Forty talented students, with their director Mr. Wright, worked very hard to make the organiza- tion one of the best in a long time. The marchers were led by Carol Andrews who did a really superb job. With Carol, the eight other majorettes, in snappy step and uniform, completed the picture. White pillbox hats were added to the maiorette outfits. The band continued their fine work of the football season in our assemblies, adding immeasurably to the spirit of the school. One of the highlights of the fall season was the homecoming dance sponsored by this unit. The gym was beautifully decorated, and a gala evening was enjoyed by all. VARIETY SHOW The choir scored an exceptional triumph in its annual Variety Show in February. It was perhaps the out- standing performance of the choir in many years. Consequently, invitations were extended for the show to appear at Ludlow, Tionesta, and Warren where the great local success was duplicated. The program in Sheffield was so well attended that it was held over for an extra night. Mr. Wright deserves a lot of credit for these outstanding musical entertainments. For the first time the school submitted names to the District Chorus. Five people were accepted. These students went to Albion for three days as part of a chorus of 208 voices. Don Craig, well known director from New York, was the guest conductor. The students who made the trip were: Elizabeth Anne Borden, Linda Boardman, Larry Boardnnn, jack Cashmere, and Dick Bloss. These people had a wonderful time, and from all reports felt the trip was very worthwhile in every way. Out of the 208 in the District Chorus, 17 were chosen to sing in the State Chorus at Minersville. Only one person from a town can be selected for this privilege. Our school was honored by having Linda Boardman selected to attend. She was accompanied by Mr. Wright and three other girls and their directors from Warren, Tidioute, and Sugar Grove, March 17, 18, and 19. Originating this year was the opportunity for students to participate in District Band. Sheffield was represented by jim Vile, Nancy Andrews, and Lucille Dunn. It is hoped that one or more of these people may be eligible for State Band. 42 . fi lvl! CHOIR Last spring the choir made the trip to Clarion State Teachers College for District Forensics, returning home with seven first places out of twelve. This was indeed a good showing for our school. Later the choir made the never-to-be-forgotten trip to Williamsport where again Sheffield made an excellent showing in state competition. The choir received the rating of excellent, the best rating ever awarded the school in chorus competition. The individual ratings received were: three excellents, one good, and two fairs. The three excellents were received by jim Vile, Uumpetg Nancy Andrews, saxophone, and the vocal trio com- prised of Kay Daniels, Linda Boardman, and Eliuibeth Anne Borden. Competing in these contests were over 4,000 students from 118 schools. There were 22 bands, 32 instrumental groups, 44 vocal groups, 110 in- strumental solos, and 64 vocal solos. The choir purchased new robes this year. To this end several money-making campaigns were started. Additional money from the variety show made it possi- ble to complete the purchase. The robes are real smart, being black, with high necks and gold stoles. Sheffield High can surely be proud of the music department and its accomplishments. 43 jack Cashmere Master of Variety Ceremonies , x Q , n :W ,, I .E - 1 ,,.vL'I .,. We can really be proud of our own talent. Professionals from the Antrim Bureau also staged several programs, the first being an educational film lecture concerning Australia, presented by Ralph Wilson Reid. Mr. Reid thrilled the student body with his exhibition of boomerang throwing. Another bright, fall morning we were introduced to the second professional entertainer, George johnson, piano-humorist. During October we were shown a movie, entitled Life of a Forest Ranger, exhibited by the Forestry Department. We were also visited by state police representatives who gave the Green Pennant, symbol of accident-free driving, to Mr. Eisenhauer. During the month of December an Antrim artist, Doris E. Mason, presented us with a most interesting lecture and demonstration of the art of pottery making. Later in December, we were put in the Christmas mood with a movie from the Bell Telephone Conpmy, entitled The Spirit of Christmas. The assemblyg immediately after Christmas vacation, was high-lighted by iArt jenning, a clown, better known as Happy Dayze. Happy produced a brilliant, skillful and very inspiring program. Other outside talent to be with us were: William P. MacLean, with an educational film lecture, African Safarig' the Bonelli Family, America's Most Tuneful Family, in an outstanding marimba pro- gram. Their oldest son, Michael, is the world's fastest juvenile marimbist. joe Bonelli, Michael's father, is an internationally known comedian and dancer. The cheerleaders must be commended for the fine job they did at assemblies. They gave us pep for every game Then, of course, we cannot forget our high school band that put us in the proper mood for nearly every auditorium affair And so, we come to an end of this brief sketch of the past year, hoping that a few of these events will remain rn vour thoughts to bring you back occasionally to the halls of S.
