emi-finalist more than just brains National Merit Semi-finalists? They're just a bunch of brains. However, this statement proved to be inaccurate. Even though the fourteen winners can boast that they are in the top V2 of one percent of college and high school students who took the 1977 Preliminary Scholastic Appitude Test, approximately one million students, they are far from being just typical bookworms. Sports, drama, music and school publications are just a few areas in which these talented and in- telligent students were involved. The hours they put into extra activities such as jobs, church and groups are as numerous as anyone else's and some of these book worm types can even be seen at an occasional party. Those students who scored in the top two percentile but below the semi-finalist level received Letters of Com- mendation. Their accomplishments are as numerous as the semi-finalists' and their talents are as diverse. Many seem to actually spend more time in outside activities than in school work, though their grades donit reflect this fact. They are smart and they are talented. South was lucky to have such individuals in its midst. 138 National Merit

ds An athlete's world is full of tough breaks, aching muscles and fans with en- couraging words only when a win is plac- ed on record. Some called them animals, some called them jocks, but they were only kids born with a competitive nature. All of the seasons were long and tedious, but the will to win, to surpass other schools in that race for the state title, kept all of the athlete's heads held high even when the season didn't seem worth finishing. They always looked forward to that next game, striving to be better and hoping to be the best. 140 Sports g XgW innvxss X-
