l The ultimate in creative captions arise from the fertile minds of Ken and Paul-National Merit Scholars. De Merits Last September, 13 Shawnee Mission East students were recognized as semifinalists in the National Merit scholarship competition. These lucky 13 earned this honor as a result of scores on the PSAT, taken in October of their junior year. To qualify, they had to score in the top V2 of 1 percent of those who took the test. On a national level, 15,000 students from more than 7,000 schools were chosen for this honor. By taking the SAT to confirm previous high scores, students could qualify as finalists. lf they achieve this status they are eligible for more than 3,- 000 scholarships to schools all over the country. The program also awarded letters of commendation to 21 East students. These 21 out of 38,000 nationally, rank- ed in the top 2 percent of high school seniors. Although they weren't eligible to compete for the scholarships, the letters of Commendation were in recognition of their ex- cellent execution on the test. Under the guidance of Mrs. Barbara Vogt, the NHS conducted the annual Blood Mobile. The four officers, John Griffith, Kathy Gibbons, Mike Anthony, and Amy Usdin, were elected in the fall by members of the NHS. Together with Mrs. Vogt, they organized the blood drive and other com- munity oriented activities. Students were elected tothe National Honor Society by their teachers on the basis of academic performance and personality qualities. Students were eligible if they held a 3.0 grade point average or better. Leadership, character, and service were among the qualities voted upon, other than scholarship. The new National Honor Society members were inducted into the Society in the spring with the traditional and impressive candlelighting ceremony in May on Honors and Awards night. Through the NHS, students developed leadership qualities in the communi- ty. ACTIVITIESXT7
