With their patience, help, and understanding, we have succeeded in our first great step in attaining an education. il .Et--I Robert Rogers, Kenneth Nelson, Mrs. Betty Ann Madsen, Secretary, Kenneth Streicher, President, Mrs. Rachel Folk, George Smith, Robert Boyden. ur Administration in Action Mr. W. M. Harlan Checking through the moming mail, Mr. Harlan glances up from his desk. Every day is a busy day for this administrator, who is often needed in two places at the same time. Nevertheless, Mr. Harlan is always ready to assist students or faculty with problems that are en- countered from day to day. In the 1957-'58 School year, Mr. Harlan, who has his Master's Degree from the University of Illinois, serves his sixteenth year as ad- ministrator of the Sheffield School System. Edith Donovan- Secretary Edie pauses at her typewriter just long enough for her picture to be taken. Then there are tests to dupli cate for several teachers, reports to type, and admit slips and excuses that must be written out. Always being interrupted with the requests of students, she answers with a cheerful reply. Everyone agrees that Edie always does her part to keep our school hllming at top efficiency. Mrs. FLORENCE JOHNSON, music instructor, often sits at the piano to accompany her music class or to il- lustrate a point. In addition to vocal music in the high school and grades, she also teaches freshman and sopho- more English. She enjoys working with different age levels and likes the variety the two subjects offer. She graduated from the Columbia School of Music, Chicago, and the Indiana University. She has also studied piano and voice at the Louisville Conservatory and Bradley University. Mrs. IRENE KIZER explains in her Shorthand II Class the usefulness of reference books to every secretary. She emphasizes that a good secretary must know where to find those things she is in doubt about. Some important refer- ences are the dictionary, stenographer's manual, and the World Almanac. Mrs. Kizer also teaches Typing I, Typing II, and Bookkeeping. She finds it a pleasure to have a part in helping young people develop for either a vocation or further education. Mrs. Kizer has her degree in education from the Southwest Missouri State Colle e with additional trainin at the Univer 8 8 ' sity of Missouri and Southern Illinois University. Seated at his desk, Mr. JOE SALISBURY jots down possible questions for a Biology exam. I-Ie also teaches Democracy, Physics, and General Science. He is head football coach and assistant basketball coach. I-Ie finds his subjects are interesting .and chal- lenging enough that he never ceases to learn. Mr. Salisbury has his Bachelor of Science de- gree from Illinois State Normal University. Shown here, Mrs. FRANCES KLEINHANS, English teacher and Li- brarian, is selecting new books for the library. In addition to her duties as junior and senior English teacher and seventh and eighth grade Language instructor, she directs the junior, senior, and one -act plays. Mrs. Kleinhans enjoys working with young people and re- ceives a great satisfaction from her teaching. Upon joining our teaching staff this year she came with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin and a Master's degree from the Northem Illinois University. 4 ere Mrs. LAURA PETERSON, Home Economics Instructor, dem- ates a special method in sewing. She enjoys teaching girls sure of acquiring skills and interests in homemaking. In to her home economics classes she has seventh and eighth glish classes. She finds these grades very interesting and participate in various class activities. Mrs. Peterson had a r of Science degree from the University of Illinois and has additional training there as well as at the Illinois Institute of ology. .VMMMMWMMWWWMMMWMM i During study periods Mr. DONALD FOS- TER, band instructor, gives small group les- sons to junior high students. He teaches in- strumental music in the grade school and has a junior high band and three high school bands Qfootball, pep, and concert bandj. Mr. Foster feels music is something that can be enjoyed by persons of any age and by those listening as well as by those who play. He has his Master's degree from De Paul Uni- versity. Pictured here, Mr. HARRY LEHNING instructs the eighth grade, one of his math classes. He also teaches seventh grade Math, Algebra, Plane Geometry, Advanced Math, and Physical Education. Mr. Lehning enjoys teaching, which has been his life- time goal. He has his Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Western Illinois University. Correcting drafting plates are one of the many duties Mr. ROGER ANDREWS has as the Industrial Arts teacher. He teaches the boys correct use and methods of mechani- cal drawing. Mr. Andrews is also head basketball coach and assistant football coach. He enjoys teaching Industrial Arts because it is something that has a great carry-over value in later life. Also, the boys are interested and want to learn. Mr. Andrews graduated from Ball State Teachers College and received his Master's degree from Ball State in Indiana. 5 Sitting at her desk, Mrs. CAROL TONDI drills her Spanish II Class on vocabulary verbal conjugations or possibly dis- trusses the distinction between the subjective and indicative moods. Mrs. Tondi also has a Spanish I Class and a Social Science Class. She particularly enjoys teaching these sub- jects and hopes to provide students with useful knowledge and at the same time make the classes enjoyable for the students. Her preparatory education was obtained from the La Salle- Peru Oglesby Junior College and she completed her college work at the University of Illinois, where she received her Bachelor's degree. Mrs. DORIS FOUTES, Physical Education teacher, is pic- tured here getting equipment ready for her next gym class. In addition to her Physical Education Classes she works with the cheerleaders, plans pep assembly programs, and is spon- sor for GAA. She particularly enjoys her classes because it involves working with a variety of ages. There is some- thing new and different each day in this wide-age range. Mrs. Foutes has a Bachelor of Science degree from Fort Hays State, Hays, Kansas. ,g 55 '. Mr. JAMES FECI-INER reads a discussion on The Air About Us and Our Relation To It in his seventh grade General Science Class. In this particular class he has three days of discussion and two days of laboratory work each week. Mr. Fechner also teaches American History, freshman Social Science, and eighth grade General Science. Mr. Fechner's major field of study was in Physical Education and his minor in History and Social Studies and he enjoys them all very much. Mr. Fechner graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University. I I I Miss SALLEE ELMORE is shown here checking the attendance roll of one of her several classes at Sheffield. Miss Elmore teaches Social Science 7, Social Science 8, Spanish I, Spanish II, and World History. She says she has a special love for both History and Spanish and likes to be able to help students to learn. Before joining the Sheffield teaching staff the second semester to replace Mrs. Tondi, Miss Elmore spent three and one-half years at the University of Illinois. 6 Mrs. DOROTHY HUBER, sixth grade teacher, stresses individual help in arithme- tic as a daily necessity with most students. She feels her group is a very interesting age in the growing-up period and that they offer a constant challenge. Mrs. Huber received her training at Illinois State Normal Uni- versity. Mrs. EVELYN JOHNSON, fourth grade teacher, pauses for a few minutes to see that everyone of her pupils is busy at work. She particularly enjoys working with this age group of children for each one is al- ways a little different from any other. In fourth grade, Mrs. Johnson emphasizes multiplication tables and social studies. She also stresses good sportsmanship and fair play with one's fellowmen. She feels this is something that should be leamed long before they become men and women, if they are to become successful in life. She attended the Northern Illinois State University at De Kalb. Miss OVA ANDERSEN helps her fifth grade pupils with class reports for language, teaching them the cor- rect use of their reference books in finding material for reports. She refers to her fifth as the golden age of childhood. Miss Andersen has her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Illinois and has taken short courses at the National College of Education in Chicago, Normal, and Bradley. kv-4 Miss MABEL PETERSON finds that most third grade children are independent in reading and are beginning to explore the world of books. The are beginning to criticize and evaluate what ily read. Pictured here she demonstrates equatiolll, expressions in number symbols of problems Chl! are presented in the textbook. Clear thinking and reasoning are emphasized in arithmetic. Miss Peterson has attended Augustana College and also taken courses from Illinois State Normal Univer- sity and Macomb. By demonstrating written dates, Mrs. ETHEYL SERIE teaches her second grade pupils the correct form for writing dates. She enjoys working with primary children because they are eager to learn and try hard to do what is right. As the days pass, you see them grow mentally and physically throughout the school year. Mrs. Serie has attended Normal schools in De Kalb and Normal, Bradley Uni- versity, and LaSalle-Peru Junior College. She has also taken additional work from the University of Missouri and Western Illinois University and is now working toward her degree at Pestolozzi Froebel--a kindergarten and primary training school in Chicago. Mrs. ANNA SOWERS, first grade teacher, emphasizes phonics, words and phrases, addi- tion and subtraction, and flash cards in every- day class periods. Mrs. Sowers says drill is important overall learning. She enjoys the first grade class because she feels this class is a group of six-year olds none of which look, act, think, behave, talk, or grow in the same way. Mrs. Sowers is a graduate of Northem Illinois University of De Kalb, Illinois. She has done student teaching at McMurray Laboratory School. Our custodian, HAROLD VAN DREW, is an integral part of S.H.S. He is always busy with his many chores that range from firing the furnace to preparing the gym floor for a dance. Knowing there is a compe- tent person to help out when- ever he is needed is a great help to students and teachers alike. Our heart-felt thanks go to Harold for a job well done. The Bus Drivers are also an integral part of our school system. Without their services, our transpor- tation system would not be possible. Our sincere ap- preciation goes to the Bus Drivers for a fine job. Sipes 17 The green freshmen awaited the dreaded day, September 5, with increasing anticipationg but when the day finally arrived, they found it wasn't so bad after all. As usual, everyone met at school at 7:45 to get made up. Then as the third bell rang for school, the freshmen were paraded through the study hall for everyone to see. At noon the freshmen paid the customary honor of pulling or pushing the seniors downtown in wagons. As the day wore on, the make -up became fainter and fainter. Was it the weather or a little coaxing from the eager freshmen? Every freshman showed exceptional willingness as he bravely weathered the seniors' requests during the day and the formal initiation in the evening. One of which was this little saying: We freshmen, exiles from the greasy, grimy Pits of Halto's inferno, bow down with the greatest respect for your position as seniors. Night of Hawaiian Paradise The Juniors of Sheffield High honored the Seniors at the yearly Junior-Senior Prom on Saturday, May l7, at the Coal Creek Country Club. The theme, Ha- waiian Paradise, was beautifully car- ried out with accents of blue and white, soft music, and candlelight. A wispy blue false ceiling of cheese cloth cast a blue glow over the dance floor. Palm trees bordered a tropical pool filled with tulips, carnations, and lily pads. To add to the theme the Sophomore girls wore sarongs and flowers in their hair to serve the banquet. The tables were also decorated in blue and white with spring flowers and pineapple centerpieces. f 'S pi. i av s i 1 1 2 t . I. , xr e ,S .
