The Indians preserved Their lore by singing songs and Telling Tales ThaT were carried down Through The years. We, Too, have Tried To preserve our school-day memories by collecTing Them in This book, which we hope will become a prized possession oT everyone who reads iT. Long ago, when we were only liTTle papooses, we looked Torward To The day when we would become The mighTy warriors. Now ThaT Time is here, and soon we shall no longer live in This spacious wigwam. AT lasT, we shall become members oT The larger Tribe. WiTh a Teeling oT sadness in our hearTs, we are leaving our Trail behind us and heading Tor The big beyond. Many Times, as we Travel new Trails, we shall pause To Turn The pages oT This book, and remember our happiesT days. Margie Dover lVlarTha Holloway VVhence These sTories ONWARD, SHAWNEE Unumrl. Silently and softly night breaks into day, Revealing the golden glimmer of a September morning, A smoke cloud arises, Disclosing meek little papooses, expectant but forlorn. , The Geat Chieftain his all-powerful favor had given, And commanded the brave and elder warriors By sumptuous feast and ceremonial rite To welcome these saplings with amity and peace. With harvest season over, and springtime drawing near, No longer fwith bewilderment trod we unfamiliar trai s But with quickened spirit and lightened heart Our paths we followed ever on. But waitl like ohantom with trailing gcwn, This vision fades, Suddenly-glowing anew, the embers illumin The dawning of another day. No longer stood we as strangers, outside the council fire, But Ioining the encircling throng we became as one: A chieftain now had we, with warriors to do her We planned our first tribal event: in the spring lt fell. We bartered maize and venison, of almost every- thing had we some, Maidens, princesses, and warriors brave and strong Came and danced, and thus we procured the needed wampum. Once again the smoke rises over a new horizon, Showing princesses of higher rank, With supreme grace and spirited hearts, we made our way Over paths now our own. As the earth is blanketed again in green, we gather round the fire: This time not with trepidations, but with saddened ioy, peaceful serene, We silently pass the pipe of peace: our tribal rites complete: This final vision fades away, never again to be 5880. The coals stfll are faintly aglow, And into the caverns of the sky A willcwy shadow of a fire once brgiht Winds, carrying hopes and desires, still to be fulfilled. biddlI19J Donna Payne Our counc.l naw chosen: our place was won. Martha Green MOLDERS OF CLAY As we entered the Great Tepee, we were met by the Council which had prepared a gay feast in our honor. Perhaps we were a little fearful as we awaited the instructions for molding our pottery, but already visions of design were beginning to shape themselves in our minds. Later in the year, we began to be a part of the Council, when we appointed our permanent leadcrs, Princesses Ann Carr Hill and Betty Holtzclaw, ioined later by Princesses Martha Jane Halloway and Betty Hardy. It did not seem many moons before we assembled to create the first design in our pattern, election of junior Officers. Among other plans guided by this new group fBetty Holtzclaw, President, Joy Raymer, Vice President, Aneda Hornback, Secretary, and Betty Hardy, Treasurerb was the Junior Carnival in which the entire tribe helped. By the spirit of Nakoma, Time, on its moccasined feet, crept by quickly! Suddenly wc found ourselves giving skits to advertise The Charm School . and selling candy. Another pow-wow, and we elected our high chiefs, joan Staebler, President, joy Raymer, Vice Presi- dent, Edith Hudson, Secretary, and Lillie Pleasant, Treasurer. Our earthen vessels, on the verge of completion, were precious to us. Each tiny dish with each little design had been shaped by patient hands. And now, we, the tribal members, take a last look at the valley behind us and press forward to lofty mountains before us. There is only a short wait for the final realization of our dreams - our golden rings - the senior play - the most highly desired seats in the clearing - and most of all - the great day when we shall be given the sign of approval by the mighty chief, marking us young braves. Then our tribe must cease to work together, de- parting as individuals, rather than members of the tribe. each ever seeking the design that will mold her life in unknown lands. Facing West on trail of Larkwood. stood the large and spacious wig- wam, where there came a flock of maidens to acquire the ancient learn- ing. Some Brave Spirits came to meet them, whom Chief Spirit sent to warn them to beware, and not fall victim to the Spirit named Monda- min. Dressed he is in a green wrapper, on his head a golden tassel. 'Round his waist there hangs no scalp-lockg he has never won in battle. Thrice with him you'll have to struggle. Then the Wise Ones called a council to prepare the maids for battle. Soon the Spirit came before them from the land of Your Vocation , and at once began the battle, fierce and ha1'd, with deer-skin flyingg then at length they overcame him with their sharp-toothed pens and pencils. Wounded him but did not slay himg off he fled into the forest. Bragged and danced, they sang and studied, joyful ox er their great conquest. But from out the woods that autumn, coming from the land of Long Theme , once again he offered battle. Still unable to defeat them, ran again into the forest, where he lived throughout the winter. Skulking from the darksome hideout, when the spring sun's rays :first touched him, made he plans to snare the maidens, wise and bold, who did not fear him. Slyly slipping to the wig-warn, in the guise of VVitty-Humour, crept he up -beside a maiden, with a tongue as smooth as waterg told. to her an ancient legend, which she put into her essay. One by one in this same fashion made he victims of the maidens. As he conquered each new victim, stronger grew he from the battle, and the unprotected maidens never knew they had been conquered.
