rffl tj, 5-Sl This year I found that teachers are more than human machinesg giving me homework . . . D's on my report card, and asking me questions I can't answer. I got to know a teacher as a person capable of expressing emotion and feel- ing. I discovered that teachers actually laugh, and have problems of their own. I found that she was little different than me-just older. It got so I could talk over my problems with her, tell her who I liked and who I disliked, knowing it would go no further. She even valued my opinion . . . she lis- tened to what I had to say. I could tell her a joke without reservation. She told me about some of her idiosyncrasies and I think she knew some of mine. She would laugh with me when I made a mistake and help me if I didn't un- derstand. Teachers are more than ma- chines. They're people too! Introduction 11

I learned not only about the activity itself but about other aspects of school, the System, varying viewpoints, and, entangled emotions. I also trained myself to piece puzzles together and to catch ever-running dreams with the touch of fingertips. Most of all, activities drew me into the vanishing art of knowing people. Shar- ing seems seldom put into use but in order for this function of school life to flourish, it must. An activity is sharing a common cause and in doing so, my own personal goals were awakened. 1 I O' f ' x ' f 'fin tr 11 I Y ,2 '42 I M Q A-5-G X 'Y 1- 1 'K K ,,.-li'lviv'. .afifrigigh ' ,, it 14' ' Y. lg ' iam!! 03 'ans-,5,.a ,
