the record for having 14 kids in the rest room of the bus, we arrived at the Broadmoor. Would you believe it? Once we got settled in our rooms, we were all ready to go again! While in Colorado we visited the Air Force Academy, the Garden of the Gods, Seven Falls, and the Cave of the Winds. Saturday we took the bus up- town for a shopping trip, and don't for- get to inquire about the Village Idiot? That evening we all enjoyed steaks in a popular restaurant, which featured a floor show. Sunday morning we left the elegant Broadmoor, for dear old Shelby. This ended a trip that will never be forgotten. Our ever faithful bus driver, John Cannon, got us through thick and thin. This is the Broadmoor, famous for their natural scenic surroundings, and one of America's most famous resort hotels. The snow-topped mountain is Pikes Peak. FOOTBALL 68 The 1968 football season was a very pleasant surprise to most Husky followers. With all starters lost by graduation and only three returning lettermen, the prospects for a good season were slim. The final result of eight wins and one loss to the top rated team in Class D 8-Man football showed die desire and spirit of die team. Several transfers helped greatly in this winning season. The hopes for another fine season in 1969 are high with all starters returning. BASKETBALL Despite a dismal record of two wins and eighteen losses, the basketball team ended on a happy note. In district play die Huskies were a surprise as they defeated Hampton and pushed Gresham into overtime before falling by a four point margin. Team spirit was good all season as underclassmen dominated the varsity. A lack of height, shooting, and experience was a big factor in losing so many games. However die return of ten let- termen bolster hopes for a better record next year. We want two, Drew ! ! 55 Our faithful coaches: John O'Brien and Terry Fusco. VOLLEYBALL The 1968-69 Volleyball Season was fairly successful. The girls finished with a season of 10 wins and 5 losses. This in- cludes beating a fine volleyball team from Bradshaw for third place in the Crossroads Conference Volleyball Tournament. Two girls from this years tieam were nominated all-confer- ence. Kathy Trout received a second team nomination for all- conference and Diane Schlesinger was picked first team all- conference. The team had its ups and downs, losing to some teams that they should have beaten. This can be expected of a young team with only one graduating Senior, they should be able to smooth out the ups and downs thus increasing their win record. The 1969 Shelby Track Season was a re- building year, as the squad was dominated by underclassmen. However the leadership of graduating Seniors Bill [.arson and Dennis Kubicek will be missed. Several new school records were set. They are: Pole Vault, Two Mile Run, Two Mile Relay, and Triple Jump. The following were new events run this year and are also new school records: 440 Yard Relay, 280 Yard High Hurdle Shuttle Relay, 480 Yard Low Hurdle Shuttle Relay, Sprint Medley Relay, and Distance Medley Relay. IN MEMORIAM There comes a time for all of us When we must say good-bye, But faith and hope and love and trust Can never, never die, Although the curtain falls at last Is that a cause to grieve? DOUGLAS DEAN ABBOTT 1949-1969 There's a regular guy, we all recall, He was handsome, sturdy, brave, and tallj He played the game, 'twas fair and square, For everyone knew Old Doug was there. His winning ways, and twinkling eye- Charmed all the girls, as he passed by; In class and at every school affair, Everyone knew Old Doug would be there. Although he was tall, he was tried and true- He looked up to all the old folks he knew; To the aged he'd give a hand, most anywhere, They all knew Old Doug was there. Then, alas, came that fatal day When God called our old pal away; He had a place for him in that land so fair, We all know Old Doug is happy there. Mamie Kuntzelman 64 JHfc :' t'?'
