Q .i Y i - Shawnee Mission East proudly claimed the larg- est PTA in the state of Kansas this year. In addi- tion, the Association was voted as one of the out- standing PTA units in the nation. Involvement peaked as 1500 memberships were sold. The dedicated PTA members volunteered over five thousand working hours by baking cookies, grading papers, hostessing, or any one of a vari- ety of proiects. They sponsored the only College Clinic in Johnson County, which had the largest participation of colleges in the midwest. Another activity of major importance was the planning and chaperoning of the after-prom party. The PTA also sponsored the annual Art Purchase Award along with the Carl lson Outstanding Senior in Perform- ing Arts Award. The PTA was an integral part of SM East this year. The involvement of the parents and teachers was greatly appreciated by the students. My car wouldn't start and I had to park in the pool parking lot. I couldn't help it. Third hour yesterday? Well, I was uh-um . . . Passes to get into class, out of class, and unexcused absentees were all part of the busy day for the attendance clerks. They were also required to do terrific amounts of filing and searching for missing students. The attendance center was more centrally located this year, moving the noise and confusion out of the office area. Students with ailments ranging from a headache to a broken bone, were turned over to the capable hands of Mrs. Dorn, the school nurse. She supplied the student with cough drops and safety pins. She provided all of the health services for our school with a smile. Her work often required her to be seriously concerned for the students, but she also reserved an air of skepticism for those students she saw too often. Enforcing the school attendance policy, the attendants had their hands full keeping students in school and in class. The nurse certainly had her work cut out for her, tending to the ill. The efficient work of these two offices made them an integral part of our school. Aching or F aking?

KN Custodians: Night Crew ' f'7'?7'Z7V .1 ., .-I W'Wzcfif72Wc:f.xfcfv Custodians: Day Crew Eggs: The custodial staff and cafeteria personnel both worked dili- gently in order to make the atmosphere at SM East conducive to learning. Besides doing the usual ianitorial chores, such as sweeping floors and washing windows, the custodial staff participated in a pilot program concerned with energy conservation. To make the building more energy efficient, the entire heating plant was overhauled and many doorways were altered thus creating buffer zones. Mr. Ken Chipman, the head custodian, was in charge of these renovations. Hot, delicious, nutritious food was available in the cafeteria. Those people surviving the scramble were able to eat balanced meals, thanks to the cafeteria personnel. I ,,,,,.
