' . . , . : . - . . 7 . i - . - ' Our Junior year we elected the following officers: President-Jim Van Loo, Vice-President- ro he-Cy A good t1me was had by all at a reunlon held by the class of 1954 recently at Cypress Gardens Flor1da The classmates and the1r famlhes were flown to the gardens 1n a luxur1ouS Capltal Alr Lmes DC 6 Connectlons were made by the former Al1ce Lempke who was at one tlme an a1r lme hostess and recently marrled a company executwe The class was very apprecxatlve for her trouble rn makmg posslble the 1974 reun1on Among those attendmg were Verlexgh Moore and her husband Dynamlte and thelr two ch1ldren Mar1an and Stanley They were marr1ed after the close of her career Ln the Van Loo L1ncoln Mercury Corporatmn J1l 1 l bu1lt hls busmess from the bottom after graduatmg from the U of I Some examples of h1s fme work are the jet propelled Lmcoln and the atomlc powered Mercury Mrs Marvm Frank the former Cheryl Jones prepared the food for the banqet Even before she and Marvm were marr1ed they wanted a b1g farznly because of her cooklng ab1l1ty Cheryl and Marvm brought thelr s1x well fed ch1ldren wlth them They enjoyed the gardens tremendously It was qulte a change from the slx hundred acre farm where they raxse whxte horses and run a r1d1ng academy The former Marle Glltner now Mrs Wendell Sm1th enJoyed belng w1th her old class mates agam Th1s was the f1rst tzme m many years Mane was able to attend a class reunlon because she has been kept so busy ra1s1ng her famlly and keep1ng up wlth all the socxal events of belng the w1.fe of a pr1nc1pal of New York .Tunmr Hlgh The former Kaye Cogger had a very long plane rxde as she and her husband came from Los Angeles Cal1forn1a where she owns and operates the Los Angeles Klndergarten Kaye enjoys her work very much as th1s has always been her ambltxon MI Ronald Moore and h1S w1.fe also had a long rxde from L A There he 1s employed as Chlef englneer at Douglas A1rcraft Corporatlon After graduatmg from the U of I he went to Cahfornla to make a name for h1mself ln the englneermg fleld and has been very successful Ronald wanted to have the reunlon at hrs spac1ous Hollywood home but the 1dea was rejected because of the locat1on Adm1ral Larry Pease and hts wxfe Amta reached the gardens 111 thexr yacht wxth flymg colors They spend rnost of t.he1r t1me cru1s1ng around the Medlberranean Sea but they dec1ded to take some t1me off and jo1n thelr classmates for the twenty year reunxon Larry Jomed the navy 1n 1960 after g1v1ng up a career 1n the rendermg busmess It took a lot of plannmg for the former Jo Ann Van De Keere to get to the reun1on because of her many dut1es as head nurse at St Francxs Hospltal Peorla and as a mother and house vufe She and her husband were marr1ed after she graduated from nurse s trammg They l1ve m the new res1dent1al d1str1ct south of Peor1a Knute Hew1tt the Presldent of Farmers State Bank at Sheff1eld and Snapper Klatt arrwed together a l1ttle late but st1ll 111 tlme for the fun Snapper set up h1s Loan Assoclatlon U1 Sheff1eld soon after he had saved enough money from work1ng at Kraft to start the bus mess He and Knute are thmkmg of golng lnto partnershlp to promote better busmess 1nBureau County They are both happ1ly marrled and are ralsmg fme famllles They too graduated from the Unwerslty of Ill1no1s Th1S Page Sponsored By O B GILTNER M D HCM BERFIELD M D Sheffield 9 . . - I . . 1 1 1 Q 1 1 1 . . . - Q ' I I . - - . . . 1 n 1 . . 1 V 0 1 . A o - . , . . . . , . ., The former Joyce Speakman took a few hours off from her var1ous dut1es as recept1on1st at Un1ted Au- Lmes headquarters at Ch1cago to attend the reun1on She IS marr1ed to a p1lot and they make the1r home 1n Oak Park 1n a mans Lon whxch has been 1n her husband s fam1ly for years They had a grand t1me at Cypress Gardens and are lookmg forward to the next t1me the class can get together The former Mar1lyn Frank also attended w1th her husband and f1ve ch1ldren She met her husband when attendmg the Molme Instxtute of Commerce They now l1ve Ln the Tr1 C1t16S and occasxonally get to V1S1t fr1ends and relatwes 1n her old home town Leon and Mrs Fox and all ten l1ttle Foxes were also present at the reunlon Leon started h1s own busmess as a Petrogas Stat1on manager soon after graduatmg from old S H S Dave W1lcoxson arr1ved sllghtly late but he made It 1n t1me for the banquet It seemed that h1s w1fe couldn t make the reun1on because twms were expected to arrwe at any t1me Dav1d has been successful 1n h1s career 1n the army Smce he has been made a General he hasn t been able to get back to h1s old home town very often Mr and Mrs Edward Van Me 1r flew to the gardens from Spflngfleld Ed got 1nto P011t1CS soon after graduatlon when he went to work for the Farm Bureau Later they sponsored h1m as a representatwe and he has held a seat 1n the House ever smce .Tack Gentry had a fme t1me at the reumon V1S1t11'lg w1th old classmates and buy1ng them l1ttle g1fts that he thought they would l1ke H1s outlook on lxfe IS havlng fun spend1ng h1s second m1ll1on Everybody has heard of h1s KIDDIE CAR COMPANY wh1ch he buxlt up from pract1cally nothmg Walt Hasbrook attended the reun1on 1n f1ne style w1th h1s fam1ly whlch IS now res1d1ng at the1r spaclous l 000 acre farm whlch 1S located north of Sheff1eld Because h1s w1fe was afra1d of planes they arr1ved 1n the 1r 1974 sky blue p1nk and buckle brown Lmcoln Bud Morrasy and h1s famzly arr1ved from the grow 1ng Clty of Sheff1eld where he IS now the owner of the Super Duper Market He and h1s farn1ly have just completed bu1ldmg the xr new all p1aSt1C house HIS two g1rls and boy enjoyed the atmosphere of the gardens and hope to aga1n meet the ch1ldren of the1r fathers classmates Tuss Nutter and h1S w1fe Kay, came to the gardens 1n the1r own pr1vate plane Terry bought out the General Motors Company and IS now turnlng out the world s most famous automob1le He 1s now U1 the process of turnmg out the Hydrogen Automob1le wh1ch w11l revolut1on1ze the 1ndustry Dorcas and Duane Moore and the1r s1x boys attended the reumon Due to her early rnarr1age, shortly after graduatmg from h1gh school she has been able to rear a large famxly of whlch they are very proud Don Hasbrook had the good fortune to marry a cattle buyer s daughter and 15 now ope rat mg a 5 000 acre ranch 1n western Colorado He 1S now trymg to lease an add1t1onal 10 000 acres on wh1ch he plans to ra1se purebred Herefords Th1s Page Sponsored By LEONARD HANSEN, Bulldozmg 81 Dredgmg, Contractxng, Sheff1e1d . 1 4 u f 1 ' I ' 4 0 . K 7. -f K , if a fr ' at-'sn jo Freshman Class The Freshman Class received one new member Carol Drew and lost one Wayne Olson Wayne moved to Atkinson at the begrnnlng of the second semester The f1rst semester party was skatmg at the Prmceton Roller Rink The second semester party was ICC skating and a party at the school afterwards The Freshmen also sponsored the Homecommg Dance The officers are as follows Pres1dent Helen Hew1tt V1ce President Anna McCarty Secretary Carol Drews Treasurer Marcia Vermuellen Co Sponsors r Host 81 Mr Ballotti Inltlatlon September llth was an excitmg day for the wardens Seniors when several of the convlcts Freshmen were on the loose Th1s was the day of the 1n1t1at1on The convicts were dressed 1n all kinds of clothes A few examples are nightgowns hip boots pumps sandals mner tubes mlxed var1at1ons of t1es long underwear and a number The new teachers Mr White and Mr Johnson were very co operatwe in dressing up and joining in the initiation Somehow Seniors kept meeting the Freshmen um the halls The Freshmen got on their knees and very humbly recited Oh honorable Senior we adore you We Freshmen are the lowest form of an1mal l1fe In the even1ng the school stage was turned into a prison and it seemed as though this particular mght the convicts were on good behavior and were staging a talent show Jack Gentry as chief warden presented the acts and each convict had a special escort The flrst talent on the show were the inmates Cynthia Ray and Gary Lyle who were helped on stage by wardens Cheryl Jones Marie Giltner and Joyce Speakman It seemed the prison was being reconstructed so they had to measure the length of the floor with an mch string They had to keep domg this until they came out with the same number Unfortunately their answers were never the same So naturally Cynthia was very trred so Gary sang her to sleep and gave her a bottle Our next talent was from Sheffield Alaska Her name was Ruth Ann De Bolt On the way down she kept selecting people as her dogs for her dog sled and yelling mush mush , at them So that night she selected some Freshmen for her dogs and made them pull her around the gym in a wagon while ye llmg mush mush at them Alice Lempke was the warden in charge Wayne Olson and Janet Riggs were fortunate enough to appear on the program Marllyn Frank and Verleigh Cunningham were m charge of these prisoners It seemed as though Janet was trying to get served ln Joe and Knute s and that is where we picked her up and Wayne well he was trymg to sw1pe men s girdles They were always smging m the halls very loud so that mght we thought we would let them smg with ice 1n the ir mouth so as to freeze the tone Thls Page Sponsored By - ------- M . . ' ' . . c L . of other creations, Their hair was braided and done up in strings, - VAN PACKER COR PORATION, Buda LAKE PRESS,All Kinds of Printing Done, De Pue Anna Sprowls was in charge of the next convict Stanley McCarty He was picked up on the charge of kidnapping girls He showed the audience how he lured the girls on The next two contestants were Martians none other than Helen Hewitt and Marcia Vermeulen Kaye Cogger and Jo Ann Van De Keere were in charge of them These convicts were found sitting on top of the Empire State Building throwing pies down on people in the street They were ready to leave the prison but before they went they had to retrieve the key of the prison with the ir hands tied behind them Jo Ann Cogger was the next talent and she was introduced by Larry Pease Jo Ann is the seamstress of the prison and that night she showed the audience how to embroider wearing boxing gloves The next inmates were Maury Redman and Carol Drews Carol ran a stop sign with her bicycle and Maury got caught trying to poison coach Johnson s sundae They showed the audience how to eat baby food blindfolded Walter Hasbrook Dorcas Gibson and David Wilcoxson were the guards Bob Klatt was in charge of Anna McCarty She was caught out in the grove catching gophers for a new winter coat Anna imitated her famous calls which she used to capture the gophers Nancy Van De Velde was the next talent Nancy was ready to leave the prison and it seemed as though she contacted some lice so her inmate Barbara Clay gave her an egg shampoo Terry Nutter and Eddie Van Meir were in charge The Janitor of the prison was fortunate enough to appear on the program This was Eddie Rosenow He swept the floor every five minutes Don Hasbrook was m charge of him to see that he Carried out his work Se S1 Bon and Ronnie sang I Love You Truly Leon Fox and Bud Morrasy were the ones in charge We even had a carpenter at the prison and a very good one This was Jo Ann M01-man Jack Gentry guard She pounded nails into a board with a sledge hammer wearing boxing gloves and was singing with crackers in her mouth Our next talent had her own private business This 'was Barbara Clay It seems as though she would go around at night and steal the milk from cows and sell it She demonstrated to the audience how to milk a cow Rom L6 Moore was in charge Barbara Gentry was picked up in the desert It seems as though she stole some water from the people and let them die of thirst so that night she recited Peter Piper and each time she said Peter Piper she had to drink a glass of water Wayne Barron and Carol Verhagen were the next contestants Connie Hewitt and Jim Van Loo were the ones in charge They were c aught out on the football field singing love songs to each other after the curfew so that night they sang to the audience To end up the show the Freshmen pushed pennies across the floor and the winners received pies pushed in their faces This Page Sponsored By STAR COURIER Kewanee BROOKS MOTOR COMPANY Kevxanee . - . , I . , l. . u . . . . , . . . . . , . . .
