It is almost as if nothing ex- isted outside the school. This is bad because eventually students will leave the school environment. The high school years are good ones for students to find their role in the community. I feel that this is one of Northwest's strengths. The emphasis on involving the school and the community with one another both socially and in learning experiences has been in many ways helpful. I think, too, that in the past the community has had only a bystander role in the schools and welcomes the chance to be more. It's another way of breaking down the walls that have separated students from the community. Introduction 15
