virualizing significance of the .rpoken word . . . With the start of a new year, decisions were prevalent among the Shawnee Mission teaching staff as well as the pupils under their authority. In an effort to solidify the stu- dent-faculty relationships, junior and senior high instructors met as the Faculty Associa- tion to examine new concepts of education. The meetings on the local level of the Association involved panel deliberations and guest speakers who presented the faculty with greater insight about their purpose and rede- fined their goals as educators. They adopted new policies of teaching procedure and modi- fications of curriculum, thus keeping the dis- trict schools up to date in the ever-changing realm of education. The utilization of a com- bination of the time-tested and the new was just one more responsibility of S-M faculty. ALWAYS DO'RI6H'l'. Legg M at ,i ENC, ' w CANVASSING COLORFUL POSSIBILITIES Perhaps they Weren't starving in a drafty garret, daubing at canvases by a dismal north light, but the fact remains: they were still artists. Unlike their tradi- ionally underprivileged predecessors, students in the arts and crafts department at S-M East were given each and every opportunity to fully develop their creative talents. Exploring such relatively new mediums as lay- ered palomar, casins and silk screening provided many with a highly versatile training. Sketching intermittent- ly throughout the year, the more experienced artists worked in oils, employing new brush techniques and forming their own original style. Craftsmen were con- verted to part-time silversmiths and Wood carvers, fash- ioning fine art into something tangible. As many were due to find out, a definite asset to such a course was that water color devotees could be transformed into fervent sculptors at the mere flick of a paint brush.
