The Bus- ies had the finest spirit, ability, and will to win this year that Shelby had for a long time. Shelby Huskies ended up with five wins two loses and one tie game. The Huskies placed second in the Little Six Conference. Shelby was rated 16 out of 120 six-man teams in the state. The second team which played one game only this season won 20-12. 8 9 Basketball Winged Huskies Standing- Coach Colling, Rodney Pruss. Seven members c f the Junior Class took part in the play. A large crowd attended the play, which was given the night of Patron's Day. The arrival of class rings in November was a great event fbr the Juniors. This class is ambi- tious to accumulate money for unusual activities for their Senior year. They have had food sales, paper drives, a pie social, a square dance, and sold special day cards. 27 Junior-Senior Prom And Banquet K1 j A sidewalk cafe in Gay Paree was the theme of the 1955 Junior-Senior Banquet. The banquet was held April 27, in the Methodist Church basement. An illusion of a sidewalk cafe was created through the use of a red and white striped canopy with matching cloths on the cafe style tables. Grey flagstone walls brightened with red roses added reality to the scene. A delicious dinner was prepared by the Juniors' mo- thers. Judy Blevins, Larry Augustin, Sharon Deden, Ken- neth Kuhnel, Sue Doty, and Robert Whitmore, Freshmen in gay Parisian garb, served at the sidewalk cafe tables. During the meal the guests enjoyed a program of musical numbers and toasts by students and faculty members. After the banquet a prom was held in the parish hall. Swing Kings Orchestra furnished the music. 28 Seniors | 29 Ronald Vakoc Ron r- . - vL Sec.-Treasurer iff 1 I Richard Eller ’'Dick Student Council Eugene Reisdorff Pee Wee Student Council 31 I 33 Newspaper And Annual Staff Spectator Staff Editor-in-chief—— Page Reporters Art Sports———— p.f.a. In witness therof, we the mighty Seniors of 1956 seal this will in the year of our Lord 1956. 35 Class History Looking back ttirough the years we find that Myron Hiemer is the only member of our Senior Class of 195° who began school in Shelby. Larry Punkhouser joined the class as a second grader, and in our third year we welcomed Jerry McMeekin and Bob Jostes. Our ranks increased in the fourth grade when Keith Walden and Jerry Peterson enrolled; but in the fifth year we lost Bob Jostes. Howard Whitmore and Ann Kosch entered as sixth graders; however that same year Jerry Peterson moved away. In the seventh grade Howard Whitmore and Jerry Peterson re-entered our class at the beginning of the second semester. Deloras Miell entered our class that same year, but moved to the country in the spring. Bob Jostes and Howard Whitmore re-entered our class in the second semester of the eighth year. Ronald Vakoc, of Columbus, also joined our class at this time. As green freshies our class was enlarged by eleven rur- al students. Sharon Coffin entered from District 1; Deloras Miell, 15; Gene Scow and Marge Ingalls, 20; Janet Kuhnel and Eugene Reisdorff, 21; Kay Taddiken, 22; Dick Eller, Jerry McMeekin, and Eugene Brase, 52; and JuLee Albers, 63. Deloras Miell moved away at the second semester of our freshman year. Eugene Brase was fatally wounded in a tractor accident in the summer of 53 Jerry McMeekin went west in his soph- omore year. Bob Jostes left us in the beginning of our junior year. Myrna Krebsbach was married in the summer of our senior year, thus did not return. The senior class therefore, as it ends its high school days includes the following members: JuLee Albers, Sharon Coffin, Dick Eller, Larry Punkhouser, Myron Hiemer, Marge Ingalls, Ann Ko3ch, Janet Kuhnel, Jerry Peterson, Eugene Reisdorff, Gene Scow, Kay Taddiken, Ron Vakoc, Keith Wald- en, and Howard Whitmore. 36 I Class Prophecy As I herd my old 3 Chevolet down the new sixteen lane highway, I decide to motor to my old home town Shelby, and see how things are coming along, Ju3t as I start to think about getting across the high- way, some crazy critter decides to show off with his car la '63, Float Mobile. The stupid old car of mine spit, spit and finally, so badly frightened, the poor old thing stopped. I climbed out of her and was so mad I yelled my tiny voice at the fellow in the Float Mobile. He wheeled the thing around and at a good fast speed climbed out. I was about to give him a piece of my mind when he Just started to laugh that silly old laugh. I pushed up my specks and about fell head over heels with delight to see the one and only Myron Heimer. Myron and I had a good old hearty handshake and after a few Jokes, I asked him what he was doing. He told me that he had a farm and was doing quite well as I could see by his car. After talking with Myron,my old car got calmed down and off I went again. I saw a parking place just big enough for my car as I came into town. It just happened to be in front of the Barber Shop. I got out and walked into the shop to see if it would be possible to send my jacket to the cleaners. As I started to ask about the jacket, I noticed the shoe shine boy had on a navy uniform, and another sailor was having his shoes shined. Here to my great surprise was Pudge (Larry) Funkhouser shining Ronnie Vakoc shoes. I talked awhile with them and found that both Ronnie and Pudge were stationed in San Diego, California. I asked Pudge why he was still shining shoes. He said he liked the job so well when he was in high school, and found it a good way to make a few dollars while on furlough. I then put my car in gear and jaunted down toward the high school to see how things had changed. As I was walk- ing from the parking lot to the school, some one slammed the door of the gym, and out walked Ann Kosch. It seems that Ann herself had great interests in teaching music and indulged herself at Shelby. As we were talking, I asked what big building that was across from the school. She said that it was the new Shady Lane Rest Home, and that Sharon Coffin was in charge. I asked what ever happened to JuLee Albers and I was informed she was assistant nurse at the Rest Home. It seems 37 that JuLee and Sharon attended nurses training together after graduating from high school. As it was around noon I became hungry and decided to stop at a little restaurant up town. I was just getting waited on when in walked a handsome farmer. I was about to start a bit of flirting when I happened to recognize the face as none other then Gene Scow. Gene said that he had two farms with irrigation on both. I asked what ever happened to Howard Whitmore and found out that he wa3 a flyer. He had joined the Air Force and was flying a little piper cub. He always said he'd like to fly a Jet, but seems he hadn't quite made it. He also told me Marge Ingalls was his stewardess. I then left Gene, telling him it was a real pleasure to see him again. I bought a paper and settled down on a bench and started to read. I turned to the sports page and was surorised to see a big old burly Swede staring at me. I read the article under the picture and learned that the Swede was Jerry Peterson. He was full-back for the Nebraska Huskies and seemed to be very outstanding in his football career. Reading on, I found that PeeWee (Eugene) Relsdorff was the fastest half-back in the United States. It seemed that no one could get hold of that player when he started out. I was just finishing the paper when a tall man wearing a Wesleyan University sweater walked by me. I recognize the man as our own Woody (Keith) Walden. It seems that Keith is an Assistant Professor at Wesleyan. I guess teaching Just runs in his family. I asked what ever happened to Kay Taddiken and he said that she was a teacher at Wesleyan too, teaching the cheer- leaders to cheer. As I remember she did that quite well at Shelby High. The day was about at its end, so I decides I'd better be off. I had no more than got out of the parking space when a loud mooing sound caught my ears. I glanced around and noticed a long semi-truck on my bumper. The truck had a load full of long horn steers. The driver was Dick Eller. He climbed down from the cab and we had a long talk. Dick said he had taken over his dad's trucking. He had two big cattle ranches in Texas and brought his dad truck loads of long horns. It was dark so I got out my matches to light the candles in my car head lights. Remembering my secretarial position in Lincoln, I figured I should be on my way back to work. 38 Best Wishes To The Senior Class of 1955 Shelby High School Osceola Record Polk County's Family Newspaper Boyd Hardware Co.
