GLENN DICKSON As the morning sun slowly climbs over the dew moistened treetops, one suddenly awakens with the joyous feeling that a new adventure is about to begin -- one which will perhaps surpass anything that has gone before. Hurriedly breakfast is eaten, and frantically one dashes off to school, barely arriving before the sounding of the eight-forty bell. Slowly the morning hours drag along. Has the clock stopped? Third period-an eternity -- finally ends. A rush is made for the lunchroom; nevertheless ten precious minutes are lost by standing in line. The clock has surely stopped. How the afternoon hours plod along. At three forty-five with a feeling of relief one rushes homeward. Supper is hastily gulped down, but there are still five minutes to go before the date with that special girl. After a movie a valuable hour is thrown away in careening around the country in Dad's old jalopy. At midnight one finally tumbles into bed and soon is lost in slumber. Only the persistent ticking of the clock on the dresser accompanies the gentle sound of deep and peaceful breathing. But wait! Something is wrong! HTN © 00 To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from em- bracing; A time to get, jand a_.fime to’ lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence and a time to speak; A time to love, anda time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace. The memories of the happiest year of our lives will long be cherished. Joyfully will we remember the best Junior-Senior banquet ever, the trip to Washington, the day we finished Senior English, and the friendships we have made during our years here’. To our officers, who have capably led us this year, we can only say, ''Thank you.'' Your guidance and leadership have meant much to us. Those two girls -- women now -- were still talking: “Why, yes, Mayor Denis King informed me yesterday that I would be in the receiving line. Nearly everybody will be there. The program will begin with an invocation by the historian, Professor Glenn Grayson, of the Glenn Dickson Academy of Learning. As you know, Professor Grayson has some brilliant colleagues in this fine school. One is English Professor Joseph Kennedy, whois making increas- ingly futile attempts to manage his only remaining pupils, Sonya Calhoun, Joan Propst, and Junius Gardner.” Orator Hoke Thompson, master of ceremonies, will then direct the spotlight to the quintet composed of Erma Jean Adams, Clyde Blanton, Dean Garver, Connie Carter, and Larry Moore, who have decided to harmonize with Bill Noblitt’s composition called ‘Because of a Comma.’ The last notes of this hair-pulling song will be a cue for the ‘New Daily Sun's' editor, Delores Blanton, to present Martha Cannon's reviewof ‘English in Three Simple Les- sons’, a reminiscence of a ‘5 1 English class by Ethel Pendleton. Next you will see Elaine Canipe and Derrell Howard add a little rhythm to the program by one of their special Russian dances which they affectionately have named 'The Mass of the Masses' Misses,’ a cross of the polka and the rhumba. A four-thousand foot canoe has been kindly donated by the Mohawk Canoe Manufactur- ing Company, owned and operated by William Canipe and Bob Bridges, This trim craft will be used in bringing our dancers across the ocean to America.” Near the middle of the program will come an impor- tant event -- the recognition of outstanding achievements in these various fields: sports, medicine, art, mechanical abilities, and literature.” Por their ability to coach and lead their respective football teams to ten victories and no losses, for their undying efforts to aid the sport of professional football, and for the fact that every thought was directed to the game, and not to money or personal fame, Graham Phifer, Jimmie Kiser, and Scott Spradley will receive platinum trophies given by platinum tycoon and one- time sportsman, T.G. Daniel, Jr., who recently attained an altitude of 30,000 feetin a slightly old turbo-jet Piper Cub. As you know, this airplane was designed by space engineers Neil Wilson, Billy Falls, and Ronald Hawkins, Mass production of this three-pound craft is the only policy known by the Smith-Ha ynes Space Ship Company, owned by Larry Smith and Larry Haynes. Receiving recognition in the vast field of art will be fashion designers Sylvia Stuart and Hilda Carpenter, who now have some stunning creations of the super-sonic capacity to be modeled by Pat Jarrett and Pat Howe, also two very stunning creations, Jack Hendrick, owner of the Southern Florists of America, has willingly asked if he may furnish corsages for the models, Turing now to digits, you will see an exhibition of flying fingers when Carolyn Thompson and Mary Ann Dover, the world's fastest typists, demonstrate their ability on the world's best typewriting machines. Nearly fifteen years was spent by inventor Rusty McDonald in designing and perfecting this flawless type of machine. “Bleanor Allen, world famous physician, along with her assistant, Nancy McLean, will be present to explain and demonstrate some of her latest medical discoveries. Some of us may be startled at what we will see. The climax of the ceremony will be the presentation of the Pulitizer Prize for literature to Sayde Eskridge and Marjorie Singleton who spent nearly twenty years in writ- ing their latest book entitled, ‘How to Cure Baldness,’ As objects of study they closely observed the heads of radio announcer Colon Goode and railway magnate Bobby Smith. Now, Jeanne, Charlotte continued, “since you have a good idea of the program, are you convinced that it will be an excellent banquet?” Yes, Charlotte, I am convinced, and I'll meet you there at seven o'clock. Well, good-bye.” Bye; Finally, after thirty years of waiting, I find my tele- phone with one noise issuing forth -- the dial tone. Slowly, cautiously, I dial the important number, 8221. Article I Juniors Tothe Juniors we leave the responsibility of publishing the Cruiser , hoping that you will uphold the high standards that have been set by your predecessors. 1. To two industrious persons Billy Noblitt and Keith Hawkins leave the unpaid bill for fifty turtleneck sweaters, appropriately marked with the seal of Shelby High School. 2. To Andy Cockrell, Junius Gardner leaves his ability to get along with the girls. 3. To Kenneth Ledbetter, T. G. Daniel, Jr., leaves his little black book--of football yells? 4. To Mallory McSwain, Graham Phifer leaves his ability to knock three teeth out of an opposing line- man on play 65. 5. To Vicki Plaster, Delores Blanton leaves her ear for gossip. 6. To Dru Weiland, Nancy McLean leaves her Southern accent. 7. To M. G. Brooks, Glenn Grayson leaves his mathematical mind. 8. To Dot Dover,Joan Mauney leaves the fine art of getting the most said in the least possible time. Article II Sophomores and Freshman With the hope that the Sophomores will put on a spectacular Junior-Senior Banquet, we leave them all our blueprints, so carefully guarded in a specially-built vault at Fort Knox. To the Freshmen girls all our cherished volumes on how to lift both legs at the same time are left. This may be helpful when the time comes for them to be Sophomorettes. Now as a parting gesture: 1. To Jack Seecrest, Nancy Hambright leaves her eyebrows. 2. To Alfred Washburn, Wayne Edwards leaves some of his surplus muscles. 3. To Will Rogers, Tumpy Kiser leaves his famous phrase, You'ums git in there and rack ‘em.” Atticle III Faculty To the faculty, without whose help we would not be Seniors, we want to express our gratitude for the help they have given us when our needs were great. The entire day has been taken up in madly dash- ing from place to place -- always ina hurry, al- ways fearful of pausing even for a moment, always afraid of being late. Stop: for :amoment...... Think... Gonsider those priceless moments wasted... Weigh the tine lostPleachnvda yan. But what is time? In one sense it is conceived of as the past, the present, and the future. The past lies in the memory; the future in the imagi- nation; but the present moment is entered by an act of decision. It is occuring now. This, ina psychological sense, is time. It is not an endless cycle. It is real, alive -- personal. For every man there is a destiny, but to say that time has always been or will always be is beyond compre- hension. The Creator alone knows this. Only as the days lengthen into months, the years into decades, will such thoughts begin crossing the threshold of one's mind. Then, and only then, will moments of reflection carry one sadly back to youth's wasted days. At last death is seen, not as a remote event happening only to others, but as an inevitable end to a transient life.
