Miss Greene and Mrs. Nesbitt were added to the list of ninth-grade English teachers because of the increasing freshmen enroll- ment. Ninth, tenth, and eleventh-grade English courses offer mainly grammar and litera- ture. However, in senior English classes, f emphasis is placed on composition with re- view of grammar. Courses in public speaking and journalism, added this year, offer advantages to inter- ested students. English students find supplementary material helpful. Parlez-vous francais, mademoiselle? With an additional teacher in the Spanish de- partment plus new first year Spanish books, stu- dents progressed rapidly in the course. Students interested in the classics may take Latin. It is the only language offered to fresh- men because it serves as a background for other languages. For the first time, a course in third- year Latin was developed for Juniors and Seniors. Still a relatively new language at Shelby High is French. Only three years in existence, this course has become more popular with students. Bl , A 2 li 2 T
