Returning from summers of industry andfor pleasure, S-Mites plunged into another nine months of feverish activity. Plans for 1957-58, devised during the sum- mer awaited only the touch of the students' hands. The year had scarcely begun when the Flu hit Shawnee- Mission. Nearly five hundred students succumbed as the swollen absence list continued to grow. No sooner was this crisis passed when another wave of excitement swept through the building. Red roses ap- peared, and members packed maroon and gray uni- forms when the band eagerly accepted an invitation to march in the Tournament of Roses Parade. A spe- cial concert, fund-raising drives, and donations from all over the area made the invitation a reality. Not to be outdone, the vocal music department and the orchestra staged the greatest production in S-M's musical history, Oklahoma! With delegates from forty-six states, Alaska, and Hawaii, S-M hosted the largest convention of its kind in the nation's history. An eventful year? Most observers agreed that it was. This was a year filled with experiences which helped mold personality and develop character, and FROM THESE WE GREW. These experiences are recorded here, for now and forever. 1
