Leffel Lane, Springfield, Ohio 45505 THE VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS OF THE UNITED STATES A BROTHERHOOD OF OVERSEAS VETERANS LEGISLATIVE When the VFW speaks, Congress listens. Higher compensation for disabled veterans, protection of VA hospitals from other govern- ment agencies, larger budgets for VA hospitals and medical programs, increased subsistence for Vietnam veterans in school or training and continuously safeguarding the rights and benefits of older veterans are among VFW achievements this year. The VFW Legislative Service team in Washington is rated the most effective in the nation ' s capital. AMERICANISM For nearly 200 years, America has stood as the symbol of liberty and justice, the bastion of freedom. One reason we have survived for as long as we have and that provides us with some hope of continuing, is the undying love of Flag and Country (known as Positive Americanism ) that seems to be an inherent part of most Ameri- cans. And, the VFW, through its sponsorship of many outstanding patriotic programs, is looked on as the Champion of Positive Americanism . COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES The VFW has earned the reputation of being the Nation ' s No. 1 Community Service Leader. Communities across the country have learned first-hand of the many selfless services per- formed by VFW Posts day in and day out to make this nation a better place for all to live. YOUTH ACTIVITIES VFW youth programs provide the foundation for building tomorrow ' s leadership team today. LITE A BIKE The VFW assists in safe-guarding the lives of our nation ' s youth, by applying reflective tape to bicycles. More than 22 million bikes have been taped by VFW and Ladies Auxiliary units. SAFETY The VFW conducts the exclusive Drive to Sur- vive program to teach good drivers to be BETTER DRIVERS, and how to stay alive by driving defensively. LAW ENFORCEMENT The VFW strongly supports and recognizes Law Enforcement Agencies, Officers ' , and Citi- zens who foster and maintain law and order. ENVIRONMENTAL For years the VFW concern for God Flag, and Country has also included projects an6 programs of benefit to the environment. VETERANS SERVICE All VFW Posts have qualified service officers who, together with full-time VFW service staffs at our Washington Office and in each state, pro- vide effective representation for all veterans, their dependents, and survivors in initiating and processing their claims for benefits. VOICE OF DEMOCRACY The VFW ' s fastest growing program. A broad- cast scriptwriting program giving high school students the opportunity to speak up for freedom and democracy. Last year nearly 500,000 stu- dents from over 7,500 schools participated. The total value of scholarships and other awards, provided by VFW units, amounts to more than $500,000.00 annually. NATIONAL SECURITY The VFW maintains the lead among national organizations as a prime motivating influence to keep America strong and free. BUDDY POPPY SALES More than a million and a half dollars is raised each year through the sale of Buddy Poppies- all of the proceeds are restricted for the welfare and rehabilitation of veterans. SONS OF THE VFW The VFW ' s No. 1 youth program for 8-18 year old boys whose fathers and grandfathers are eligible for membership in the VFW provides opportunities for participation in a wide range of organized and nationally sponsored youth activities such as Youth Bowling, Junior Rifle, Scouting, Teen-er and Youth Baseball and Junior Musical Units, and Drill Teams. LOYALTY DAY Primarily because of the efforts of the VFW the U.S. Congress, in 1958, designated May 1st of each year as Loyalty Day. It is fitting that this nation have one day in e ch year when Americans may pause and bear witness to their own personal loyalty to the United States.
