The images seen in a kaleidoscope are 'as unpredictable as our days spent in school have been, yet we hope that in this, our Yearbook, the pieces of the pattern may at last fall into symmetry and reveal the over-all design. The kaleidoscope works in such a way that several bits of colored glass are reflected over and over again until the complete design is constructed. Just as the glass is the basis of the charm of the kaleidoscope, we decided that a basic theme to work with brings continuity into the apparently un- related items that make up a Yearbook. With this view in mind, we, the editors, chose to build our Annals around the Gay Nineties. The sharp contrasts of the period, its rapidly developing scientific and mechanical developments, the bewildering unrelated details of its architecture and its fashions, the extravagance of its social life and its foods, the sentimentality of its plays, the panic against the gold rush, all these continually changing forms suggested to us an appropriate symbolism for use in our Annals . The theme is carried out in the art, literature, and captions of this book. Most of the captions are titles of songs popular during the era of the Nine- ties or quotations from the libretto of Gilbert and Sullivan operas. Now, as you, the reader, turn the pages of this book, you will see the many, many patterns that have been formed inside the kaleidoscope of our school life. Although the designs are not all soft shades or bold ones, they will, we hope, blend at last into what will be the completed picture. A d viser Family Album PAGE SEVEN CASEY'S CAREER Besies the publicized strikeout, Casey and his bat had many more experiences that were not so well known by the public. The follow- ing is a brief account of these events. Casey joined the team in September, 1950. He entered the stadium at 41st and Herman Streets with his mind in a state of utter con- fusion, awed at the vastness of the place and the number of people that it held. At the first meeting Casey and his team mates got some in- itial instructions from the owner of the club, Mr. Clem, and assistant, Miss Kornfeld. Casey was also handed a rule book named the Mudville Counsellor . In order to make the squad, all the players had to know the rules, regulations, and policies of the team. Aft- er a few more instruc- .'.L'... tions, Casey was dismissed from the meeting, and a good thing, too, for his confusion had reached its peak. The first year was really hard work, but Casey kept on pluggin' away. After six weeks of hard labor, the league officials and President gave Casey a report of his progress. His results were passing! Be- cause of his hard work during the rest of the season, the team asked Casey to return for a second year. The next season went very smoothly until the President and the league officials called Casey in for a conference about his plans aft- er he graduated from the league. It was ex- plained to Casey that he had a long life in front of him, and he must do some research on future vocations. Casey spent several days off the diamond and in the library reading and writing about prospective jobs for old age . The league officers and umpires read over the work very carefully. Casey and most of his team mates survived the ordeal, and continued on with their career. Casey also had to read several more books during his second season in order to enlarge his know- ledge on the tricks of the trade . The year progressed, and Casey looked longingly for next season, when he would be a Senior on lf the squad. On the last day of the season Casey -Q got to occupy the choice f X seats in the dugout, as the Seniors had left for a new and faster league. Casey and his team mates were tops now, next year the baseballs were going to fly! This was the big year. The President called a meeting, and the team was organized. The players bought their of- ficial team ringsg was Casey proud! The club also elected a captain, Lee Sanders, and his assistant, Gene Mueller, Veda Stayer was chosen to take notes for the club-house meetings, and George Bartels was given the job of taking care of the players' extra money. Charles Bickel played the piano when Barb- ara Tyree, Joan Krout, and Janet Cecil were leading the Mudville bandwagon. Tommy Casper had to keep order in the Club house. The team also elected their new manager, Mrs. Elizabeth Ford. Mudville had some very grave finincial problems, and the team offi- cials got together to try and solve them. Many extra activities besides the game were planned to raise money. Some of the occasions did not draw many people, but the team did come out ahead. At last came the final World Series game June 10. In brand-new uniforms, before a flower-decked stadium, Casey and his team performed their best, accompanied by thund- ering applause they were promoted to a big- ger and faster league. This light but twinkles, twinkles, and is gone. Faint reminiscences one by one ariseg The life we shared with others now is gone-gone forever. What chances we have lost along this trail, What wrong turns have we chosen, Leading to grief, Only to find the magic Try-again Waiting at the next bendg Around the nearest corner is the future, The mystery of what is yet to come. Watch for the beam of long past days to reappearg It comes and goes, is always here, But yet beyond our reach. Along this road of Life there grows a tree Which yields all bitter fruitsg Regret is plentifulg we eat of it often, And wonder why our life is what it is. We wonder why we wrought the chains that bind us now When just by word or act we could have stayed The evergrowing links. The gleam of memory strikes our fancy then, as it reveals the happy times Such joyous times could we but live again! But, no, our goal lies forwardg no turning back, Just wistful sighs at errors long forgotten, Just pangs of deep regret that hold no art To efface the pastg Just a ray of memory lights the corners of each heart, And then is goneg And yet-not wholly gone, For it will be recalled in future days. Here she comes on the tiny feet of Joan Kraut. You can't miss the petite figure of Michael Ehret with the graceful carriage of Janet Cecil, especially when she is sporting Barbara Tyree's colorful clothes. The black curly hair of Shirley Rehm flatters the milk white skin of Yvonne Norman and sets off Emma Jean Goff's expressive eyes, framed by Sandra Schmidt's long curling eye lashes and Roselyn Snyder's eyebrows. Barbara Lampton's lovely smile has a hint of Dorothy Nichols' pleasantness. Treva Allis' ruby-red lips under Dottie Broughton's saucy nose compliment the pearly teeth of Rita McGinity above Pat Bratcher's soft chin. Our Belle, with Mary Jane Schultz's dimples, greets us with the musical voice of Mary Ann Rueff. The sweet air of Carol Comer combined with Isabelle Rearden's intellect, Linda Davis' leadership, Charlotte Yates sewing and Nancy Smith's cooking ability, and Mary Jo Hargis' enthusiasm reflects Barbara Moyer's friendliness. Stella Renfro's imagination is touched by Barbara Clay's sense of humor and Merrylen Wesley's laughter with the sparkle of Betty Wittekind. Possessing Joyce Brooks' agility on the ivories, the skill in pallet and paint of Eloise Moore and Martha Draughon, plus the athletic inclination of Roberta Eckmann, our charmer floats by on the dancing feet of Leah Ray Hanna waving Beverly Cecil's tapering fingers. As our Belle of 1890 fades into the distance, she appears to have m a ny of the characteristics of Virginia Merideth, Miss Senior. PAGE FIFTY-SIX Now here comes our gay blade. Judging by the rate of Bob McCormick's walk on Ralph Riggs' small feet, our Beau Brummel must be trying to catch up with our previous encounter. Charles Foreman's distinctive clothes on Dewey Bratcher's strong physique reflect the versatility of George McAleese. Waving Leo Borowick's firm hand our fine fellow greets us in the baritone voice of Freddie Pletcher. Jimmy Holland's curly hair looks nice against Ed Perley's fresh complexion while Houston Tucker's eye brows and Larry Spitzer's eye lashes frame the charm of Mickey Brunson reflected in Gene Mueller's blue eyes. Bob Minton's classic nose and Richard Dowdell's square chin accent Wade Cox's flash- ing white teeth and Bill Ouzts' deep dimples. Bob Florence's warm grin reflects the humor of Ed Holloway, and when he laughs, it's Jerry Summerfield's melodious laughter which issues forth. With the patience of Charlie Atcher, the zeal of George Bartels, and the imagination of Don Read, our guy is as friendly as Alvin Burnett. Possessing the athletic skills of Alan Eckerle, the art ability of Vivian Allen, and musi- cal genius of Charles Bickel and Joe Anderson, Beau is a science brain like Ralph Baker. By popular vote possessing all the qualities, Lee Sanders finally, on the dancing feet of Warren Prewitt, catches up with Miss Senior. They make a fine looking couple, don't they? B , Ja., 4, as .
