The Shawnee Indians lived in the eastern forests of North America. They built their wig- wam villages along riverbanks in many states, including Virginia. Little is known about their way of life because they split into many wandering groups and lived away from well-traveled routes. Thus, it is only fitting that the 1965 SHAWNEE adopt as its theme the symbol of Alleghany Dis- trict High School itself. For we, the students of ADHS, resemble the Shawnee Indians in that we, too, will split into many groups and go our sepa- rate ways in life. As we graduate from high school, we have the choice of continuing our education or seeking employement. No matter what our choice, no matter whether we travel the little-known paths or the well-traveled routes in life, we shall leave our mark on the civilization of today and that of tomorrow. For this reason, the editor has chosen to call the students of this school gf H ' ' ' ' ,1 F..-' ANOTHER SCHOOL DAY HAS ENDED . . . Through her endless efforts she guides students into the past in world history and American history. She succeeds in giving students an under- standing of present-day government and an appreciation of democracy in senior government class. It is with sinc ere feelings of grat- itude that we honor a fine person, a friend, and a dedicated teacher and dedicate the 1965 SHAWNEE to Mrs. Lena Gardner Sammons. 2 N 542 ' 1 it IF ONLY GOVERNMENT CLASS WAS LIKE THIS LISTEN AND LEARN. . . Shawnee Chiefs .b.h..' MR. DAVID P. ROBINETTE Principal B.S., VPIg M.Ed., VPI. MISS GERALDINE HALL Secretary Leod Members of the Tribe America was discovered by a man trying to find a better way to go places. American education has been trying to do that ever since. Everyone who completes the require- ments for high school graduation cannot be called educated. Whom, then do Icall educated? First, those who manage well the circumstances which they encounter day by day, and those who possess a judgment which is accurate in meeting occasions as they arise and rarely misses the expedient course of action. Next, those who are honorable in their dealings with all men, bearing easily what is unpleasant or offensive in others, and being as reasonable to their associates as it is humanly possible. Furthermore, those who hold their pleasures always under control, and are notunduly overcome by their misfortunes, bearing up under them bravely and in a manner worthy of our common nature. Most important of all, those who are not spoiled by their successes, who do not desert their true selves, but hold their ground steadfastly as wise and sober- mindedmen, rejoicing no more in the good things that have come to them through chance than in those which through their own nature and intelligence are theirs since birth. Those who have a character which in accord, not with me of these things, but with all of them, these are educated. To those of you graduating this year, I wish to remind you that education and life go hand in hand. Education does not end at 3 P.M. each afternoon, it does not end in the spring, it does not end. . . until you do. David P. Robinette Chiefs Guide Students MR. WILLIAM P. Perhaps the double overtime loss to Bland was the best example of this type of cliff-hanger . This type of game achieved student support and enthusiasm and could be counted on to draw fans. The high point of the season for the team was the 76-67 victory over the Eagles of Rocky Gap. The whole team was really up for the game as it was the last chance for a District S victory and a revenge for the disastrous score in the game at Rocky Gap. The Shawnee zone completely dominated play and provided much satisfaction for the players' desire for avenging their earlier loss. The not quite untarnished 7-10 record of the Shawnees will never be looked back on by the undergraduates as one of the school's most successful seasons, but the team worked hard, and, on occasions, showed touches of excel- lence. Of the team's ten losses, the Shawnees compiled an astounding accumulation of near misses by losingfour games by one point, three others by two points, and one additional game by three points. Perhaps next year's team will obtainalittle of the luck that always seemed to allude this year's squad.
