GIRLS' STATE: Lisa Adler -W1 if ii 1 W LLL WWW NM Boys' State: Fid Norton Boys' And Girls' State Young men and women from across Kansas assembled at K.U. for several days during the summer in Boys' and Girls' State programs spon- sored by the American Legoin. Representatives from Shawnee Mission East studied and practiced concepts and principles of self-government. Boys are assigned arbitrarily to a city and coun- ty, and then perform the duties relating to their specific offices. Each city elects a mayor and each county a representative for the state legislature. in the congress delegates discussed such relevant issues as abortion and para-mutuel betting. Divided equally into two political parties, girls vied for city, county, and state offices through petition and open election. Along with staging a legislative forum, girl delegates chose a Supreme Court to advise and decide on current topics. Dor- mitory living offered relaxation and fun.
