By demonstrating written dates, Mrs. ETHEYL SERIE teaches her second grade pupils the correct form for writing dates. She enjoys working with primary children because they are eager to learn and try hard to do what is right. As the days pass, you see them grow mentally and physically throughout the school year. Mrs. Serie has attended Normal schools in De Kalb and Normal, Bradley Uni- versity, and LaSalle-Peru Junior College. She has also taken additional work from the University of Missouri and Western Illinois University and is now working toward her degree at Pestolozzi Froebel--a kindergarten and primary training school in Chicago. Mrs. ANNA SOWERS, first grade teacher, emphasizes phonics, words and phrases, addi- tion and subtraction, and flash cards in every- day class periods. Mrs. Sowers says drill is important overall learning. She enjoys the first grade class because she feels this class is a group of six-year olds none of which look, act, think, behave, talk, or grow in the same way. Mrs. Sowers is a graduate of Northem Illinois University of De Kalb, Illinois. She has done student teaching at McMurray Laboratory School. Our custodian, HAROLD VAN DREW, is an integral part of S.H.S. He is always busy with his many chores that range from firing the furnace to preparing the gym floor for a dance. Knowing there is a compe- tent person to help out when- ever he is needed is a great help to students and teachers alike. Our heart-felt thanks go to Harold for a job well done. The Bus Drivers are also an integral part of our school system. Without their services, our transpor- tation system would not be possible.
