The final curtain has closed upon the season's last per- formance and, following a regular custom. I join a group of fellow cast members for dinner at a cozy tearoom in Greenwich Village. Wliile I am waiting to be served, my attention is attracted hy a heavily curtained booth in one cor- ner which I learn is the abode of a fortune teller. Soon, answering to the beckon of superstition, I find myself seated across from a turbaned, be-jeweled gypsy. Searching into the depths of her crystal ball, I seek knowledge of my classmates of '-16. The phenomenon begins with a garden club meet- ing in Alaska. The handsome speaker, towering above the fascinated Eskimo ladies, is none other than jack Bowers, the plant specialist. But the scene rapidly changes to the shores of sunny Florida. Bobby Evans and his band of blondes rehearse by the surging sea for their evening perform- ance at Mwerfi Manor. This, Miami's largest hotel, is owned exclusively by Wendell Moser who, at present, spends his time slumped in a deck chair, striving to catch up on the sleep he missed while learning his high school lessons. Coming into view is a majestic mountain at the top of which Dan Harris, renowned scientist, stands beside his moon-bound rocket ship. He is giving last minute instructions to Millie Flash Johnston, lady adventurer, who will be its first occupant. Wfhile in the far south in Brazil, Patty Overton. the famed foreign interpreter, teaches a Spanish prince various languages in her spare moments. Commercial Airlines pilot, George Hornaday, has just completed a non-stop flight around the world in ten hours. Doris McMurry's new Ford V-9 makes 150 in low gear. The vast lllvll lviv-In Menmrial Alblelic Smdilzm was built as a memorial to himself by Henry Mc- Whirter who still lives to enjoy the fortune he made on his invention of a homework preparing machine. A jubilant crowd cheers Roy 'Boots' Kent, the world's greatest baseball pitcher. After the game, when only half the stadium is vacated, two squads of eleven rush to the field and the football season is on. The star of the game is a flashy tailback, Herman Smith. Once again I am taken back to Shelby, now three times its former size. At the city hall, Mayor Dick Wfhisnant issues orders to Alderman john Wfells who in turn gives instructions to his two efficient sec- retaries. Eloise Champion and Doris Hamrick. The girls. however, have other plans and are soon exercis- ing them downtown. First, they stop at Betty Nor- man's jewelry shop, The Di.m1fn1d.' then they progress farther to a delicatessen shop owned by Marjorie Bivinsg from there to Bobby Howe's department store, and Finally to Patsy's. This swanky place, before its present owner Patsy Manous bought it, was the well known Messick's. Among those celebrities making their entrances are Mary Alice Hudson, a fabulous glamour girl, Editor Zeb Weathers of The Shelby Sun, Mary Ann Teele, society editor of that great paper, and Betty Spradley who expertly com- poses the funnies. As this scene fades away a giant skyscraper, twice the height of any ever built, appears within the globe. It has recently been constructed by Hugh Duncan. His old friend, jim Cornwell, is now a famous foot- ball coach and is training the coolies in China in a Football Across the Seas campaign. Frances Thompson has turned her attention from horsemanship to training baby elephants. In London America's Ambassador, Laton Horton, junior, defends jimmy Crowder whose twin terriers mistook a duch- ess' ankle for their bones. I.ost again in the glitter of New York I find that Martha Ann Byers has become a popular vocalist at Billy Mace's Rhinestone Horse Shoe. Tops among the musical hits is Kitty NWray's Fallier in which Kitty is the dancing star. At the Wcirld's Greatest Opera House Sara May Hamrick sings a sad, sad aria and wipes away a tear with her now ankle length blond braids. Headlines carry the story of the clash between jimmy Hamrick, editor of a certain gentlemen's maga- zine, and Hugh Varga Mauney, artist, over the nation's number one pin-up girl, Dorothy McAlister. Miss McAlister is a model for the Pr1u'ev1v and Pumer flludcf Agwzci which is owned by Nelson Posner. Barbara ,larrett and Hazel Olsby, who design and model, now have their own smart shop on Fifth Avenue. Betty ,lo Queen teaches a physical education class at Columbia University where Dick Weav'er is basketball coach. Now the ball grows dimmer and l suddenly realize that the tearoom has long been vacated and only the gypsy and I remain. Pressing a bill into her hand. I step out into the night. Lacy snowfiakes fall from above and I am grateful for the solitude in which I can walk and walk, thinking of my classmates success, and wondering when we'll meet again.
