Under the guidance of Mrs. Barbara Vogt, the NHS conducted the annual Blood Mobile. The four officers, John Griffith, Kathy Gibbons, Mike Anthony, and Amy Usdin, were elected in the fall by members of the NHS. Together with Mrs. Vogt, they organized the blood drive and other com- munity oriented activities. Students were elected tothe National Honor Society by their teachers on the basis of academic performance and personality qualities. Students were eligible if they held a 3.0 grade point average or better. Leadership, character, and service were among the qualities voted upon, other than scholarship. The new National Honor Society members were inducted into the Society in the spring with the traditional and impressive candlelighting ceremony in May on Honors and Awards night. Through the NHS, students developed leadership qualities in the communi- ty. ACTIVITIESXT7

uill and Scroll- Talented Journalists While Quills and Scrolls went out of style with the powdered wig, the Quill and Scroll is a group that is alive, well, and flourishing in our high schools all over the United States. its purpose is to give deserving high school journalists some recognition for outstanding achievements on their school publications. What are the criteria for membership in the Quill and Scroll? One prerequisite is involvement with one of East's publications-namely the Harbinger, the Labyrinth, or the Hauberk. Then, the matter goes to a higher court-a selective review board made up of Mr. Robert Dillon, Harbinger advisor, and Ms. Linda Thom- son, Hauberk advisor. Those students who are suitably qualified to complete this judging process successfully are entitled to call themselves full-fledged Quill and Scroll members. Along with the honors of membership in this organization, students receive a year's subscrip- tion to the official Quill and Scroll newsletter as a tangi- ble reward.
