PROPHECY Our physrcs class worked all year on an rnventron that portrays the future At last rt was frnrshed, and Nlr Smrth came over to run a test When he turned on the machrne, rt let out vsrth a peculrar sound endrng rn a loud roar Frnally the norse stopped and a serres of prctures appeared on the screen Irrst, the class obseryed a very famrlrar face Charles Young was seated at a prano He was playrng wrth the Xl G N1 Symphony Orchestra, but the musrc was qurte strange for thrs partrcular orchestra They were playrng Frve Foot Two and Charles was play rng a solo Then the prcture turned to the crty of Los Angeles A famrlrar face moved by but couldn't be recognrzed Soon, though, we drscovered our good frrend, Charles Peterson lle was drrvrng a taxr havrng on rts srde the srgn, Charles Rocket Taxr Servrce, and had advanced greatly from hrs frrst rob at the Sheffreld Sweet Shoppe where hrs fees were small but hrs passengers many The story contrnued when Charles stopped at a servrce statron for some gas and met one of hrs old frrends, Drck Bloss A srgn over the statron read, Bloss s Servrce Statron Bloss had somebody workrng for hrm, and rt was none other than Nlrndy, Drck s former employer The machrne produced another loud roar, but after a whrle settled down A mansron appeared rn the background There were four mards, two butlers, three chauffeurs, and frve gardners Now, who could own such a beautrful house? Someone stepped our of a chartreuse Cadrllac Why' It s jean Kasaback' My, she surely drd get up rn the world' The prcture swrtched to what looked lrke a home economrcs room, and the school none other than Shef freld Hrgh A teacher appeared to be rnstructrng puprls on how to make fur coats She was another student from the Class of 1955 Lora McClarn The machrne then took us on a tour of the school, stopprng at the Uymnasrum where the coach was checkrng over the football equrpment Why' It was Donald Davrdson, one of our star athletes at Sheffreld Hrgh They sure had themselves a swell coach Agarn the machrne cou ed and sputtered We drdn t know how much longer rt would stay together It sounded as though all the bolts were gorng to fly One of the physrcs class headed for a parl of water, but by the trme he returned the prcture had cleared showrng a beautrful motron prcture theater Thrs was a specral nrght wrth a stage show and bank nrght combrned The manager came on stage to announce the cash to be 33,000 The vorce sounded very farrulrar and, as the machrne brought the stage closer, we recognrzed the manager, our good frrend janet Edwards, who was once a trcket collector at the Penn Theater, Sheffreld My, how these Sheffreld students are gettrng along' e l, nobody won the money, and rt was trme for the stage show to begrn It was announced by 'Wlrck Mrck Watts had made nnny recordrngs and was conductrng hrs own dance band He was known all over for hrs wonderful talent Boy, he sure sounded great' But what was thrs7 He had changed the beat to an un usual Hawarran chant Then we knew He had a dancer wrth hrm Among the flowers we recognrzed the dancer to be Krrstal Grrffrth Krrstal frrst made her performance for Youth Center dances She was just wonderful' The students never thought that they could make a machrne that would do all of thrs Next we saw a large crty market A srgn at the front drsplayed rn brg letters, Happy jack s Home of Foods ' We saw the manager rn hrs offrce, and we knew hrm to be our good frrend, ack Cashmere He was busrly engaged rn grvrng orders to all hrs employees As we looked toward the meat counter, we heard a rumpus Two ladres were havrng some trouble wrth therr chrldren One of them was Peggy Anderson, now Mrs Bob Bell, and the other oyce Lewrs, HOW MIS. Paul Moore Mrs 'vloore was tryrng to talk to Mrs Bell but her trrplets wouldn t keep strll They kept tryrng to get rnto Vlrs Bell s buggy where her twrns were sleeprng lt seems that they were talkrng about the good trmes they had rn Sheffreld High School A very odd obyect was next pretured by the machrne It looked lrke a transparent egg stuffed wrth wrres All of a sudden a brrght flash occurred Then we saw Prudy Rrtchre holding a flash camera That must have been a flash bulb that went off On the srde of the camera we read, The Darly Planet Star Edrtor Prudy sure has advanced rn her edrtorral work It looked as though she had been takrng prctures of anrmal heads She was at the home of a famous hunter Suddenly a man appeared from the deep, dark Afrrcan yungle lle showed Prudy a supposedly dead python Suddenly the snake struck rnto the arr just then the prcture be- came snowy and the scene changed Let s hope that every thrng turned out all rrght Next we saw the front of a motron prcture studro The srgn read, Warner Brothers The machrne showed the rnsrde of the studro where we saw Babs lleeter posrng for an advertrsement for Devrl Lrpstrck She also had done some posrng for Look and Lrfe magazrnes I-rom underneath the black sheet of the camera ap peared on Nelson who was one of the studro s frnest photographers I bet that was better than takrng prc tures at assembly, huh, on? We recognrzed another ofthe Class of SS rn thrs room It was n s secretary, Marrlyn Howard Trmes surely have changed She was srttrng rn a brg easy charr talkrng rnto a machrne that was ty prng every thrng she sard Wrthout any trouble, the scene changed to a huge hosprtal We saw on one of the doorsa srgn, D Gertrude Burchel, Head Screntrst ' The door opened and fumes of all descrrptron frlled the room When the arr cleared, we saw a frgure rn whrte lt was Gertrude She looked a lrttle puzzled as to whether or not to add a certarn chemrcal to a test tube Wrthout warnrng our machrne suddenly arose rnto the arr and exploded wrth colorful smoke and plenty of norse When the class frnally came from therr hrdrng places, nerther the machrne nor any of rts parts could be found, and only the memory of what they saw and the colored smoke were left 16 1 V g ' ' v ' ' . , . . C ASS HI TORY The Class of 1955 entered Sheffield High in September 1950. After careful thought, we elected the following officers to carry us through our first year in junior High: president, Patricia Martin, vice-president, june Kipp, secretary, janet Wagner, treasurer, Charlotte Pearwn. Our class advisor was Mr. Lang. ln our eighth-grade year we chose the following officers president, Vernon Stoddard, vice-president, Patricia Martin, treasurer, Donald Davidsong secretary, Prudy Ritchie. Our class advisor was Mr. Chamberlain. Vernon Stoddard and Patricia Martin were chosen by the class to receive the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary honors. During our freshman year our class officers were as follows: president, Prudy Ritchie, vice-prsident, Mickey Watts, secretary, Sonja Weller, treasurer, john Cashmere. In that year some of us went out for choir, band, basketball and foot- ball. We finally entered senior high in the fall of 1952. The class officers that led us through the year were: president, Prudy Ritchie, vice-president, Mickey Watts, secretary, Betty Campbell, treasurer, jack Cashmere. We sold magazines that year to start funds for our junior-senior prom. jean Kasaback and Don Davidson led in magazine sales and received prizes.
