ffleld Gr Many of 1940 Sheffield High School graduates are expected to be on hand for the homecom mg coffee at the school cafeteria tonight from 6 until 7 o clock Sleuths have used every method to track down the pupils who departed 25 years ago and have brought to light many in teresting facts The sparkhng crystal ball brought forth a clear light on the lives of many but clouds of mist surrounded 1 few of the graduates Here are facts revealed about the class to be honored tonight Tommy Johnson is with Mc Graw Hill Publishing Co New York City and his position in cludes teaching courses on How to Write Better Business Let ters He is now completmg a book on that subJect which will be published soon Beverly Kirkland IS in Texas and Regina Israel lives m Bev erly Hills Calif John L Mitch ell is an architect in Nashville Tenn Dale Peters is with a railroad company in Memphis Lillie Jo Pickens Watson lives in Nashville Fern McCleskey is Mrs Austin Rogers of Montgom ery Bill McIntyre hves Birrmngham where he is with Drennen Motor Co Toy Louise McGehee lives in Columbus Ga and J W Adams is a resident of Phoenix Ariz Frances Shea is Mrs Abner Horton of Birmingham Lila Lee Cordell lives in California W S Stover is a resident of Ohio Charlie Montana is in Edwardsville Ill and C W Pennington operates a private airline furmshmg chartered planes from Memphis Delores Powers has served in several countries with the State Department and is now living in London' Mary Wallace Archer is Mrs. John Minor Lile of Cleveland Tenn: Christine Elledge Gaisser is connected with the Florence Clinic and Hazel Carter is a resident of Florence. Mr. and Mrs. Lee Frey tFrances Gargisl will be pres- ent for tonight s festivities. Lee was one of Sheffields greats on the football field. It is recall- ed that he once made a 96-yard rim for a touchdown and the most touchdowns he made in any single game was five. Son' Tommy Frey a Sheffield sen- ior is playing his third year un- der Coach Walton Wright. So itsffurther recalled that Lee who was captain of the 1939 team also played three years under Coach Wright after play- ing under Coach Brewster. Martha Blake is Mrs. Lewis Timberlake. tMr. Timberlake is mayor of Sheffieldj. John Edward Foerg is a supervisor at Reynolds and Harry Frey! ' Around Worl 1S with Sears Roebuck Co Nell Berry IS Mrs James Blank enship Sheffield Cecil Whitlock is an industrial engineer at Ford C Katherine Wann is n Georgia Horace Wann is con nected with TVA and helps at the press box during each home football game Dale Thornton Sheffield is an instructor with Dale Carne gie for the North Alabama area and manager of the mens de- partment at 011m s He is very active ln various civic progiects and last year was president of the Junior high PTA Jack Hud dleston is an attorney here and Charles Hodges 15 connected with Robbins Floor Products Connected with TVA are Wayne Slayton S B Wright Edward Wix and Lester Elledge Elsie Jarrett now Mrs Mc Dowell of Houston Tex is a secretary with Humble O11 Co and her twin sister Mildred of Memphis is a secretary with Pillsbury Mills Julian Greer Birmingham is an optometrist Wilbur McDaniel is Mrs E V Evans of Colbert Heights Her son Vance Evans is a star tackle for the University of Georgia where he is a Junior Brownie McCormack is Mrs Sam Streater of Sheffield Margaret McClain is connected with a local radio station Katherine Maddox is Mrs Harold Owen whose son is a member of the Sheffield foot ball squad and Myrtle Lee Metzger lMrs Washj is service representative at the Sheffield office of Southern Bell Tele phone Co Eugene Mllstead IS also connected with Southern Bell. Elizabeth Holloway a super- visor for Southern Bell Tele- phone Co. in Florence is Mrs. James H. Carringer. Her son a former Coffee football player now plays for Florence State. Linnie Bell Holsombeck ' Mrs. K. R. Cronin of Randoul Ill. Her husband a major in the Air Force is expected to resign soon after which they will re- tum to this area. Jennings Corter is with the ag- ricultural department' at Al- buquerque N.M. Prior to ac- cepting a position in that area he -taught school in the Hawaiian Islands. TUESDAY AFTERNOON OCTOBER l3 1 Class Ol l94O Will Be Honored At Sheffield Homecoming Friday A burning school a new white building Green Stockings all ma bring memories to the seniors of 1940 This year Y Sheffield High School salutes the 40 graduates at the annual Homecoming These seniors were the first to graduate from the presentl high school which was the, most modern and complete in all North Alabama With the help of Mrs Martha Timberlake and Cecil Whitlock we shall take you on a Journey back to the year 1940 According to Mrs Timberlake the class was a well organized orderly one even in the face of disaster The fire which destroy ed the old Junior and high school on Atlanta Ave was calmly evacuated and school was con tinued until the present high school was completed There were 61 seniors and 12 teachers Ray Black was prm cipal 'I'he most memorable teachers were Coach Walton Wright and Miss Mary Lou Sherrod who passed on last year. The annual was entitled The Hi-Lights Review and dedicated to Mr. Brewster. -The annual prophecies mcluded Lee Frey coaching at a southern univer- sity Martha Timberlake lvoted most beautiful girll as a Holly- wood movie star and Dale Thornton as an owner of a chain of wholesale ready-to- wear stores in the US. Mr. Thornton incidentally started working at Olims in D. 0. Wayne Slayton was voted most mischievous boy and Charles Hodges as wittiest The flI'St senior play present- ed at the new high school was Green Stockings , taking its name from an old English cus- tom requiring an elder sister to wear green stockings to the wed- ding of a young sister if the younger catches the man first. The motto was, 'With .ropes of the past, we ring bells of the futureff Senior class .officers were President S. . B. Wright, Vice-president Frances Frey, Treasurer Brownie McCormack The young ladies were all swoonlng over Lee Frey star football player and captain and Coach Walton Wright The IBulldogs had a good year win ning seven and only being beaten by Coffee 12-7 and Hartselle 13-0' The band was new with ,Hollins Abroms bandmaster drum major Marjorie Bowden and Lieutenant drum major! 'Ramon Vernon SHS also had a concert orchestra which con fined its work only to classics Brownie McCormack a n d Charles Sunshine Hodges were cheerleaders We hope that weve stirred your interests and aroused your memories.
