KN Custodians: Night Crew ' f'7'?7'Z7V .1 ., .-I W'Wzcfif72Wc:f.xfcfv Custodians: Day Crew Eggs: The custodial staff and cafeteria personnel both worked dili- gently in order to make the atmosphere at SM East conducive to learning. Besides doing the usual ianitorial chores, such as sweeping floors and washing windows, the custodial staff participated in a pilot program concerned with energy conservation. To make the building more energy efficient, the entire heating plant was overhauled and many doorways were altered thus creating buffer zones. Mr. Ken Chipman, the head custodian, was in charge of these renovations. Hot, delicious, nutritious food was available in the cafeteria. Those people surviving the scramble were able to eat balanced meals, thanks to the cafeteria personnel. I ,,,,,. Q .i Y i - Shawnee Mission East proudly claimed the larg- est PTA in the state of Kansas this year. In addi- tion, the Association was voted as one of the out- standing PTA units in the nation. Involvement peaked as 1500 memberships were sold. The dedicated PTA members volunteered over five thousand working hours by baking cookies, grading papers, hostessing, or any one of a vari- ety of proiects. They sponsored the only College Clinic in Johnson County, which had the largest participation of colleges in the midwest. Another activity of major importance was the planning and chaperoning of the after-prom party. The PTA also sponsored the annual Art Purchase Award along with the Carl lson Outstanding Senior in Perform- ing Arts Award. The PTA was an integral part of SM East this year. The involvement of the parents and teachers was greatly appreciated by the students. Under the direction of Mrs. James Fowler, the PTA pro- vided the necessary support and encouragement for a successful year. PTA Power ,f .fx FXR 1 W H? 'E' L. 5 , 1 w, - Q. ll U oiiflffiiv

Hines, Photography, Oils, Drawing, Acrylic Paint- Renovation struck again! Air ducts, plumbing, and an increased electrical capacity were some of the improve- ments made in old rooms. The older rooms were not only painted but also filled with new cabinets and furni- ture. A sculpture patio, a gas line, and a new box for the gas kiln were also welcomed. A newly acquired addition led to great excitement. East now had a dark room and a photography room. Photography classes began second semester. Drawing, painting, Art I, ceramics, iewelry, and tex- tiles were iust a few of the many art courses available. Students were able to express individuality from the many techniques they learned. The exceptional artwork some students created was displayed in the halls at East and in art shows. Each unique display of art enriched the school in a cultural manner. Aspiring students of art were able to have their names known throughout East and also com- pete for awards. The creative resources at East helped to produce the great works of art. E 1 if' ing, C.
