The images seen in a kaleidoscope are 'as unpredictable as our days spent in school have been, yet we hope that in this, our Yearbook, the pieces of the pattern may at last fall into symmetry and reveal the over-all design. The kaleidoscope works in such a way that several bits of colored glass are reflected over and over again until the complete design is constructed. Just as the glass is the basis of the charm of the kaleidoscope, we decided that a basic theme to work with brings continuity into the apparently un- related items that make up a Yearbook. With this view in mind, we, the editors, chose to build our Annals around the Gay Nineties. The sharp contrasts of the period, its rapidly developing scientific and mechanical developments, the bewildering unrelated details of its architecture and its fashions, the extravagance of its social life and its foods, the sentimentality of its plays, the panic against the gold rush, all these continually changing forms suggested to us an appropriate symbolism for use in our Annals . The theme is carried out in the art, literature, and captions of this book. Most of the captions are titles of songs popular during the era of the Nine- ties or quotations from the libretto of Gilbert and Sullivan operas. Now, as you, the reader, turn the pages of this book, you will see the many, many patterns that have been formed inside the kaleidoscope of our school life. Although the designs are not all soft shades or bold ones, they will, we hope, blend at last into what will be the completed picture. STELLA R1-:NI-'Ro I J Kaleidoscope PAGE TWO
