Computer Mania Hits Shawnee ,A X Q. gag., , Xt'-wi 2? . x g' : .' A ix is ' H ks. It seems appropriate that in the year Time Magazine proclaimed the computer as Machine of the Year, Shawnee High School became the new home of 11 computer termi- nals. Room C213 has taken on a new name this year - the Computer Room. A bond issue passed last year providing funds for the addition of 10 Apple II microcomputers, Corvusl Winchester disks for storage, and an Omninet system which networks the terminal in the library and the eleven terminals in C213 to the Corvus disk drive. Not only is Shawnee High School fortunate to have the computer room but the Business Department has three TRS-80 Model III microcomputers and two A. B. Dick text editors with dual disk drives, printers, and CRT,s. The Computer Room has been heavily used by the Finite Math classes. This course concentrates on programming these Apple terminals in the BASIC language, Computer club members also used the new machinery. These mem- bers have spent many afternoons writing programs or run- ning some of the existing programs. The Information Pro- cessing classes used the Computer Room to learn how to make the computer into a word processor and a data processor. Several teachers brought their classes to the Computer Room so their students could use some of the many relevant programs presently stored on the system. Though the Computer Room was a most welcome and well-used addition to Shawnee this year, we have only tapped the surface of the use of computers in education. We have so much more we can, and will, do with these little machines. This year we planted the Apple seed at Shaw- nee. ln the next decade we will see the rapid growth of this tree as it branches into many areas of our school. XY -Z? 'E L 169
