Regular Rhythm A brand new metronome graced the offt e shelf along wtth ftve others showtng vartous stages of wear and tear For two weeks these tempo regulators awatted the ltfttng of the polto ban before they could begtn tell1ng thetr ttmes At last however the eptdemtc was over and ltttle chtldren were able to run about agatn Gatly tosstng off the cover of thetr shtny new metronome and setttng the wetght for htgh speed 250 Engltsh llls assembled tn the vast audttortum of Shawnee Htgh School The ttme t 1935 the day September and sultry A short welcome by Mr Clem a ftrst heartng of Onward Shawnee and the class of 1938 was estab ltshed Several hundred strange faces and a new butldtng plan for many made the ftrst few weeks a Pertod of Adjustment Mtss Kornfeld tnformed the class that tt was the btggest ever to attend Shawnee and she hoped would prove the best Amtd ct flurry of Shtrt Sleeves the fall term ended Engltsh 1Vsl To thtnk that at last one knew more than somebody! By now the metronome had counted off a year Three months of laztng tn the sun and the pace setter had rested sufftctently to beat t1me for another year A somewhat smaller number of the Class of 1938 reuntted tn the audttortum whtch dtd not seem so vast now Ballots flew thtck and fast thts term determtn tng the electton of Mtss Wheeler class advtser class offtcers and new Executtve Board members Once tn a Ltfettme many members of the class saw and hoped they mtght play tn the next years drama December 25 ts always stgntftcant but to the Engltsh V s Decem ber 4 of that year was nearly as tmportant On that day the Engltsh V Vodvtl Show packed the school audttortum and cleared more than S160 Another electron made Rose Marttn Student Counctl Prestdent and lvftldred Ptpes Vtce Prestdent Thus ended the term the metronome had ttcked agatn Swtsh swtsh the sound of water rtstng boats navtgattng scrub brushes at work and Shawnee 1-ltgh School gathered up tts metronomes and went for a v1s1t to Grandmas and other outlytng terrttory The famous Class of 1938 was lucky No hour s rtde to the 1-ltghlands no V Froltc mtssed no Engltsh V111 term tn a strange butldtng for the class had reached the status of Engltsh VI All dtgntty of that posttton or any other was cast astde the day smoke poured from Gtrls Htgh and the host who had been so gractous seemed to force even her guests out tnto the ratn The company was tnvtted to return the next day however and spent the rematnder of the term under the roof of L G H S Summer at last the metronome back on the shelf and thoughts of betng sentors next fall occupted the class But summers must end and metronomes run thetr courses Back to a shtny poltshed butldtng on whose shtny poltshed floors many dtgntfted sentors lost the balance tt had taken years ttwol to acqutre Before tt seemed posstble rehearsals ttcket sales adver ttstng and countless other tasks made of ftve hecttc exctttng weeks Balmy Days Much was realtzed from thts performance tncludtng some S500 whtch was added to the general fund New offtcers and school rtngs were acqutred thts term We mtght add almost as many offtcers as rtngs At long last the Class of 1938 realtzed tts fondest hopes Engltsh V111 sl The rtght to put an 8 on homework and stt tn the coveted seats tn assembly all had become a realtty But strangely enough although the exalted posttton ttself had come the expected feeltng of adulthood dtd not followl A lot of ground had been covered stnce the metronome was placed on the offtce shelf but the 250 Engltsh llls had not become new people at all only a ltttle older and wtser verstons of themselves The annual classday boatrtde and plans for graduatton made thts semester pass unusually raptdly Perhaps the happtest days of school ltfe are those last busy exctttng ones ttnged wtth regret No ttme ts anttctpated so longtngly no ttme ts more thrtlltng as tt unfolds no ttme ts remembered more fondly than those last days of planntng and hoptng The cover ts placed very gently on the worn old metronome thts ttme for tt has counted tts last New ttme markers wtll take tts place but can any be better loved or longer remembered?
