The twenty-four members of the Junior Class have been very busy this year. Some of our activities were making pom poms for the football games, having a bake sale in December, and serving a barbeque lunch one noon in January. The Juniors sold basketball schedule pencils printed in the class colors of red and grey. During the latter part of November the Juniors chose their class rings. The Juniors held a skating party on November 20 at the Princeton rink, with Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schwind as chaper- ones. The party stopped at the Steak House afterwards. On March 17 the Juniors sponsored the annual St. Pat- rick's Dance, with Harold Harney's Orchestra providing the music. With the coming of spring, the Junior Class was busy deciding the theme and making plans for the Junior-Senior Prom. Mr. Schwind was our class sponsor. In October Virgil Smith moved to Plainville, Kansas, leaving us a final membership of twenty. On September 5 the Seniors initiated us. Altogether we had a very messy day. All day we had to wear crazy costumes thought up by the Seniors. Whenever we met a Senior we had to get down on our hands and knees and say, Most Honorable Senior, a humble Freshman kisses thy feet. At noon we Freshmen pushed the Seniors uptown and back on a hay rack, which was very tiring. In the evening the Seniors had stunts for us to do before an audience in the gym, followed by a school dance given in our honor. On October 24 the Freshmen sponsored the Homecoming Dance, with Paul Russell for our orchestra. The dance was a big success. We had our first class party November 20. Eighteen of us went skating in Princeton. We had a fine time except for the bruises we collected on the skating rink. Miss Neff was our class sponsor this year. This page sponsored by: Scholes Drug Store, Sheffield Eclword's Nash Sales, Kewcmee 15 redkman .gnifiafion The Freshman Initiation took place at the new Sheffield Airport, where the seniors were awaiting the arrival of a late plane. It seemed that each of them had just returned from a trip to some part of the world, bringing back with them a person of unusual talents. To pass the time, announcer Duane Moore suggested the seniors have their guests demonstrate some of their talents. Wendell Smith started the' show by having Saundra Wickham, a wild African girl, do some of her native dances. Although her costume and the music were appropriate, Saundra was a little on the bashful side. Katie Thomas, a Swiss yodeler, was escorted by Wilbur Jones to the top of a step ladder. From this mountain top she gave a yodeling demonstration. Joann Kaufman and Elaine Jones had just returned from Paris bringing with them a pair of French beauty operators, Marilyn Kaufman and Paul Jenkins. These two gave a spirite demonstration of the egg shampoo and the original French mud pack. ' Nancy Prior, a native of Montana brought by Bud DeMay, showed us how to do some fancy rope tricks and ride a bucking bronco named Virgil Smith. Loreata Moore and Driscoll Drew had just returned from Hawaii, bringing with them a romantic pair of hula dancers, Catherine Ray and Gene Gibson, who gave a thrillin rformance of the hula. Mary Johnson, just returned from India, brought a Hindu gaki, Wanda Wilhelm, Wanda had to do the Hindu climbing rope trick and force a snake to rise from its basket. Next was Bill Fisher, a Roman orator brought by Kaye Garrison. Bill had to give an educational monologue on the subject of fleas, drinking a glass of water each time he used the word fleas, Duane Moore, coming from a Chicago vacation, brought back a famous south-side strip tease dancer, Bill McKee, who did a reverse strip tease act. h Arleta Peterson couldn't resist the New York night club singer, Phil Cunningham, who sang away the girls' earts. 1 dd Frank Gebeck had his Dog Patch couple, Lela Standard and Stanley Moore, feed each other from a high step a er. Harold Lambert brought a tight rope walker, Paul Griffin, who walked blindfolded over a tub of cold water. Matador Gladys Barton and bull Karen Drew gave an exciting Spanish bull fight. They were broughtfrom Spain by Sally Hortega. Kay Hodkins was blind-folded and tied to a board as a target for a thrilling knife throwing act, without know- ing that real knives would not be used. Lorraine Beyn found this unique act in northern India. Ellen Nutter brought Ann Nell Schwind, who gave some interesting imitations. The last act before the lplane arrived was presented by Vernon Pease, who had stolen a Ringling Bros. clown, Mary Clubine. Mary walke on a rolling barrel. The Cardinals, backed by sincere confidence of coaches, Fred Radunzel and Fred Schwind, gained poise and abilitywith every victory and compiled the best record of any Sheffield Football team -9 victories, 0 defeats. Hard work, thewill to win, and the Never say die attitude were present in the team and the finished product was something for everyone to be proud of. The team was very capably co-captained by Kaye Garrison and Driscoll Drew, and as for outstanding players, the entire team was outstanding. All mem- ers of the starting 8 were elected to one or more All-Star teams. Through out the season the reserves saw lots of action, so depth was also noticed on the squaa. BIRDS MAUL BUDA, 18-0 The Buda Bears succumbed to the Sheffield juggernaut 18-0. Our boys were etting used to our new style of play Qa shift from T Formation to singlewingj hence the low score. Three touchdowns were called back because of minor rule infractions. SHEFFIELD SOCKS MANLIUS 18-'7 The Red Devils from Manlius were the next to fall before the power and speed of the Cardinal's football machine, Since Manlius had a much better team than our first foe and the score was about the same, the staglp was being set for what was in line for all future S effield opponents. Tiskilwa was worn out after the first half and the final score saw Sheffield way out in front. Here was- the game we showed the world we could al- so pass. SHEFFIELD CRUSHES BUREAU 40-33 The Bureau Wildcats were the next victim and they fell before the mighty Cardinals as had the others. The Cardinals' expert passing and running gave them a 40-33 victory over the Wildcats. SHEFFIELD PUMMELS MALDEN 52-21 The Malden Musketeers were completely outclassed in this one. The Sheffield reserves played over three quarters of the tglame and the final score was still 52- 21. It was at is point of the season' that the squad whittled down from 22 to 15 players due to injuries incurred during practice. SHEFFIELD BEATS LAMOILLE 52-13 The LaMoille Lions were completely humiliated by what they expected to be a lucky Sheffield squad. The game was marked by high-spirited play by both teams and the Cards flew of the field owning a 52- 13 victory. This was our tune-up battle for the ex- pected tight game the next week. SHEFFIELD NUDGES WYANET 45-13 The Wyanet Eagles watched the Cardinals fly by in this one. Sheffield was not ex cted to hold up under the barrage of tplasses thrown E3 Wyanet but despite 50 some passes rown and 27 completed the Cards had little trouble winning 45-13. It was this weekend that the world was notified that nothing was going to stop the Cardinals. SHEFFIELD SWEEPS ZEPHYRS 33 -'7 The Cardinals ut on the Neponset Zephyrs air-brakes and flew aheadp for a 33-7 victory. LEFT HALF, DRISCOLL DREW, also gave the team a helping, push by scoring 13 TD's and 8 extra .points for a total of 86 pts. Drew was named All-Conference 4th, team back. Terry Tuss made the last TD in the Championship game with a 15- yard run. During the season Terry racked up 11 TD's and 1 extra point. Terry will e bac with us next year. to give the team power and drive. JACK GENTRY, All-Conference end and the Cardinals right-end terror, was a boy who could really block and run. Jack, a junior, will be wearing the Red and White for another season, and we hope it will be as vic- torious as this year. Jack made 3 TD's and 2 extra points for a total tally of 20 points. KAYE GARRISON, All-Conference 3rd, team Tackle, was one of our best blockers and tacklers. One of the two Seniors in the forward wall, Kaye was a member of the ALL -CONFERENCE BEST ALL-ROUND LINE. Wayne will be wearing the Sheffield Red and White for two more years and we hope that those years will be as good as this year. CONRAD fKnuteJ HEWITT, a Junior made up the 5th man in the Cardinals' unbreakable wall of defense. Knute received Honorable Mention in the All-Conference team. With three years of experience behind him he will be a big asset to the team in the remaining year of service he has left... Each show consisted of an entrance, a salute to the visiting team, the Sheffield S formation for the singing of the School Song, and a drarnatization portrayed by music and formations. The first show at the September 12 Buda game, dramatized the experiences of a farmer, Duane Moore, and his girl friend, Lorraine Beyn, who went to the County Fair. The farmer rode the merry-go-round that broke down, visited a side show to see the fat lady, and had his heart pierced by Cupid's arrow. It all ended well when the farmer took his girl to the races. ROW 2: Walter Hasbrook, Kaye Garrison, Jack Gentry, Harold Lambert, Wayne Smith, Coach Fred Against non-conference foes Sheffield did very well, winning 7 games and losing 4. The Cards of Coach Radunzel started off with a sizzling 81-50 romp over Toulon. Then came the Mineral game, with the Cards having little difficulty in cutting the rival Leopards down to size: Sheffield 64, Mineral 49. Next came Manlius, with the Red Devils ending up on top, 59-47, as the Cards just couldn't seem to click. In the tightest game of the season, Walnut edged us 56-55 in a nip and tuck battle all the way. Tiskilwa Q67-535 and Wethersfield Q62-443 were the Cards next victims. Then the Cambridge Vikings ended a five-game Sheffield winning streak by defeating the Cards, 64-45. After this defeat the Car s bounced back to top Annawan, 68-55, only to lose their next game to Mineral, 61-42. Then the Cardi- nals fattened their winning column by defeating Atkinson, 59-52. We played Buda for our last non- conference game, and this contest ended 80-61 with the Cardinals on the long end. HOLIDAY TOURNEY Sheffield held their Second Annual Holiday Tourney this year, and Coach Radunzel and his boys walked off with the top honors. Against Wyanet the Cards won 74-62. Sixty-eight fouls were called in this game, under the experimental foul rule whereby no player fouls out. In the championship game with Neponset, Coach Radunzel cleared the bench in an 81-65 rout. LITTLE EIGHT CONFERENCE TOURNEY This year the conference officials voted to seed the Tourney, and Sheffield was seeded third. Drawing Manlius in their first ame the Cardinals of Coach Radunzel played a superb' ball game, and knocked the No. 2 team .out of the Tourney, 70-62, This game ave the Cards their revenge for two earlier defeats by the Red Devils. In their second game the Cari ran into considerable trouble from LaMoille, but they never were behind and ended up on the long end of a 67-61 score. In the champion- ship game against Ohio, we thought we had a good chance of winnin but it must not have been in the books as the Cardinals staged a cold streak and the Bulldogs got I1ot . We went down to OIII worst defeat of the year, 63-43. CONFERENCE GAMES The Cardinals ended the season with a 6 won, 3 lost record to lace Third in the final Little 8 standings. The Cards started by meeting the defending champions, Olhio. The Bulldogs, after lead- ing all the way, were pressed into an overtime period, but they ended up on the long end, 55-51. Then a 74-34 Sheffield victory over Buda evened the record at 1 and 1. The next week saw the Cardina1's championship hopes fade considerably as the Red Devils of Manlius came from behind in the last four minutes to win, 60-56, Feeling that these two defeats were enough, the Cards won the next four con- ference games: Tiskilwa 82-58g Bureau Township 62-56g Malden 96-69g and La Moille 88-66. Then Wyanet surprised the Cardinals by beating us 48-45, We won our last conference game, defeating Neponset 81-73. DISTRICT TOURNEY Our first opponent in the District Tourney was Atkinson. The Cardinals were as cold as we've seen them during the first half and fell too far behind to be able to catch up despite a terrific fourth quarter rally. After four important and unforgettable years, graduation is finally here, and as we put on our caps and gowns, our hearts and minds are filled with memories and thoughts of our high school days. It was on Aufgust 30, 1949, when the upper-classmen hailed us on registration day in S.H.S,7' We were the proud class o '53, We fervently hoped the hill ahead of us wouldn't e too steep to climb. The twenty-three members in our class were: Lorraine Beyn, Joe Fox, Driscoll Drew, Kaye Garrison, Harold Lambert, Frank Gebeck, Sally I-lortega, Bud DeMay. Joe Johnson, Don Pinney, Vernon Pease, Wilbur Jones, Duane Moore, AliceLempke, Joan Kaufman, Wendell Smith, Loreata Moore, Arleta Peterson, Shirley Rodgers, Mary Johnson, Carol Rosnett, and Elaine Jones. At our first class meeting the election of officers was as follows: President-Duane Moore, Vice President- Joe Johnson, Secretary-Charles DeMay, Treasurer-Frank Gebeck. Our class sponsor was Miss Kuczera. We chose blue and white for our class colors. For our first exciting class arty we attended a movie at the Wanee theatre in Kewanee. Then we planned our Freshman dance which was iield on April 28, 1952. Several of the Freshman boys took an active part in the school athletics. Many of us went out for football and crosscountry, not knowin that in our Senior year we would be little 8 champs in both. Ellen Nutter, formerly of Mineral, joined our class this year. ln the fall of 1950 the Sophomore Class met with twenty-one members under the sponsorship of Mr. Martin Stephenson. Shirley Rodgers and Carol Rosnett did not return. The officers elected were as follows: President-Frank Gebeck. Vice-President-Mary Johnson, Secretary-Sally Hortega, Treasurer-Kaye Garrison. The Socphomore girls were able to participate in Home Economics this year and also F,H.A . Several of the boys again efended the Red and White by participating in sports. On November 21, our class held the first social event of the year when we attended a movie in Kewanee. On January 19, 1951, we danced to the music of Jerry DeFreez at our So homore Dance. In the fall of 1951, all twenty-one members gathered at school to gegin our Junior year. Our class spon- sor again was Mr. Stephenson. The officers elected were: President-Duane Moore, Vice President-Vernon Pease, Secretary-Charles DeMay, Treasurer-Harold Lambert. The following were elected cheerleaders: Lorraine Beyn for her second time and Bud DeMay for his first. Harold Lambert and Bud DeMay were chosen for characters in the Little 8 play contest. Harold portrayed Joel and won a second major award for his good performance. Bud played George and won male lead for the second consecutive year. Mary Johnson was chosen to go to Girls State and Harold Lambert to Boys State, while Bud DeMay went to Egyptian Music Camp. A -illhe ilgggor play, Adams Evening, a comedy directed by Mrs. Roy Shull, was successfully presented on pri , , This year we went all out for selling candy, milk, pop corn, pencils, decals, and football pins to make money for our treasury. Our class also donated S100 toward the purchase of the new basketball scoreboard. On May 17, after many hours of work decorating the Country Club, the Juniors entertained the Seniors at a banquet and prom: the theme being A Night in Hawaii. Then came to a close another successful year for the class of '53, D It was the 29 day of August, 1952, that 18 members walked in the schoolhouse door to start their last year in Sheffield High. Alice Lempke and Don Pinney did not return. Joe Fox married early in the year and is now living in Buda. The officers elected were: Duane Moore-President, Mary Johnson-Vice President, Harold Lambert-Secretary, and Loreata Moore-Treasurer. Our class sponsor was John A. Host. One of the high-lights of the year was the Freshman Initiation and dance held on Sept. 5 in the school gym. On Sept. 26 the class worked hard to get many ads for our yearbook. We are already making graduation plans and have discussed many details concerning our class trip at the end of the year. Due to a very active year we have not had time for a class party. Our Senior play, The Case of the Sulky Girl, which was given on Nov. 21 was an exciting mystery that was well presented under the direction of Mr. James Balotti. J The majority of our class kept in step with activities all four years by playing in the band directed by Mr. John A. Host. These musical notes will linger with us throughout our lives. We are looking forward to the Junior-Senior prom and the Senior trip, which as yethasn't been decided up- on. MSO far this year our class activities have been very successful and everything seems to be progressing very we . As tomorrow lies in the hands of the students today, we are on our way to do our best. The following teachers have been with us all four years of our high school career: Mr. Willard Harlan, Mrs. Duane Peterson, Mr. Fred Schwind, Mr. John Host. We thank the faculty who have made our education their business and who have become our friends as well as our instructors. This page sponsored by: W. H. SENIOR CLASS MOTTO A LIVE WIRE NEVER GETS STEPPED ON fl I ,,f- R 4 f .3 4 f 'hkhd . to ,s .KI N pa, -lm ff f K 7+,f?faf POP QC Here we are in the Corner Spot night club owned by the one and only Elaine Jones. Yes, Elaine is once again single, and has graciously consented to hold the class reunion here in her beautiful night club. Most o us remember when it was a small hot dog stand. Here come the first arrivals now. They are Wendell Smith and his wife, Marie. Wendell has decided upon a military career and is now a lieutenant in the Air Force. They tell me Marie isworried because she thinks Wendell might find some beautiful angel while up flying someday. Now joining t em at the table is Loreata Moore, wife of t e prominent Dr. Johnny Pruitt. I have been informed she has seven charming daughters. Rita says she enjoys being the wife of a doctor. What's this coming? Oh, I see it's Vernon Pease and his wife, the former Mary Clubine. Their ap- pearance is a little startling, for they came in one of the jets Willie tests, and are both wearing space suits. The gentleman sitting next to Mrs. Pruitt is our eligible bachelor, Duane Moore. Duane has done well for himself in the special education field. He now heads a large school in New York for the physically handicapped. , Taking an entire table for themselves are the former Sally Hortega and her husband Lupe Rios and eleven children. Sally has been gifted with three sets of triplets and one set of twins. Because they couldn't get a baby sitter they had to bring the family along. Now entering are Driscoll and Lorraine Drew. Driscoll is the captain of a ship in the U.S. Navy. Lorraine is still wondering why Driscoll's shi accidentally stalled in Hawaii. The piano solo is being played by a studjent of Arleta Peterson. She now hasastudio in Southern Cali- fornia and has just started giving a much needed piano lesson to the former President of the United States. Over in the corne,r we find actor Charles DeMay and his wife. Bud has made several movies, the lat- est is Way Down East . Bud is now living in Hollywood. Harold Lambert and his wife Joyce just came in through the east wall. Harold is now a famous magi- cian. I hear he has pulled two fine children from his hat. I have just received a telegram of regret from Joe and his wife Wanda Johnson. He says he is sorry he will be unable to attend but he is needed at one of his lumber camps. Wilbur Jones, the millionaire, and wife Sharon have just entered. Wilbur says he made his first mil- lion selling his Model T to an antique dealer. Ellen Nutter and Bud and Frank Gebeck and Nellie have just entered. Bud owns a shale plant and Frank farms. I'll bet Frank's five boys come in handy on the farm. Ellen said that Bud and she are living a very comfortable life in their mansion overlooking Hollywood. The nurse that just entered is none other than Joann Kaufman. She's connected with TWA airlines and is helping to increase the com pany's business very much. By the way she's single. I see Mary Iohnsonn figuring on the table cloth. Maybe some new formula. Mary is the wife of a famous hydrogen bomb scientist and is quite well noted as an economist. She says she got her start trying to find a way to buy her class Cpictures. Kaye Garrison an wife Martha just drove up in their Cadillac. Kaye owns a cheese plant in outer Sheffield and says he will raise his children on his good cheese. They competed in five games and were unable to chalk up a win. Most of the boys on the team were in seventh grade so the experience should help them out during the following year. They were successful in winning nine out of seventeen games. In the Bureau Valley Elementary Conference they tied for first places in the western division of the conference, losing the play-off to Manlius by only one point, after leading throughout the entire game until the last five seconds. ln the championship game between the eastern and western division of the Conference, Sheffield lost to Princeton 37 to 18 thus settling for fourth place in the entire county and contributing the fourth place trophy to the trophy case. In the county tournament Sheffield won their first game against Bureau Township, only to taste bitter defeat in the second game with Neponset 24 to 19. With the majority of the squad being seventh grade boys, prospects look very bright for another year. 80 X sv X595 P' FN' ,it if Q . The majority o the players were recruited from the seventh grade. With only three heavyweiglhts on the entire squad prospects were not too good. The other two players had to be recruite from the lightweight ranks. The heavyweights did not fare too wellg out of eleven games only two games were won but the boys showed constant improvement. The first game of the tournament was lost to Walnut 32 to 12. Flyweights At Ohio the heavyweights did not play, so a group of fifth, sixth, and seventh glade b0YS played a flyweight game, winning 16 to 15.
