Miss Greene and Mrs. Nesbitt were added to the list of ninth-grade English teachers because of the increasing freshmen enroll- ment. Ninth, tenth, and eleventh-grade English courses offer mainly grammar and litera- ture. However, in senior English classes, f emphasis is placed on composition with re- view of grammar. Courses in public speaking and journalism, added this year, offer advantages to inter- ested students. English students find supplementary material helpful. Parlez-vous francais, mademoiselle? With an additional teacher in the Spanish de- partment plus new first year Spanish books, stu- dents progressed rapidly in the course. Students interested in the classics may take Latin. It is the only language offered to fresh- men because it serves as a background for other languages. For the first time, a course in third- year Latin was developed for Juniors and Seniors. Still a relatively new language at Shelby High is French. Only three years in existence, this course has become more popular with students. Bl , A 2 li 2 T Eanguage, science, and mainematicsgfcygurses. 9 0 Along with mathematics, science has be- come more important in our modern age. Around four hundred and sixty students take courses in either physics, senior science, or biology. Several students made science projects, biological or physical, to be exhibited in the Science Fair in Charlotte. The science department is undoubtedly the fastest developing department in our school. The need for better laboratory facilities and better instructive equipment has been shown and corrected. Now like my old friend Pythagoras said . . . And what will the reaction be? With an emphasis on rockets and sputmks courses in mathematics are stressed. General math, Algebra I and II, Plane Geometry, Solid Geometry and College Algebra provide a varied program. For students who enjoy math and want to further their knowledge in math, a math club has been formed. Also a slide rule class is of- fered one night a week for two months with Mr. Jolley as teacher. Higher grades on college entrance exams in math portions are attributed to our excellent pro- gram. 7 Special 5--Eiplls are shown X... Eyes on copy, ready, type? For the budding artists, Shelby High School has a new art department. The instructor, Miss Felts, is directing the thirty juniors and seniors in various types of artistic endeavors. Work in tiles, sketcho, water colors, clay, and plaster have made this new course in- teresting and profitable. KQV 9 in ,elective sulijeefs jf! Freshman and sophomore boys inter- ested in manual arts have an ample op- portunity to further their special skills. A shop with modern machinery, in addi- tion to a qualified teacher, creates both enjoyable and informative class sessions. The projects that the class members pro- duce are very beautiful and useful in their homes. Oops! Missed a stitch. All girls appreciate the helpfulness of the home economics department. First, second, and third year home economics are offered as elective courses. CSewing is taught one semester and foods, the other semester.J Mrs. Gregory joined the department as a first year home economics teacher. Now you're cooking on the front burner' Superior guidance offered to students Books are keys to wisdom's treasures ,il Last year a full guidance program was es- tablished at Shelby High School. Mrs. De- Priest supplies information and application blanks for tests, scholarships, and colleges. She helps the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors select their courses for the following years. Mrs. DePriest is responsible for College Day, Vocational Day, giving Scholastic Apti- tude Tests, and administering the vocational tests to the seniors not planning to attend college. Student Council sends money to f'Care The purpose of the Student Council is to represent the student body as a Whole. The Student Council is an organization of stu- dents who work in co-operation with the faculty for the student body. Its members are students elected by their homerooms and clubs to serve as their representatives in this body. In this way the student body is equally represented. This organization was not formed as a governing council, but rather as a represen- tative body of students who can help the pupils of Shelby High School with their problems. The Student Council also tries to stimulate the students' interest in the school in all its activities and to instill in their hearts a deeper appreciation of what school can mean to them. The Student Council has sponsored several dances and several money-making projects throughout the year. The Council regularly sends representatives to the W.N.C. Conven- tion of Student Councils and the State Con- vention. It also sponsors the American Field Service exchange student in our school. i Z i w ,w 'ff' H l fi'i'Hr:w11'f aware r' ,'1' I,-f-ini lf! Commercial Club provides future Business leaders The purpose of the Commercial Club is to broaden the knowledge and interest of students in different commercial fields, to create a greater interest in business activities, and to foster worth- while social life among the members. Any student of good character, taking two or more commercial subjects, maintaining at least a B in all commercial subjects and a good aver- age in all other subjects is eligible for member- ship. New members are taken into the club at the end of the first six Weeks and after the first semester. Mrs. Webb expounds business op- portunities. 90 The Industrial Arts Club was formed in 1955 soon after the opening of the Industrial Arts Department. The eligibility require- ments were determined by those in industrial arts who were interested in the club. It is designed to provide social fellowship for its members who have been recognized as hav- ing done excellent work in industrial arts. Its aim is to further interest in industrial arts and to promote the main objective of the Industrial Arts Program as it is being pre- sented in the Shelby High School. The ob- jective, then, is to meet the needs of stu- dents preparing to live in a technical, demo- cratic society. The basis for membership is that the stu- dent must show an interest in industrial arts and be in good standing with his fellow stu- dents and members of the faculty. Homecoming festivities Highlight Homecoming at Shelby High School was the highlight of the football season. Floats from homerooms and clubs were entered in the parade of which the National Honor Society had charge. Senior football players and other seniors holding the office of presi- dent in certain clubs were eligible to have a sponsor. During the half-time ceremonies on Octo- ber 16, 1959, the combined bands of Lenoir and Shelby presented a most unusual pro- gram. Also, at this time the sponsors were introduced. After the game the gym was the scene of the big Homecoming Dance. The music, pro- vided by the Nocturnes helped to bring to a conclusion a day long to be remembered by all Shelby High Students.
