Ilnsvrtz Nlr. l.appin as hcl appvarfwl in 1027 l,lulina.l Q 0 The expanding high school population over the past three decades not only has brought about extensive changes in the physical plant, but also has been the means of expanding and enriching the curriculum of our school. From a beginning faculty of seven teachers and an offering of twenty-five different subjects we have now developed to the point where we are able to include sixty-one different courses with a high school faculty of thirty. This lends suffi- cient variety to our course of study so that every student should be able to pursue his vocational interest as well as to develop his native talent. Nowhere is the growth of Shawnee School more manifest than in its extra-class activities, with the many and diversified student organizations that now exist. From a meager handful of students en- rolled in five organizations in 1926, thirty years of growth now shows a combined enrollment of 1154- students in twenty-five groups. These figures do not include the many boys engaged in the full sports program offered to Shawnee students. While the specific goals of each club may vary, the over- all aims still remain the same: to provide an opportunity for every student to take part in prop- erly supervised extra-class activities each according to his interests, his needs and his ability to benefit. As our growth continues, we are ever mindful of the responsibility of adjusting and converting our total resources and educational programs to the needs of our times. O. C. DORIS BRACKNEY Secretary to Mrs. Earl Shawnee Elementary School has de- veloped from one class per grade to five classes per grade. This has been due in large part to the blending of urban and rural into a suburban district. Methods of learning have changed. The spreading of new knowledge has included not only schools, churches and press but radio, television, public for- ums and discussions. Our pupils are not satisfied with as- signments from one book, but search for information from many sources. Learning is now an active process of experiencing. Shawnee, surpassed by no other school, has accepted the better ways of learning, has demanded high standards of education and training for teachers, and has provided adequate facilities for a diversified education. The juniors, as a class, are well equipped to make this climb. They have experiences of electing class and organization officers, participating in sports and music, producing the class play, and participa- tion in many extracurricular activities. Lady, Be Good, one of the best plays produced by juniors, was a great success. They have worked hard with the idea of present- ing an enjoyable prom, one of the steps in the flight. The club consists of all those in school who are taking or have ever taken Spanish. Last fall thev began their social functions with a hayride. Next came the initiation and then the Christmas party. They also enjoyed numerous other parties during the year. One thing that proved to be a lot of fun for the members was writing to their Latin Ameri- can neighbors and finding out many interesting facts about them, thus making Spanish study more realistic.
