Suddenly in a bevy of noise and confusion the stage crew burst upon the stage. The props, repre- senting the walls of Shawnee High School, literally shook with the din. After all the noise and confusion had subsided, the dazed members of the cast and their un- derstudies realized that these were the members of the stage crew. They were introduced to William Lowery, class presi- dent, and his assistants: Jimmy Wheeler, vice-president, Loyce Hunter, secretary, and Sherry Kay Phillips, treasurer. The supervisors were Pauline Ingram, Deward Jameson, and Charles Martin. The football players, Donald Higgins, William Lowery, and Bill Thomas, were lugging props around. Giving them her moral support was Katherine Cowen, foot- ball attendant. Darrel Tucker and William Lowery were basketball boys. Their most loyal supporter was Javonna Mooney, basket- ball attendant. The proud members of the stage crew who possessed some talent and were members of the cast of the Student Coun- cil play were Sharon Haddock, Lee Arden Surber, and Bill Oden. Leading cheers through the year were Janice Alexander and Guy McGregor. Sophomore members of the boys' tennis team were Dale Anderson, Charles Low- ery, and Bill Moran. Sophomore drum majorette was Bobbye Van Antwerp. When the curtain was drawn, all agreed that the sophomores had done their part in making the play a success. They cer- tainly had lived up to their motto: F or- ward ever, backward never. 1 .1 5 1 ' K. x if 1 In . .+, I ' J V' ,la f. Q Lf: -1- It - i V X i f . if, -f - fq,:1f,m3 f LM ,. All the understudies Qjuniorsj of the cast CSeniorsj were suffering from stage fright when thoughts of assuming leading roles in next year's third act raced through their minds. Leaders of this organization were Dick Earnest, president, Bob Sager, vice-president, Jann Guest, secretaryg and Mark Bolling, treas- urer. Miss Beryl Korb and Mrs. Dana Hendon were chosen sponsors and the year was off with flying colors. Several starting positions on the powerful Wolves' football team were held by Juniors. This group included Ronnie Morris, Dick Ear- nest, Clarence Payne, James Hall, Bob Sager, Charles Beck, Bill Dutton, and Eddie Ribbeck. Near the close of the campaign, Morris, as a result of his stellar performances, was voted into the all-district backfield. The boys were in- spired to still higher goals when Norma Reeves made her appearance as Junior Class football attendant. Mary Sue Chittum and Jann Guest gave her a close race for the distinction. Patsy Tennyson out-polled Nancy Porter and Jann Guest for the honor of representing the Junior Class at the annual basketball corona- tion. Ronnie Morris was leading scorer on the Wolves' state champion basketball team. Other Juniors seeing plenty of action were Bob Carey, James Hall, Dick Earnest, and James Buchanan. All through the sports' seasons Patsy Tennyson and Freeman Scarlett led the all- important cheering. About this time Dale Young, Eddie Rickey, Donna Schuyler, and Carole Davis began to win honors at speech meets and continued to do so throughout the year. -24... High school happenings were faithfully re- ported by Ruella Dockins in her News-Star column, the Merry-Go-Round. Holding important offices in the Student Council were Carole Davis, secretaryg and Glen McLaughlin, treasurer. Dick Earnest was elect- ed president of the Federation of Oklahoma High School Student Councils at the annual convention held in Norman. Emily English was chosen by the knightly young men of the Hi-Y to be their 1951-52 sweetheart. Patsy Raymer was runner-up for the honor. Patsy Tennyson and Bob Carey played lead- ing roles in the annual class play, We Shook the Family Tree, that was acclaimed by many spectators as one of the best ever given by Juniors. Other members of the cast were Free- man Scarlett, Bob Maynard, Ruella Dockins, Jann Guest, Donna Schuyler, Joann Newberry, Willene Smith, Eddie Rickey, Glenda Coppage, and Dickie Smith. Carole Davis was assistant director. The brawn of the class having been well- exploited, the brains were recognized as new Honor Society members were chosen. Junior members consisted of Ruella Dockins, Emily English, Patsy Tennyson, Jann Guest, Patty Sue Rich, Sylvia Payne, Irma Johnson, Glenn McLaughlin, Dick Earnest, Franklin Niles, Clarence Payne, Ronnie Morris, and Ellis Rae Harvey. At the close of a highly successful year the Juniors, having banished all stage fright, are now looking forward to the prominent place they have earned in the third and final act of the endless production of Shawnee Senior High School. ffff?Q5r V ' . . ,, .l. E IOR CLASS HI TORY It was three years ago that we were preparing to embark upon the great production of Shawnee Senior High School, when on March 27, 1948, our future stage came down in a fire that left us homeless for almost two years. The first act of our show, in our sophomore year, usually a term of meekly serving the upperclass- men, w'e found ourselves leading Junior High School. We elected Dick Liddell, presidentg L. T. West, vice- presidentg Nancy Kidd, secretary, and Beverly Kempf, treasurer. Rita Montgomery, football attendant, and Barbara Burrough, basketball attendant, were the royal- ty of our class. Our sponsors were J. G. Hill and Birdie Alley. In the second act, as juniors, we were moved to the campus of Oklahoma Baptist University where we were completely astounded by our temporary schoolhouse It was a busy year, with Russell Jones as our president, Bill Fleming, vice-president, Jean Young secretaryg and Nancy Kidd, treasurer. We were ably guided by Rita Huff and Beryl Korb. Barbara Morris was elected foot- ball and basketball attendant. Floyd Henson and Mary Truesdell were our representatives to the cheerleading group. The great honor of being Hi-Y sweetheart was bestowed upon Nancy Kidd. Martha Huffman, Juli- anne Hardin, Joanne Johnson, Noel Williams, Virgil Walker, Rita Montgomery, Ann Bamett, Roberta Viar, Nancy Kidd, Patricia Hill, Russell Jones, Pete Davis, Pat Dover, Faye Boykin were chosen for the National Honor Society. Hal King, Julianne Hardin, Patricia Hill, and Clara Michener were casted in the Student Council play, Life With Father. However, we were in our glory with our production, The Scarecrow Creeps. Members of the cast were Marilu Brovsm, Rus- sell Jones, Jack Rochelle, Harold Heath, Beverle Smalley, Floyd Henson, Ann McBride, Patricia Hill, Rennel McKerracher, Julianne Hardin, and Bill Flem- -54- ing. Rita Montgomery and Floyd Henson were the juniors selected to attend the Student Council Con- vention in Charleston. West Virginia. Three members of our class were elected to state offices in various or- ganizations. Jack Rochelle was elected state president of the Oklahoma Interscholastic Press Association. Joe Markham was state president of Phi Tau Alpha, Patricia Hill was made state secretary of the Hi-Y, Tri-Hi-Y convention in Oklahoma City. On February 4, 1950, open house was held for our new Shawnee High School. We moved into the building the following Monday. The year ended with the juniors in charge of the Junior-Senior Reception at the American Legion Hall and the Junior-Senior Prom at Teen Town. The next year in the linale we were the stars of the show. We had a new building and we were, at last, honored seniors. The officers were Rudy Cast, presi- dent, David Braungardt, vice-presidentg Ann McBride, secretary, and Jean Young, treasurer. Mary Truesdell was made football queen, Marilu Brown was crowned basketball queen. We were quite proud of Bernard Wilson for making the All-American and All-State foot- ball teams. High in our esteem also, is James Harbison, who made All-Star and All-State basketball teams. At- tending the Career Conference at Norman were Roberta Viar and Virgil Walker. Our greatest production, Heaven Can Wait, was given on April 6. Included in the cast were Patricia Hill, Jim LaClaire, Bill Higley, Jack Hohenstein, Faye Boykin. Judie Tucker, Clara Michener, Naomi Gaines, Betty Holliman, Dewey Loftis, David Braungardt, Eddie Lynam, Jo Ann Polk, jack Rochelle, Hal King, Noel Williams. and Bemard Wilson. The social event of the year, the Senior Prom, was held on May 195 the Junior-Senior Reception, staged by the juniors, was on May 23. TUDE T C0 CIL The Student Council began a very busy year under the leadership of the following oflicers: Rus- sell Jones, president, Tom Brown, vice-president, Carole Davis, secretary, Glen McLaughlin, treas- urerg Norman Hoover, parliamentarian, and Rita Montgomery, historian. The group was well spon- sored by Mr. Jack Neavill and Miss Mary Trinkle. Emily English, Kathrine Cowen, Marilu Brown, Carole Davis, Russell Jones, Floyd Henson, and Dick Earnest attended the convention of the Southern Association of Student Councils held Oc- tober 19, 20, and 21, in Oklahoma City. There, Shawnee was chosen delegate from West of the Mississippi to attend the convention of the Na- tional Association of Student Councils to be held near Boston, Massachusetts, in June of 1951. Shawnee was elected president of the Federa- tion of Oklahoma High School Student Councils at the annual convention held December 7, 8, and 9, at Norman. A large delegation attended and helped in the campaigning which resulted in an ..59. overwhelming majority of votes for Shawnee. Dick Earnest was later elected by the Council to fill the office. The Other Shepard was chosen as the annual Student Council play and was very well presented. Highly elaborate coronation ceremonies were held for the football and basketball queens. De- spite the freezing weather the football coronation was acclaimed by many authorities as the best football coronation of the 1950 season in the state of Oklahoma. The basketball ceremony was just as colorful. Other activities included conducting all school elections, revision of the constitution, and the be- ginning of a homecoming program that promises to develop into a great annual event. Beginning with the second semester, meetings were held on school time. With this convenience many things were accomplished and the Student Council recorded a very good year. The Student Council Play, The Other Shepherd, was presented on December 21 at Municipal Auditorium. The play under the direction of Jack Neavill had a Christmas theme and pictured the birth of Christ. The play had a cast of eleven students who were: Dewey Loftis, Noel Williams, Jack Hohenstein, Bill Oden, Sharon Haddock, Beverly Kempf, Arden Surber, Bill Higley, Mary Johnson, Clara Michen- er, Jean Young. The high school chorus also played a very important part. They provided the background music during the play and also entertainment during the intermission. We Shook the Family Tree was the hilarious three-act comedy pre- sented by the Junior Class at the Municipal Auditorium, February 8th, Patsy Tennyson had the feminine lead, Hildegarde Dolson, a slim sixteen-year-old girl whose main de- sire was to attend the prom. Complications set in when she found that her date was none other than Fred- die Shermer, the only boy in school who still wore knickers. The part of Freddie was played by Bob Carey. Others in the cast were: Freeman Scarlett, Bob Maynard, Ruella Dockins, Donna Schuyler, Joan Newberry, J ann Guest, Willene Smith, Eddie Rickey, Glenda Coppage, and Dickie Smith. The production under the direction of Mr. Jack Neavil, was a huge success. Carole Davis was as- sistant director, and Dick Earnest handled the business affairs. -70- 'Q SENIOR CLASS PLAY Heaven Can Wait, produced by the Senior Class, was given on April 6, 1951. A three-act comedy, the play centered around Joe Pendleton, a prizeiighter, played by Jim LaClaire, and Mr. Jordan, an angel, por- trayed by Bill Higley. Joe was killed in an airplane crash fifty years before his time to dieg it was Mr. Jor- dan's duty to replace Joe's lost body, enabling him to live out his time on earth. The result was a comical sit- uation, well presented, under the direction of jack Neavill. The cast included Patricia Hill, Jack Hohen- stein, Faye Boykin, Judie Tucker, Clara Michener, Naomi Gaines, Betty Holliman, Dewey Loftis, David Braun- gardt, Eddie Lynam, Jack Rochelle, Hal King, Noel Wil- liams, and Bernard Wilson. Jo Ann Polk was assistant director, Rudy Cast, class president. was in charge of business arrangements. A egis? Rlmfi? is First row: Roberta Viar, Willadean Watkins, Ann Shull, Charles Spangler.
