The work begins in the summer before school starts when the girls create a week- long day-care camp for local underprivileged and handicapped children. The camp has rea- wakened the child in as many Civinettes as it has in real children. The black and go ld streamers on ever car antenna or door handle on Football Fridays is evidence of Civinettes who sacrificed their lunch periods to contrib- ute to the Lions’ spirit. The girls also contrib- ute to friendship development by offering for sale lollipop corsages and valentine cupcakes that they deliver with a happy accompanying message to anyone in the school. The guid- ance office bulletin board is the result of artis- tic Civinettes. Desserts secretely delivered to a different teacher each week are from the Civi- nette Chefs. The Powder Puff Room is the Civi- nettes part of Junior-Senior Prom decoration, and they produce their own ‘Senior Follies”’ variety show at the close of the year. Civi- nette Club is a leading example of all SHS service clubs because each year the girls try to include ‘‘just one more project.”’ ay “| oe “i EE Ria amas First Row — Donna Randall, Lynn Hicks, Susan Starnes, Susan Shull, Amanda Baxter, Jean Summers, Vicki Latham. Extraordinary voices, new uses of the audito- rium facilities for special effects, and an exhausted (and exasperated) director helped make the musical one that the Shelby audience will remember long after they lose their programs and forget the stars’ names. The Sound of Music became a community event, as Shelbi- ans were caught up in the excitement and exhiliration. Selling out at every perform- ance, the show became the most successful musical ever produced by Shelby High. Drama lives at SHS! 81 LCL TTITTO LES ea oa “The Shelby High Drama Department is alive and rehearsing in the auditorium fonight! ’ This message is true nearly any time of the year. Productions follow one another so rapidly that the participating students hardly have time to perfect one character before a new play and new characters arise. Nevertheless, all the fun and good experience the students get from these performances bring them back time after time to put the show on ‘“‘just one more time.” THE SHOW, in the Spring and Fall of 1978, was a showcase for any hidden talents among SHS students. The Saga of Sagebrush Sal was a conglomerate old western, hero versus villain, barroom piano, and dancing girls audience-participation play. The Senior Play for 1978, Pure As The Driven Snow, was much in the same vein as the previous Saga. Again a story of the hero and the villain, the play aroused some unsuspected talent, making singers and actors of the school’s unlikliest artists and assorted shy people. Acting is Believing! sy Romantic Nights, 4 City Lights The 1977-78 juniors dutifully spent hours away from homework to develop the magnificent Romantic Nights, City Lights of the Junior-Senior Prom. A park — nestled deep within the pulsing, bright city — was the 1978 fantasyland built in honor of the graduating seniors. Good music, good company, and good imagination make an unforgettable evening for juniors and seniors alike. Homecoming The Bonfire, Spirit Week, the parade — they are all part 9 Shelby High’s Homecoming. All the preparation, practices, anq picture-taking led up to Friday night, October 6, and the mai event — the presentation of the homecoming court. Lee Mabry was presented with an armful of yellow roses g she was named Maid of Honor. The red roses and crown were for the queen, Sheila Mauney. These are honorary experiences for q pn approximately three students from each school in North Caro- lina. Phil and Kenneth went to Wake Forest University and Lee Ann went to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro to spend a week learning about democracy and the working of their government. They were saturated with lectures from guest speakers including members of the N.C. Legislature. They expe- rienced a mock government and elected its officials. This gave each of them a better understanding of the American Freedom and of the government that maintains this freedom. Last spring two Juniors were rewarded for their hard work and their attainment of the highest averages in U.S. history. The Woodmen of the World presented their award to Bill Tidwell, and Pat Sarazen received an award from the Daughters of the American Revolution. Each year, two citizenship awards are presented to rising sen- iors. The Shelby Civitan Club honors a boy, and the Shelby chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution honors a girl for good citizenship. As representatives of their school, this year Phil Blanton received the Civitan Citizenship Award, and Lee Ann Weems won the DAR Citizenship Award. Evidences of Phil’s and Lee Ann's good citizenship should arise again and again throughout the coming year. The Danforth ‘! Dare You’’ Award is one of the highest hon- ors a student can receive at Shelby High School. Scott Boyles and Vicki Latham were the Award winners for the 1977-1978 school year. The award recognizes one boy and one girl who show the most potential for eventual success in their lives. The Danforth Award is more than an honor: it is a challenge, a dare to make the most of every opportunity and the best of every sit- uation. Scott and Vicki will undoubtedly accept every dare and meet every challenge — and yet seek a higher hurdle. Each year, the John Motley Morehead Foundation presents scholarships to over one hundred graduating seniors who plan to study at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. These scholarships pay full expenses for tuition, room, books, food, and incidentals. The Morehead Scholarships are a senior's dream come true. This year, Shelby’s Vicki Latham, Pat Sar- azen, and Melanie Walker are nominees for the scholarship. These girls were selected on a criteria of superior grades, well- rounded participation in their school and community, and gen- eral leadership qualities. After being interviewed by a local selection committee, Vicki was selected to advance further in the competition, and Pat was selected as an alternate. = ™ ‘HE RNSERS EE ES iit: A a SBRKRRAREAR ER AA RAS’ SIBABIUDYW SU] English It was part of mother's first comforting words, but twenty years later finds the same English-speaking children in classes, learning to use the native language. Texas IncTRUMENTS Foreign Language After mastering the hurdle of English, the student finds an entirely new challenge awaiting him: foreign language. At Shelby High this challenge is met by the finest teachers and students imaginable. With courses ranging from consumer math to calcu- lus, every student can find a course in the math department to meet his needs. , History High school proves that history books are more than lists of the presidents’ names and the years in which they lived. Books of past events often predict that which the future holds. For the first time, stu- dents are realizing that newspapers and globes are important, because they are the tools for the discov- ery of a changing world: the boundaries shrink as the horizons expand, and the world becomes more familiar every day. 94 So Barbara Streisand did not sing first soprano with the SHS Chorus, Chuck Mangione did not play trumpet at the football games halftimes, and Lawrence Welk never added his violins to the SHS orchestra. But the blended talents of all the Shelby High musicians make exciting sounds that would impress the most trained professionals. Mr. Haworth, Mr. Poole, Mrs. Krause, and Mr. Ellis help make Shelby a music lover's heaven. 96 It is art for art's sake. The classes may be small, but the closeness of the students draws the Art Depart- ment into a tight unit. Each student works at his own pace, experiment- ing with such tools as plaster, inks, and paints. After all the work is done, the products are displayed for all to see at exhibits and competi- tions throughout Cleveland County. Library Many people expect the library to be the sin- gle tranquil spot in the entire school, but the con- stantly moving due-date stamp proves them wrong. The library is, of course, more than an inky due-date stamp smacking the back cover of books. Miss Rachel Smith and Mrs. Ruth Neal make magazines, films, books, and records _ become an active part of everyone's classes, whether they need research materials for their history term paper or a film on careers in medi- cine. The SHS library has it all. | i Business The business — it is more than learning which finger goes where on a typewriter or which funny little symbol stands for which word. It takes the development of skills to run the world of business smoothly, and at Shelby High, students are well pre- pared by such courses as typing, shorthand, and consumer math. Head Football Coach Jim Taylor led the Shelby High Lions to another victorious sea- son. The Golden Lions’ passing game was led by Brian Thompson, while the running game was led by Sim McMurry and Mark Wright. Seniors — Kenneth Howell, George Borders, Scott Meyers and John Woods — made a good showing as offensive play- ers. Defensive standouts include Todd Blanton, Ricky Hicks, Harvey McSwain, Kenneth Howell, Todd Bingham, and John Woods. Squeeze in one more English credit and you are there! You finally made it to the top rank of sophisticated senior! Perhaps you first realized your importance when that little sophomore smilingly carried your lunch tray in total fear for her life. You survived the junior year study blues, complete with history, and what surely must have been Algebra Vil. But reassure yourself that you know now what the Wampus Cats in Ohio are like; you can bend glass tubes to make your lab experiments look like abstract sculpture; and you can actually understand what x2y has been all these years. The classes are better. You found that your ‘ famous D for typing two words per minute Dora Padgett — Corresponding was wasted. The senior aura let you take typ- Secretary ing on pass fail so your English teacher will % never know you paid best friend Geraldene ten dollars to type your term paper. For some reason, your friends are so much more special than they could ever have been before. You stand at the end of the world; everything slips so fast. The girl you thought you'd marry since eighth grade is suddenly applying for a college in Florida, and your best football buddy is! going out of state to work in his grandfather's store. Can three years simply disappear in one night of graduation? No way. Shelby High will live in your mind forever. The girl will stay just as beautiful in your memory, and you will find her smile on a new face in the crowd. Your football buddy will reappear running around your favorite track some foggy morning. When all the bad has faded into shadows, you will pull out the memories of Wendy's, the thrill of touchdown after touchdown, the elation of a real A in Chemistry Il, and the funny warmth all over when you think of sweet Geraldene slaving over your illegible term paper. Aes Typical junior reaction — — a ae - vai | Be @gy You survived all the cries of ‘Poor Sophomore,’' and now you really have a chance to prove yourself before you earn the rank of senior. You are a junior. The chain-makers believe that you are the strongest link of the chain, for the sophomore links are new and shiny but inexpe- rienced, and the senior links are beginning to show wear and will soon break away from the chain. This is the year of that first chemistry class that nearly makes you gray, but whets your appetite just enough for you to come back for a second year of the torture and discovery. You find that English is nothing like the normal words you started crying as a kid: these classes introduce guys with weird names like Socrates, Euripides, and Dionysus. The algebra is harder, and trying to get the computer to do it for you only produces a mile-long game of STAR TREK. But for the first time you can ride the band bus with no shaving cream to make the Friday sophomore initiations complete. The million SAT tests plague you as your eyes cross with the tiny ovals and your number-two soft-lead pencil crumbles as you open your answer sheet. The guy becomes a palatial ballroom for the Junior-Senior, but the traces of lavender paint on your favorite Levi's remind you of the many nights you forgot homework to go paint at the ‘‘secret place”. Sure, all the work is harder. The classes ‘‘challenge ’ you, and all the other things are designed to make you “‘grow’’. You grow tired of selling magazines. You grow to hate the early-morning band practices, and you soon wish that service club would be a little less serviceable. Just as you are ready to hop off the high dive with your cement shoes laced tightly around your feet, a little voice reminds you that your class sold more magazine subscriptions of International Flea to their pet dogs than any previous class, that the halftime shows were better than any visiting band’s could hope to be, and the small white thank-you note for all the service is addressed to your club. Put the cement shoes back in the closet. The little voice speaks even louder as the year rolls on. Human Hammer. 172 Sophomores Final Hope for a Better Future Sophomores — rarely appreciated — definitely abused. From the first day, you were teased, laughed at and made fun of. No one said it would be easy to be a sophomore, but you stuck with it. You took the good with the bad and realized that the rough spots, in the forms of exams and grades, were a little worse than any you had come across before. Decisions had to be made for your life was about to begin. Everything you ever dreamed of suddenly came into sight and now stared you in the face daring you to reach for your goals. Hopefully, Shelby High has become more to you than just a build- ing full of blackboards, desks, and books. Shelby High is much more. It is a spirit made up of many people and organizations waiting to help you reach your goals. As a sophomore, you are seldom appreciated by the juniors and seniors, but you know you have become part of the spirit of Shelby High. Hog the camera! Scott Bonner — Rec. But the annual itself is not just a book: it is an institution backed by years of tradition and history. Most students never consider the back- ground of the SHS Cruiser — more specifically how it came to be called Cruiser. The Cruiser was first published in 1927, with a budget of four hundred dollars. From that time until 1933, there was no official title; in 1931 it was called The Black and Gold. Because of the Great Depressio n of the 30's, no annual was published in 1932, 1934, and 1935. Ads from local businesses, the staple of annual Production, could not be obtained. However, in 1933, because of the generosity of friends of Shelby High, an annual was pub- lished. In this year, a student body vote entitled the annual Cruiser, and the class of '33 asked that this name be made per- manent. Along with the name, an official seal was adopted, depicting a ship and the motto, ‘‘Depart to Serve.’’ This symbol- izes a student's journey through life and the hope that from Shelby High students will depart to enrich the community and the world. Few can know the anxiety involved in producing an annual. But outweighing the anxiety is a sense of responsibility to students past and present — a responsibility to continue in the tradition of high quality annuals begun almost fifty years ago. From a budget of four hundred dollars to twelve thousand dollars — we can come a long way, and we have still farther to go. Raids on the annual workroom by F.T.W., sudden trips to Charlotte, the murder of sleep (and grades), fifteen absences in six weeks, ‘‘this will be reflected on your next six weeks’ grade”. . . all part of the life of Cruiser editors. Yet, would we have had it any other way? For- getting all of the above detriments, the experience of “‘editoring’’ has its moments. A special rapport develops among members of the staff, and friendships are strengthened during the long, frustrating nights of labor. The staff themselves are not the only ones who must suffer through the seven months of annual preparation. Thank you, Mother and Daddy, for housing (in a warm room) the annual staff and provid- ing a place for uninterrupted work; Sarah, Betsy, and Amoeba women — you'll never know how your support and encouragement made this experience bearable. Thank you, Barbara and Lindy, for putting up with my absence; thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Hamrick, for the guidance that unsure editors always need; and thank you, teachers, for sparing your time and your students. Fellow classmates, this is your annual; you make up the yearbook; you are its theme. Our job was to put together what you created — the life and spirit of Shelby High School. The 1979 Cruiser: a part of your life that we give back to you.
