Assistant Editor Annual Staff 8 HISTORY In looking back through tha annuals of former years, we seniors find that Judy Blevins, Sandra McMeekin, Joan Hass- elbaloh, Kenneth Kubicek, Janet Knight, Janice Kerkman, and Lee Clatter were the members of the timid little first grade of Shelby in 1914-6. JoAnn Scholz Joined the group in 19 8. During our grade school life we were Joined by Judy Harris and Carol Carter both of California, but the latter later moved to Columbus, Randall Slinonsen from Osceol% Joined the class, but left during his seventh year. Robert Whitmore from District 21, left in the fourth year only to return in his seventh. Shirley Paulsen came into our class from Omaha, and Ann tfombacher from Lawrence, Nebraska. During our sixth year we lost a beloved classmate, Janice Kerkman, who passed away. Sue Doty left in her sev- enth year to attend school In Tekamah, Nebraska, but re- turned the freshmen year. With all our childhood memories behind us we were ready to take the next step in our climb to the top of the ladder. Anxiously awaiting the beginning of our freshmen year, we were joined by Dennis Feeser, Larry Augustin, uennis Prell, Kenneth Kuhnel, Karen Thelen, Janet Dunning, Sharon- Deden, Janice Alt, and Joyce Scow, who left at the end of her junior year. Norma Keeler then joined us In the fall of 1956. Dennis Prell left at the end of his freshmen year. The mighty seniors of that year greeted us with a hearty welcome. The class composed themselves and elected as class oficers Judy Harris, president; Sue Doty, vice- president; Sandra, McMaekin, secretary; and Joan Hassel- balch, treasurer. Our subjects were science, general mathematics, English and shop. Our class sponsor was Ruby Young. With the caption of green freshiea cast aside, we pushed onward Into our sophomore year. Robert Whitmore, president; Joan Hasselbalch, vice-presidsnt; Sharon Deder secretary; and Ann Wombacher, treasurer; were elected. The new subjects were world history, home making, alge- bra, and drivers education. Delores Cochran was our spon- sor. Awaiting us now was the title of upperclassmen. The jovial group once again climbed the next step to advancement. Officers elected for the junior year were Larry Augustin, president; Judy Harris, vice-president; Joyce Scow,' secre- tary; and Sandra McMeekin, treasurer. Mr. Johnson was our sponsor for this year. There was now more of a choice in choosing a specific course. Highlights of the junior year were the receiving of class rings, the class play, Three Blind Dates , and the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom. The theme for this bright, cheerful occasion was Candyland . We finally reached the top of the ladder as the Mighty Seniors of 195u. Senior officers were Judy Harris, presi- dent; Sandra McMeekin, vice-president; Janice Alt, seoretarj and Janet Dunning, treasurer. We selected as class colors, blue and white, and the carnation as the class flower. Early In the year we had our pictures taken in Hastings Outstanding memories of this year were the publishing of the school paper, compiling of the Annual, the enjoying of the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom, and the presenting of the Senior Play. After all of these events we anxiously looked forward to Baccalaurette and Commencement. Thus we conclude the history of the Mighty Seniors of 9 CLASS PROPHECY Shelby, Nebraska, was the sight of the first rocket ship landing from Mara in 1970. Millions of people from all over the world came to observe this wonderous event. My family and I were among the spectators on that event- ful day in June. The President of the United States, Robert Whitmore, who was the youngest man ever to become president, gave an over- whelming speech on the launching of this rocket a year pre- vious to the landing of it. J V When President Whitmore finished speaking, a crowd of people began gathering around him to congratulate him. 1 Joined this group without realizing they were all for- mer classmates. My good friend, Judy Harris, now known as Miss Judith, world renown cosmetologist, was present. Judy and I had met often before, as she was my hair stylist when I was a dra- matic star on television. More and more memories came back as I saw Sandra McMeekin. After talking to Sandra, I learned that, after graduating from the Minneapolis School of Business, she obtained the position of secretary to the president of General Motors. Sandra told me she was happily married. Upon talking to President Whitmore, I noticed two of his personal secretaries standing near-by. A second glance re- vealed they were Janet Dunning and Shirley Paulsen. They certainly had obtained the highest position in the secre- tarial field. Suddenly, a tall, dark, handsome man strolled over to whore Judy Blevins, now a famous artist in picturesque Can- ada, and I were talking. It was Larry Augustin, owner of a massive cattle ranch in Texas. We three renewed old friendships and after awhile, Janice Alt Joined ua. Janice had attended Mount Marty College in South Dakota and had become a home economics teacher in a new college in Florida. Others began Joining us; one of whom was Norma Jean Keel- er. She had just flown in from Paris, France, where she had been teaching high school mathematics. It seems the class of '58 produced several teachers. An- other was JoAnn Scholz who became an elementary teacher. Kenny Kuhnel could not seem to get a word in edgewise. I guess he never could, as far as women were concerned. He finally drew me aside to say he had become a leader in the field of rocket ship experimentations. Kenny had helped in the study of the rocket that was due to land at any moment The State Game Commissioner, Lee Glatter, joined Kenny and I. I suddenly burst out with laughter when I recalled how Lee had occasionally played hooky in order to go hunting and fishing. Everything became still and quiet; then beautiful music floated through the air. All eyes turned toward the stage where former classmate, Karen Thelen, was playing the piano, she had become a concert pianist and in her spare time, taught others her skill. ’ The concert was soon over but we were all interested in hearing of Karen's concert tours in foriegn countries. Our visiting was interrupted by the loud roar of a car. Only Sharon Deden could have a car that noisy. Sure enough it was. I was surprised to see she was driving a beautiful, now, maroon Mercury. I walked over to the car and found an- other classmate. Sue Doty, with Sharon. After talking to Sue, I found out that she had attended Wyoming State Teachers College and acquired an elementary certificate, and was teaching in Laramie, Wyoming. Her famed husband became pro-basketball player, so Sue is kept busy. I learned also that Sharon resides in Wyoming, where she is quite prominent in the field of advertising. The class of '58 seemed, then, all present and we were so busy talking, the rocket landing occurred unnoticed by any of us. It was not until after the landing that we realized on® classmate was absent, Dennis Peeser. We soon knew why, for when the door of the rocket opened, out stepped Dennis, looking like he had just awakened from a sound sleep. Dermis joined us and began relating his experiences on the rocket. It seems he had gone along to see if it were possible to sleep in outer space. As I recall, Dennis always did enjoy sleeping, especially in classes and study halls. All too soon our classmates began departing, each going to his or her respective home. Larry and I, with our two children decided to return to our California home, taking back with us never-to-be-for- gotten memories of this happy and historical occasion. 11 JUNIORS Back row-Juanita Rinko, Oary Coffin, Gary Hernblooa, Joroae Schol , Ho go rTKon, Larrj Kuwph, Corky Schloainger Front row-Hlni Coffin, Jo Ann Qlattor, Maura on Kresbaob, Rodney Prusa, Kenneth Ruble ok, Aaron Subleek, Janet Knight, Linda Braith— wait, Carol Salth. The kindergarden found surprises in their new class room experiences all along the way. They found their most enjoyment in working among their newly made com- panions . Each class enjoyed having parents visit on Patrons Day. The classes displayed work they had accomplished during the first nine weeks. First and Second graders added a sparkle to their school work with the coming of each season. Their class work and art was closely allied to Mother Nature. Industrial art has been closely associated with the fifth graders class room work. The eighth graders are looking forward to their graduation in the spring. The most spectacular ac- complishment for the grade school was the Christmas program they presented under the direction of Music Dir- ector, Godfrey Machal. 19 20 FOOTBALL Back row Jerome Scholz, Corky Schleainger, Lorry Augustin.
