COY0'l'E Page FIVE In 1912 the School Board James A Johnson lV' Kassel and J H MacFarlane carried out plans for a much better school and a three story brick building was erected in the west part of town now used to house the lower grades It was ln this bulldmg that e first High School was inaugurated and the Prm Cl l was Mr W M Black Wlthm a short time e attendance was too great for this building and e old building in the eastern part of town was usel or the Prlmarv Gr 'les This arrangement was suf ficlent until 1919 when the present up to date High School Bulldlng was erected To the School Board Otto Lvons J B P11 and Dr W T Evans also M P Lyons who came on the Board later lS due great credit for the success 0' the building program They had the efliclent help of Principal Payne Templeton in thls and to h m espec lallv is due much of the success of the first 'ear of school ID the new building The new building ls lo cated across the street from the old one It 1 'x low one story structure made of clav colored bricl' I it is a modern gymnasium audltorlum library and 'adequate room for all the departments of the H1 l' School There is a Commumty Club in town which use the Gymn slum and Auditorium each Tuesdav ven mg durmg the winter season Thus lt is a centei for the activities of the entlre community as well as for the school Smce its organization this school has been verv active ln mter scholastic contests of all kmds This year our Glrls Basket Ball team won the champlonshlp of the Trl County League the Debate Team consisting of L wrence Pike Florence Rldl and Warren Evans have won the championship of North w stern Montana and are still in the contest wvth falr ch nces of winning the state championship The outlook for our track team IS good but the con test IS still in the future at this wrltlng In the Trl County Declamatory contest held at BTOWHIDQ Montana Gl dys Gunter won first place for girls and Warren Evans second place for boys This year has seen some advances along the lme of student activities A Dramatlc Club has been organized which fosters and directs all school plays llterarv programs and such like activities The Cov ote which was first issued ln 1919 has been enlarged nd improved The publishing of the Annual has been a big and trying task but has proved a success largelv through the support of the student body an the r-vhvens of Shelby and vlclnlty Thus from the sm ll and unpromlslng begmmn has grown the school of which we are justly proud Shelbv High Our School E D 25 ta. One of the courses offer rl this year is Bookkeeping I the Modern Illustrative Text being used. Stenorz- rflphv I and II are using the Gregg system. Cer- tain high standards are maintained both as to so cd and accuracy. Two periods a day five days a week are required and when accompdnied by the course in Typewriting the foul- courses in combination are allowed three units of credit. No credit is allowed for one years work when not taken with typewriting. The Typewriting work is two years and carries t units of credit when completed. However for stu- dents not taking the full commercial course one unit is given for one year, when satisfactorily completed. Commercial Arithmetic for the first semester and Commercial Geography for the second are offered tc Sophomores and carry one half unit of credit each. The department i. equipped and arranged to m -ke convenient the teaching of four years of Home Economics in the High School. One cla s in Home Economics was conducted this year. The course in Foods included problems in preparation composition value 'ind care of foods and the planning and serving, of meals. One sem- ester 10 periods per week elective 1-2 credit.
