PURPOSES FOR A SCHOOL Two of the prime purposes of any public high school are: first, to prepare the youth to earn a living, and, second, to mold their attitudes and character so that they know how to livei' a living. Shawnee High School is always trying to improve on these two lines of endeavor. Our school is growing very rapidly in members, but we should grow not only in physical size, but also in our services to boys and girls. We aim to enlarge our facilities for guidance to help direct each stu- dent into agreeable and usable channels of living. We aim to work more visual education into our courses of study. We aim to improve steadily the moral char- acter and the civic outlook of our students in general. Quantity is all right, but we feel that THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR QUALITY. I C G LAPPIN BA SPIRIT OF FRIENDLINESS As we view Shawnee School, We find there are many things to which we can point with pride. One item, however, so representative of the spirit of the school, may not be apparent at first glance. I refer to the traditional friendliness that exists in the many phases of our community-school life. Since the school started, there has been a constant growth in community interest and participation in its total program. Students, teachers and parents work together in a spirit of mutual respect and co- operation to accomplish that which is best for the entire school effort. FRIENDLINESS IS THE HEART OF SHAWNEE SPIRIT. OCT gdwtdgdffdfz ' BOARD OF EDUCATION Fred Bunke, Carl Settlemire, Presidentg Paul Lytle, Clerkg W. E. Williams, Horace Shock, Vice President. Opening the bids for the new high school is typical of the tasks that fall to our school board. The rapidly increasing enrollment of our school demands increased facilities. Shawnee owes much I to these men for giving so unsparingly of their time and effort to meet these demands. Mr. Knecht is always on hand to hear excuses of those-who didn't quite make it to class before the bell rang. That ex- cuse better be good. mrswmmw , iffy' This is a familiar scene at the lockers after the busses arrive in the morning. Each locker is shared by two stu- dents and is used as a storage place for books and coats. The school clinic takes care of casualties around school 5 E and cases of illness. Mrs. Gallup is ready for any emer- ig 2 gency. X if The new high school snack bar is a great help in handling the eating problem at noon. Feeding 1,100 people in 116 hours is quite a task. There are few periods during the day that all stu- dents with a study period may be seated in the main study hall. From one to three overflow study rooms are also filled. Students moving through the halls between classes often find the way blocked by congestion at various spots-especially in front of the main bulletin board. The day ends. Twenty-one busses leave the school filled with youngsters to return them to their homes. One bus makes two trips. .Q Xb Q fezifk V ,,,...,, 2 A vi? gif - . if M., .Q 2b9'fm . -W wa 1 ,Ez QW sis K5 ai 932537, 5,5 ,W egg: s.s?f'1-ww . was wwf . It marked the parting of a group, active in all organizations, both social and scholastic. The class of '55 were proud of their achievements in these fields: music, Y-Teens, Hi-Y, ournalistic publications, scholarship programs, sports, and dramatics. They felt that in these endeavors they partially prepared themselves to larger and more important tasks of the future. meet the Page sponsored by SHAWNEE P.T.A. Looking forward to presenting the traditional prom for the seniors, the class undertook several money making projects. Among these was the class play, Hob- goblin House,', which not only was well received by the audience, but was Aa financial success. During their school career, this class furnished two carnival queens: Jane Derbyshire, freshman, and Carole Rumbaugh, junior. They have also added greatly to the different sports teams and music groups. Page sponsored by SHAWNEE P.T.A. The sky's the limitv was the theme of this year's Y-Teens. To grow as a person in the knowledge and love of God constituted one of the goals. The club's programs were planned with this in mind. First activities included a membership drive, which proved very successful. The group has over one hundred and fifty members. The girls joined in an impressive recognition service, learning the purpose of the organization. Y-Teens and their dates celebrated the Christmas season at the Mistletoe Twirl, one of several social events sponsored by the organization. To help the Y.W.C.A. finance world-wide projects the Y-Teens took part in the celebration of the Y.W.C.A. Centennial. The squad, which was built around fifteen returning lettermen, had the true winning spirit from the first day of practice, way back on that hot, humid August 20th, to that cold, bleak night of November 12th, when our mighty Indians romped over Columbus Grove. In the opening game Shawnee defeated Kenton and soundly trounced Spencerville in the first road game. The first loss of the season was dealt out at Van Wert in a hard-fought game. The Indians easily won over St. Marys and were tied for second place in the Western Buckeye League until a Thursday night disaster when Wapakoneta Blume defeated our Shawnee eleven. Shawnee won the rest of the games, including a cold, muddy Homecoming, to finish third in their second year in the rugged Western Buckeye League. parked by twenty-four lettermf FRED BOWERSOCK End GENE MAUK En TOM SETTLEMIRE End x . Although they almost always took the floor with a height disadvantage, they made up for it in aggressiveness and spirit. With a squad containing four lettermen, Ted Stombaugh, Neil Riffle, Terry Shackelford, and Gene Mauk, the lndians finished the season with a 6-ll mark. However, throughout the season the line-up was dotted with sophomores and juniors, and with this in mind, we look toward the future. Our cheerleaders faithfully attended Shawnee's football and basketball games, lead- I ing cheers to inspire our teams to do their best. None of the cheerleaders were amateurs. Head cheerleader, Sue Allion, was a varsity cheerleader for three years and Char- lotte Vogelgesang, a veteran yell-leader from Lima South. Jane Derbyshire and Janice Redmond had both been junior high cheerleaders. The chief and squaw lent an Indian atmosphere to our sports events. JUNIOR HIGH CHEERLEADERS Beverly Hall, Jeanne McConnell, Barbara Hall, Judy Kelly, head cheerleader. Junior high and freshman games were spurred on by these peppy girls.
