Swm Glen allmtwf In September, 1939, about three hundred fifty young hopefuls composed the Freshman Class of Shawnee High School. Although this class was inexperienced in the ways of sophis- ticated high school students, it was quite cap- able of holding its own, because of the able leadership of its officers: 'L President-Bruce Marts. Vice President-Joe Smith. Secretary-Jean Warren. Treasurer-Randall Braman. Sponsors-Mrs. Hazel Guttery and Don Hansen. After the class had established its reputa- tion of being a Sopihomore Class of some re- pute, and after that dazed and lost expression had changed to that of a man of the world, well-versed in high school customs, the class Was ready to settle down in earnest at the business of being Sophies. Its first achievement was the election of BETSY ANN EVANS as Sophomore Attend- ant to the Football Queen. Th-en the Sophomore Class, in order to as- sert itself, sponsored an assembly composed only of Sophomores. The assembly was well received by the high school, and was consid- ered one of the best assemblies of the year. Those taking part were: JAMES OWEN, BER- NICE AMEND, BET'I'YE CURRIN, ESMA WYANT, LOUETTA DUCKWORTH, JEAN WARREN, IDA ROBINSON, VERNA RUTH FORSTON, LORRAINE HOYLE, and a chorus consisting of Sophomore girls. Sponsors-Mrs. Hazel Guttery and Jolly Griggs. During the Commencement Week, the Soph- omores did their part by decorating for Bac- calaureate and Commencement. Thus did they safely complete their Sopho- more year with only a few minor bruises and breakdowns, as evidence of their strenuous and hectic year. Soon school was starting again, the foot- ball season began. This time the class chose as the girl best qualified to represent it, NOR- MA LEE RAPP, Junior Attendant to the Foot ball Queen. Wh-en the Christmas holidays were over, Miss PEGGY LUPER was chosen as Basketball Queen candidate and was attendant to the Basketball Queen at a beautiful coronation. The Junior Class then took pride in pre- senting the first class play of the year, a farce entitled Wedding Spells , by Jam-es F. Stone.
