rs if 'l Summer clinics stress excellence lust one more time! , was a fa- miliar phrase at summer clinics. Even though the work could be tor- ture, the students were determined to practice until they were excellent. For many students summer was full of intense drilling which brought about perfection. Drill Team attended the All- American Drill Team School at Kan- sas University in Iune, and brought home nine blue ribbons, plus first place in marching and pom pon routines out of 150 competitors. Brenda Ventrella proved that hard work pays off by being selected the most outstanding marcher. Melanie Swanson was runner up for most outstanding dancer. To better understand marketing and retailing, four hard-working DECA students attended the Na- tional Career Development Confer- ence in Houston, Texas, during the second week of May. Only first and second place winners from the Kan- A l gg i Y if 'Z .Q 'xr S 1 i 5 l sas State Competition were able to participate with the 7,500 in atten- dance. Lord Sz Taylor, Sears, and the Astro Hall were the sites of DECA competition. George Taylor, the Kansas State DECA President, was the voting delegate from Kansas. Attending Casavant Cavalcade Drum Major Camp in Hastings, Ne- braska, Ianey Bell was voted most outstanding drum major among 90 participants. Ianet Trentman, junior, also attended the camp. Students from the Midwest participated to improve directing and marching techniques. In learning new fundamentals of teaching, the drum majors practiced from 6:30 in the morning until late at night with only a few short breaks which en- abled them to help band, Drill Team and Flag Team. Although I learned a lot, being in 'Cornsville' during the hottest time of the summer is not the most exciting! , said janet Trentman. Summer Clinics 19
