OUR 200TH ANNIVERSARY AS A FREE NATION A TIME OF REFLECTION . . . A TIME OF SEEKING NEW HORIZONS . . . The 1975-76 school year will be remembered by all of us as the year of projects - projects designed to help us take a deep and thoughtful look at our 200 -year heritage. Our observance of the Bicentennial accented the history of America through student presentations of the morning Bicentennial Minute and through a featured Two Hundred Years Later column in the Gold ' n Black. Choir and band concerts presented stirring music with an emphasis on patriotism, and bulletin board displays provided a history lesson in red, white, and blue. SHS Thespians even added a touch of humor to our year-long ' birthday party ' with their choice of a spring play, ' George Washington Slept Here. ' A Bicentennial Ground Beauti- fication Committee planted flowers and trees that flourished in the 13 colonies, and the ' Betsy Rosses ' of the Home Economics Club made a Bennington ' 76 flag. As this book goes into print that flag still waves proudly in front of our building . Tl)e deeper purpose of all of the work was , of course , an attempt to take the best of our past and weave it into guidelines for a better tomorrow . The 1976 SHAWANO is proudly dedicated to the pride of our past and the hope of our future. It is dedi- cated , too , to Americans of years gone by and years yet to come whose courage once did and must always manifest itself in action, example, and ultimate accomplishment. In short , this book is dedicated to the greatest democracy the world has ever known . . . America .

New Additions to Building Dedicated • IM W-? I ' in December On December 7 a Dedication Ceremony and Open House introduced community residents to Shawnee ' s building additions of new library and classroom wing, new gymnasium and music wing, and expanded industrial arts and business wing. A Bicentennial theme provided the background for the impressive occasion, and guests witnessed a Revolutionary War soldier (Mr. Jay Eben) fire a musket in the new gym to initiate the program . Following the Dedication Program, guided tours of the building allowed visitors not only to see the new Shawnee but also to hear explanations of the new curriculum of semester elective courses in English and Social Studies. Expanded course offerings in all departments are expected to be completed within the next two years . 19
