MUSIC, INC. 81 MCA MUSIC y cfo Publishers' Lincensing Corporation 94 Grand Avenue, Englewood, New Jersey 07631 Used By Permission All V Rights Reserved Dedication Given To Mrs. Bancroft And Mr. West Now that graduation day nears, we come to one of our final, yet greatest challengesg that of adequately expressing our appreciation to two extraordinary people - Mrs. Patricia A. Bancroft and Mr. Rickey L. West. As advisors and friends, they were always there when we needed them. They were a source of occasional chaos. They steadied our course and they gave us direction when the road got long or times got tough. Together they tempered our confusion. Our debt to them is immense. Yet, somewhere between the laughter and the good times, the challanges and the triumphs, we never quite found the time to tell them these things. Never have we thanked them for their dedication nor their patience. Never have we expressed to them our feelings. By dedicating our yearbook to them, we hope to show, finally, our great appreciation. The spirit they helped us culminate and the lessons they helped us learn will follow us throughout our lives. Thank you both. '+-...gl Last November 15 we received the sad, shocking news of the death of Mr. Robert Abbott, a dear friend and colleague. He had been a Shawnee Science teacher for 10 years, retiring in June, 1982. We were greatly blessed by the presence of this unique man. He was a retired U.S. Navy officer with 32 years' service, including many combat and reconnais- sance missions in the Pacific during World War ll and the Cuban Missile crisis of 1962. Mr. Abbott held three master's degrees and was a co-owner of many patents in aircraft metallurgy and assembly processes. Several col- leges offered him teaching positions upon his naval re- tirement. He chose instead to work at Shawnee, simply through love of Medford Lakes and the youth of our high school. This was a remarkable decision, since Mr. Abbott had ab- solutely no financial need whatever to work. He spent a considerable sum of his own money on the school, including the soundproofing of the AV center. His military career, antique car collection, photography and ama- ! , teur rocket hobbies provided us with a seemingly endless source of wonderful stories. As a teacher he was conscientious almost to a fault - often being the last Science teacher to the day to go home. He told a few of us the worst decision he ever made was to retire from c Shawnee, Bob Abbott's legacy was that of A pure, unselfish love, Those of us who were his students and fellow workers are blessed with the mem- ory of his friendship. Sadly, we'll never know a man quite like this again. f Front Office Secretaries - Standing - Mrs. E. J. I am Marianne Kangstrom and I am one of many exchange students from Sweden. I live with Mr. and Mrs. Oruska in Tamarac. They, like all Americans, are very nice to me. It has been a wonderful experience to be able to go to Shawnee. I have learned new things about the USA everyday. Like: Football games, Valentine's Day, and much much more. There are many things that are different from the school I am used to in Sweden. The academic side is not much different, but what I like best about Shawnee, is all the activities after school. I just hope more Americans could take this wonderful chance to be an exchange student. You would love it! I would like to thank everybody for making it a great year. If you would like to write or come and visit me in Sweden, here is my address: Marianne Kangstrom Storbergsvagen 26 14141 Huddinge Sweden Phone: 08-7744197 I hope to see you in Sweden some day! Love, Marianne .:: Sn '10 My name is Jens Dahm, I am seventeen years old and come from Hamburg, West Germany. I am a senior at Shawnee and I think it's great. I have one brother, who is fifteen years old. My father works for a shipping line and mysmother works for a blood transfusion institute.. The family I'm staying with over here is te Dereskewicz family. After three more years of High School in Germany, I want to go to a university. My major will be Journalism. I want to work later on the medias. My hobbies are: swimming, reading, music, photography, and traveling. I'm very interested in current events, a nuclear freeze. The music I'm interested in listening to is New Wave or Mod-Music, which comes from Great Britain. I really like it over here and I'm having a good time. I recognize that American and German way of life aren't that diferent and think if we work together we can do big things. i 01 EE rx Hi! I'm Hans Kittel and I come from Frankfurt, West Germany, a city thatls about half as big as Philadelphia. The general reasons for spending the school year at Shawnee are to make new friends and to improve my skills in speaking English. Shawnee is very similar to the school I go to in Germany, perhaps Shawnee is more strict and easier. My favorite subject is probably History, even though I get the worst grades in it. English is my least favorite. So far I'm enjoying my stay very much and I wish the year would last a little longer. U C an EE 55 -I My name is Karoline Lund and I was one of the Norwegian Exchange students chosen to spend one year at an American High School. So far this year has been very successful and full of new experiences, both good and bad, After being in one of these exchange programs, I think it is one of the best ways to learn about other countries, people and cultures, Anybody who has this chance should take it. I don't think you'll ever regret it. I would like to thank all of you who have helped me making this .year great, including my fantastic host family: Leslie, Linda, and Craig Baechler. I also hope I'll see some of you in Norway soon. I would love to show you a little bit of my country too! Love ya, Karoline P,S. Counciled by Miss Georgianne Kloss and Ms. Patricia Anthony, the team was cho- sen by eliminations from over 30 Shaw- nee students who originally competed. All schools taking part in the contest won S300 in scholarship money and had the chance to accumulate as much as 355,000 if they won the entire competi- tion. Despite a respectful defeat to Paul VI High School, Shawnee's Knowledge Bowl Team turned in an outstanding per- formance being the first school to appear on the NYT Cable televisionis Battle of the Brains. Also, Junior Jack Dennison's logo was chosen over 40 others submit- ted to be the offical logo of the broadcast program. 168 Teams from Shawnee flefti and Paul VI wait to begin tapingg the show is a high school version of the old 'College Bowl' program. , F J? .ff x M Standing Back Row: John Fantini, Gary Ennis, Mark Rowe, Roger Weaver, Miss Kloss. It seems appropriate that in the year Time Magazine proclaimed the computer as Machine of the Year, Shawnee High School became the new home of 11 computer termi- nals. Room C213 has taken on a new name this year - the Computer Room. A bond issue passed last year providing funds for the addition of 10 Apple II microcomputers, Corvusl Winchester disks for storage, and an Omninet system which networks the terminal in the library and the eleven terminals in C213 to the Corvus disk drive. Not only is Shawnee High School fortunate to have the computer room but the Business Department has three TRS-80 Model III microcomputers and two A. B. Dick text editors with dual disk drives, printers, and CRT,s. The Computer Room has been heavily used by the Finite Math classes. This course concentrates on programming these Apple terminals in the BASIC language, Computer club members also used the new machinery. These mem- bers have spent many afternoons writing programs or run- ning some of the existing programs. The Information Pro- cessing classes used the Computer Room to learn how to make the computer into a word processor and a data processor. Several teachers brought their classes to the Computer Room so their students could use some of the many relevant programs presently stored on the system. Though the Computer Room was a most welcome and well-used addition to Shawnee this year, we have only tapped the surface of the use of computers in education. We have so much more we can, and will, do with these little machines. This year we planted the Apple seed at Shaw- nee. ln the next decade we will see the rapid growth of this tree as it branches into many areas of our school. XY -Z? Community Service Volunteers are students who want to become active members of the community by giving their time to help others. Shawnee volunteers gain skills and self-confidence by reaching out to help others in the community. Students Actively Concerned KSACJ is a community service group that helps those of less fortunate lifestyles. They perform variety shows for the mentally and physically handicapped as well as for the elderly. SAC of Shawnee is a highly respected group in the community. It is known around the county for the fine work of its members. COMMUNITY SERVICE VOLUNTEERS Sitting - Barbara Lennox, Stacey Weisner, Pat Gorman, Elissa Amodeo, Kelly Ann Law. It is Shawnee's student organization de- signed to help in the community. Variety shows run by the students, organized by the students, and performed by the students are a way to help the handicapped and elderly make life a little ea- sier. The music of the performers helps a little girl with cerebral palsy clap her hands. It makes a lonely old man tap his foot for the first time in a long time. SAC is a highly respected group in the commu- nity. People know that this group of teenagers is out to help, not to hinder, and help they do. All through the school year SAC visits special places to help a small handicapped child cope and to give the elderly people the respect and gratitude to which they are entitled. SAC is a good experience for any member of Shawnee who would like to be involved in the community. Officers of 1982-83 Advisor - Sparkle Organizers - Colleen Hughes, Mary Ann Allen Project Committee - Romy Burkus, Michelle Drummond Child Care Studying children by observing them in our classroom is one of the favorite activities of the Child Care classes at Shawnee. Infants, toddlers, and preschoolers have been the objects of our curiosity and interest, and observing them in action makes the classroom a living laboratory. Former students, some of our teacher Mr. and Mrs. G. Williams, Mr. and Mrs. R. Pullen, Mrs. Dougherty, Mrs. Columbo, Mrs. Cappsl, and some of our classroom students have shared with us their own children or those of relatives and friends. Our study of these children involves several objectives: to recognize the predictable stages of child growth, to understand the relationship of these stages to other growth patterns, and to plan experiences which will stimulate new learnings. At the same time our students are developing greater powers of observation and new insights into their own development as well as preparing for future roles in parenting or related careers. The parents are invited to discuss the care areas with us, and they allow us to observe their infants in action as the students form a circle around them to watch and to interact. It is easier to remember in the mouth stage when we can relate it to a particular child. Eventually, after learning about developement to age six, the students plan for and carry out a mini-playschool for toddlers and preschoolers whom they invite through their own contacts. The sessions might be for two to three periods, three or more days a week for up to six weeks. The Family Living Room furniture is rearranged and the room is transformed into a child's world of small chairs, tables, toys, and games. Students prepare the area and the activity schedule, initiate the activities, handle the children individually and collectively, observe them and report on their observations. Students become teachers which allows them a new role of responsibility, and for some, new insights into their own preparedness for the adult model. For most, it is the pause in the day's occupation which could be known as the Children's Hourn because for this time period, it allows each student to rekindle a bit of the child she f he once was and to enjoy learning in a totally fun way. 196 ---41 TX-.13 I Libraries are not merely storehouses of the relics of the past, but meeting places for people and ideas, vital partners in our system of education. President's Commission of Libraries 'TW The school which thinks of education as something it helps students to do for themselves will have a large, active, busy library with students moving about, learning from books, from other materials, from each other - creating an atmosphere of people in pursuit of something. The media center is an attractive, two story, round room in the middle of the classroom building. Learning mate- rials available to students and teachers include books, magazines, newspa- pers, microforms, video tapes, listen- ing tapes, films, records, art works, and computerized information. Audio visual equipment is also distributed from the center. The media center staff is aided by student workers and adult volunteers from the community. The media specialists give book talks, make book lists, video tape programs, make slide-tape programs, teach refer- ence skills, obtain materials from other libraries, conduct orientation sessions, arrange special exhibits and events, as well as help find answers to questions and good books to read. It is an active center where the use of learning mate- rials is encouraged and where one can seek and find both information and inspiration. Harold Howe II, Commissioner of Education The SOS lsenior optional schedulel Program allows for Shawnee seniors to obtain part-time employment in many community businesses. Students who are fortunate to be members of Cooperative Office Edu- cation and Distributive Education pro- grams are given assistance in securing their positions while being supervised by their coordinator. These students are working in such places as Inter- boro Savings 8: Loan Association, Cranberry Pines School, Allen School, Taunton Forge School, Medford Township Office, Haines School, Shawnee Media Center, Jan R. Evans Law Office, John Wanamal-cer's, Mar- shallfs, Lucky-7, etc. Other students find their own em- ployment in places like Medford Leas, McDonald's, Acme, Thriftway, Shop 8z Bag, Eckerd Drugs, Glenn's Home Supply, area gas stations, and other local businesses. Mrs. Noble's devotion to Shawnee and our stu- dents was clearly evidenced by the many hours she was willing to spend with young people. She was, at one time, the advisor to the Biology Club, advisor to the class of 1978, and had been the advisor to the Student Council for several years. I-Ier schedule was never too full to accomodate a colleague, parent, student, ect. Whether in giv- ing energy, time, or just a willing ear. lShe also baked the greatest cinnamon buns.l Mrs. Noble was the mother of five children, a member of her church choir and active in other groups that assist less fortunate people. Clare's greatest legacy was her unselfish love for Shawnee High School and all the young people who passed through the doors. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her. One of the marks of true greatness is the ability to develop greatness in others. J.C.
