V , 9' v Q When I think about the freedom at Northwest, I canit do it without letting my mind wander back into my sopho- more year when Northwest was still only an idea. At my old school, privi- leges were plenty . . . but freedom? The term was never used. Coming here showed me what I had been missing without realizing so. Certainly the greatest realization of all was the Mall, yet that was merely a beginning. The Mall is more than just a huge concrete hall, it's an involvement and a respon- sibility. You are involved with other people and therefore they become your responsibility. Learning goes beyond textbooks, lectures, worksheets-even past electives and slide projects. Learn- ing is found in your heart as well as your mind. The tools for such educa- tion are empathy and communication. Freedom is difficult to define. I have tried to do so but Janis Joplin expresses it better . . . freedoms just another word for nothing left to losef, To me, freedom is that, nothing to lose and everything to gain. Introduction 5
