COY0'l'E Page FIVE In 1912 the School Board James A Johnson lV' Kassel and J H MacFarlane carried out plans for a much better school and a three story brick building was erected in the west part of town now used to house the lower grades It was ln this bulldmg that e first High School was inaugurated and the Prm Cl l was Mr W M Black Wlthm a short time e attendance was too great for this building and e old building in the eastern part of town was usel or the Prlmarv Gr 'les This arrangement was suf ficlent until 1919 when the present up to date High School Bulldlng was erected To the School Board Otto Lvons J B P11 and Dr W T Evans also M P Lyons who came on the Board later lS due great credit for the success 0' the building program They had the efliclent help of Principal Payne Templeton in thls and to h m espec lallv is due much of the success of the first 'ear of school ID the new building The new building ls lo cated across the street from the old one It 1 'x low one story structure made of clav colored bricl' I it is a modern gymnasium audltorlum library and 'adequate room for all the departments of the H1 l' School There is a Commumty Club in town which use the Gymn slum and Auditorium each Tuesdav ven mg durmg the winter season Thus lt is a centei for the activities of the entlre community as well as for the school Smce its organization this school has been verv active ln mter scholastic contests of all kmds This year our Glrls Basket Ball team won the champlonshlp of the Trl County League the Debate Team consisting of L wrence Pike Florence Rldl and Warren Evans have won the championship of North w stern Montana and are still in the contest wvth falr ch nces of winning the state championship The outlook for our track team IS good but the con test IS still in the future at this wrltlng In the Trl County Declamatory contest held at BTOWHIDQ Montana Gl dys Gunter won first place for girls and Warren Evans second place for boys This year has seen some advances along the lme of student activities A Dramatlc Club has been organized which fosters and directs all school plays llterarv programs and such like activities The Cov ote which was first issued ln 1919 has been enlarged nd improved The publishing of the Annual has been a big and trying task but has proved a success largelv through the support of the student body an the r-vhvens of Shelby and vlclnlty Thus from the sm ll and unpromlslng begmmn has grown the school of which we are justly proud Shelbv High Our School E D 25 ta. Page Four f'0Y0'l'F Shelby The Home of Our School Early ln the year 1880 a few whlte settlers ml grated to this northern sectlon of Montana These brave people were always ln danger from the In dlans, but finally succeeded ln startlng ranches ln the land east of the Rocky Mountams The majorlty of these people were stockmen and some of these har dy ploneers secured ranches on the Marlas River About slx years later the Gault Mlhlhg Company made a treaty wlth the Plegan Indlans and sent thelr surveyors out to survey for a rallroad In the year 1890 a narrow gauge road began operatlng between Lethbrldge Canada and Great Falls Montana This passed through what IS now Shelby However thls name was not applled tlll a contractor by that name came out when the Great Northern Company bought the narrow guage lme and bullt the great trans contlnental system from St Paul to Seattle Shelby IS the home of Our School It IS sltuated about one hundred mlles east of the Rocky Mount alns and IS some thlrty mlles south of the Canadlan me When lt received the name Shelby was a mere settlement conslstlng of a sectlon house a store and a few other bulldlngs Thls first store was built in 1880 by C A WhltmlYC from whom lt was purcha ed ln 1894 by H F Guth Gradually the surrolrdln country changed from a stock TZISIUE sectlon to a farmmg' country It was ln 1908 that the last cattle passlng of the old days and the commg of the nu Shelby was lncorporated as a town ln 1910 lvl! James A Johnson belng elected fo fi t 'la r I 1914 Toole County was formed and Shelbv was made the County Seat As a passenger steps off the tlall 'xt Shelbv he may get a falr vlew of the centr 1 pa of the town We wlll see Maln Street whlch runs pa ahel ruth the load tracks and some half squ rc o thl south The County court House a one story r d ljll I- stluc t e fronts Mam Street Two departn ent stores a drug store bakery two grocery stores and hardware stores ale wlthln vlew Looklng northward the vls Our School, Its It has been s ld that Mighty Oaks from Llttle Acorns Grow That IS true of our Shelbv school The first school house ln thls sectlon known as the Sulllvan School was located about nlne mlles south east of the present town of Shelby It was three ye rs later ln 1898 that the newlv electel school ltor will see two modern hotel bulldlngs a bank and office bulldlng and a pleasant resldentlal section Along the r llroad tracks are two large gram eleva tors and the lumber yards If the vlsltor Wlll look up Mam Street to the extreme western part of town he wlll see two large school bulldlngs one housing the lower Grades and the other thc High School He would find the town llghted wlth electrlclty hav mg a good water and sewer system and telephone servlce Recently there has been conslderable work done to lnvestlgate the Oll deposlts ln thls sectlon of Mon tana At the well owned by the Gordon Campbell KCVIU Syndlcate a strlke of hlgh grade oll ln ver profitable quantltles has been made Thls lndlcates a vast d poslt whlch IS expected to make thls sectlon one of the largest fields ln the United States Shel by IS the very center of thls field and IS the Junctlo polnt of two rallroads therefore holdlng a very ad v 'ltageous posltlon ln thls sectlon of Montana There IS also a large lrrlgatlon project under way for thls sectlon whlch seems assured On Sep tember 4th 1919 an order was made ln the Dlstrlc' Court cre tlng an lrrlgatlon dlstrlct embraclng ar nroumat lv two hundred thousand acres of land ln Toole County and proposing to lmpound and use thereon over three hundred thousand acre feet of the waters of the Marlas rlver and ltS trlbutarles The pleted The land owners themselves are behlnd thls movement and lt promlses to be a large factor ln the development of thls reglon Shelby the home of our school IS the county seat and prlnclpal town of Toole County It IS the Junctlon polnt of two rallroads the Great Northern transcon tlnent l and the Burlington whlch runs North and South lt lS the tradlng polnt for a large agrlcultural sectlon and the Oll Clty of Northern Montana lt IS the ccntcr of a 1 rge lrrlgatlon prolect Take all of these polnts lnto conslderatlon and you can readlly ee that Shelbv wlll be a thrlvlng cltv ln the near future M K Sz M A 25 Past and Present board of Shelby planned a school ln town Thls board was composed of Mlke Connelly Pete Hughe and H F Guth They bought a one room bulldlng fl om Dr Clark and ln this elght puplls were enroll ed Wlth MISS MIHUIC Me bach of Choteau as teacre As the town grew another room was added and the Methodist Church was also used for some classes J J Q - . . . . , . - al. . - - . . , . , - . , , . . . . 1 . . . . - Y Y . , .
