And with the living remains the memory of the man , . . The memory of the man whose enthusiasm for life was projected into the lives of the American people . . . The memory of the man whose l ife was spent in complete dedication to his country; then, in a single moment, that life was taken from him . , It is to the memory of this man, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, that we dedicate this yearbook. 1 4r 4V j H I ' j. 1 1  i f xn ' ' P WlT l fW itf:i The colors of another school year are now the pages of a book already written. The colors blend to form pictures as words combine to form the chapters of a book; each tells a story of its own. In order to understand the true meaning of a picture, we must be able to analyze the things we see. If we skim through a book, we will probably touch only the surface. In the same way, if we merely look at a picture with no intention of deeper study, we may miss the meaning completely. A picture is more than just the combination of colors. It -is a representation of thoughts, of memories, of many things. In our case, the pictures represent the different phases of school life. To the chemistry student, this picture may bring back both good and bad memories. However, it is more than just a reminiscence over broken test tubes — it tells a story of youth at work in the laboratory and in the classroom. We see a generation of young people who have been handed such a complex world that education is no longer a privilege, but a necessity. The story of our Shawnee choir is one of deep pride in accomplishment. Yet this is just one outstanding example of the story this picture tells. A choir blends its voices to produce harmony — an orchestra combines the tones of the various instruments to give us enjoyable music — even the eleven men of a football team executing a play with precision can be used as an illustration this story. In all three cases, the talents of in- dividual students were combined with the talents of others and harmony was the product. The application of this story goes farther than the high school years. It teaches us a very important lesson. While the importance of the individual can never be over- emphasized, the ability to function harmoniously with others may mean the difference between success and failure. Now it is night, and the color is gone. It is as though the school were resting. The cheering crowds and the poundings of the basketball have been silent for hours. The gym is empty. The peaceful quiet of the halls waits for tomorrow and the activities of another school day. The halls of the school suddenly come to life as the morning bell sends the student to his first class. As he approaches his destination, the satisfaction of homework well- done or the uncertainty of unpreparedness may fill his mind — or is the thought of tonight ' s dance his main interest at the moment? i|:| i::i1 ill iJlll sii: ' !! I Education comes in many forms. Text books don ' t ha e to be the learning. A school that is concerned solely with the classroom aspect depriving its students of a great deal. These scenes, these colors, these pictures are now records of the past. Our year was much Hke years before, and the years to follow will be much the same. Yet to those who played the part, perhaps for the last time, this story was more than just another year. It was an experience that will be long remembered. 12 )i ' J f f ' •1 rf• •s A ■ gg| i5fM ?jf? «WI P«i Jacu L [ ' ano Jtominis iraiion ' - .- i. i; BOARD OF EDUCATION SEATED: Mr. A. C. Cjowara S7roine It is fitting that this yearbook be dedicated to the heritage of the past and the promise of the future. In this country of many freedoms each student has the opportunity to look back to what he has accompHshed during his high school career and to look forward to what he hopes to achieve in his lifetime. It is his inherent right and responsibility to pledge himself to fulfill the promise of citizenship. This promise of the future was personified by John Fitzgerald Kennedy during his brief span as President. His tragic and untimely death need not change the ideals for which he stood nor change the goals of democracy which he sought. Mr. Kennedy fervently believed in the dignity of man regardless of race, color or creed. He would ask no greater memorial than the dedication of the young people of America to fulfill this dream of equality. E. M. Irvine Principal 15 MRS. JEAN HILES Wittenberg University B.Sci. in Ed. ' Now what do you like? s-s-s-sh! 27 jKrs. J auJine mu In every school there are many people who help and guide the student who has a problem, whether it be large or small. At Shawnee Mrs. Pauline Athy is a person who puts the welfare of the students first. Mrs. Athy is always available with a warm smile and an encouraging word for any student who seeks her help. She has been the school secretary for six years, but typing reports and keeping books do not represent the full extent of her duties. One may find her doing anything from nursing a bloody finger to counting votes. A day ' s work for Mrs. Athy is much too long to be written here; it often includes many hours after the 3:32 bell, time spent at school programs and other activities. We wish, in one way, to thank her for what she has done for all of us. To do this, we dedicate this page as a special recognition to an invaluable friend. 28 Siuoeni Council SEATED: Bonnie Smith, Secretary; Phil Swartzbaugh, President; Dave Duffey, Vice-President; Dixie Kellar, Treasurer; Ginny Schanher, News Reporter STANDING: Jessie Grubb, Judy McKinnon, Bob Burdick, Barb Rollins, John McGillivray, Phil Nicklas, Tom Taylor, Don Athy, Anne Nissley, Beverly Spencer, Eugene Wells, Jane Gruenebaum, Dave Anon, Suzy Fogarty, Doug Daye The Student Council charters all clubs at Shawnee, provides student participation in all activities, and voices the opinions of the student body on any matter pertaining to them. Yet the future to which this story has been dedicated remains to offer its challenge. This challenge will be much like the construction of a mighty skyscraper. The blueprint must be carefully drawn up far in advance. A very firm foundation must be laid in order to successfully support the entire building. This foundation must be so strong that no matter how high and far-reaching our ultimate goal might become, our plan will never stray from the original model. John Kennedy was an architect of this structure. His dreams are now taking shape in the form of blueprints, but the responsibility for building these dreams into reality, the responsibility for fulfilling the challenge of the future lies in the hands of the young men and women of today. In time the construction techniques may change. The building materials may vary. But in the end, our goal must remain the same; the chal- lenge must be met. • vt j ' t. ; jMiAi |!
