THE 1967 HUSKY Shelby High School Shelby, Nebraska Richard Alt and Kathy McKeag, Co-editors Mrs. Marietta Peters, Advisor i this page sponosred Bv SHELBY BEAUTY SALON AMERICAN LEGION, shelby. Dedication We the 1967 Annual Staff, in this Nebraska State Centennial Year, dedicate The Husky to the achievement of our states' pioneers and to the heritage they built for us. Because of their toil, hardship, and determination, Nebraska grew into the great state it now is. Also, and especially, we dedicate this book to the youth of our school, our community, and our state on whose shoulders lies the future of Nebraska. Administration Makes School Policies Members of the Board of Education and Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Romaine Pesicka, determine school policies and help connect the school board grow as the school system con- tinues to grow. One of the primary responsibilities of the Board of Edu- cation is the hiring of all school personnel. Improvements to our school system have been made this year. Physical improvements include the repainting of several portions of the school building. Next year the school system will change to a K-6-6 plan. Many government programs have been entered into to help provide funds. New maps and library books have been purchased with these gov- ernment appropriations. A summer enrichment program for elementary children in grades 3,4,5, and 6 has been scheduled for June. This also is with government aid. Marching Musicians Rate Excellent I Twirler Sandi Krumbach, Head-Majorettes Candice Taddiken and Debbie Boss, and twirler Kathleen Krumbach led the Huskies' marching band. After hours of hard work and prepa- ration the band journeyed to Lincoln to compete in the State Marching Contest on October 29. They received an excellent rating at the contest. Hometown fans were well aware of the band's marching abilities because of their performances at home football games. Through hard work on timing and routine performances, the band members were able to execute their half-time performances with great precision. The pep band also performed before basketball games and at half-time. This not only sparked the team, but also pro- vided extra entertainment for the fans. During the school year the band gave a concert for the public. It was well conducted and very well-attended. It also supplied a lift to the Centennial Box Social by playing old-time favorites. On April 20 and 21, the music depart- ment journeyed to Albion for the District Music Contest. Listed are the groups that participated and their ratings. A highlight of the trip was a tour of the Air Force Academy guided by Cadet Lester Gabriel of Osceola. Here the group is shown looking at a scale model of the Academy. T Jr; ill After climbing 250 steps at Seven Falls it was necessary for Greg and Margene to cool their feet in a mountain stream. One thing the Seniors will not readily forget is the trip to Seven Falls and the many steps we climped to reach the top. For three days the Seniors enjoyed the elegance and style of the famed Broadmoor Hotel. The entire class was accommodated on one floor with three persons to a suite. By chartered Arrow Stage Lines the Seniors reached Colorado early Friday morning after spending ten hours on the bus. The monotony of travel is clearly shown on the faces of these two Seniors 40 THIS PAGE IS SPONSORED BY SHELBY HOTEL DEFENSIVE TEAM: Left to Right: Richard Alt, Kevin Abbott, Dan Wombacher, Mike Voss, Bob Treadway, Wayne Schlesinger. Success in having a winning season and failure in failing to win the Thunderbird Conference Championship. The Huskies finished second in the Con- ference losing the title game to Humphery at the end of the year. The Huskies coached by John O'Brien were underdogs at the beginning of the season, but came up with surprising victories over high-fired conference teams. Eighteen Huskies lettered this season of which eleven will return next season with a favorable outlook for another winning season.
