S. in September, 1934,-they were given class ussignnient and lockers. Soon they met in the auditorium to elect officers and select u. qandidalze for football queen. 'rm-y were very young and innocent und some of them never thought that they might wln Llw contest. To lend the class Lu glorious heights of victory and ull that none other than Cornelius Dossey was chosen. Various other Sophies were elected Lo serve as vice-presimleut, secretary, und cheer leaders. History does not record their names bm undoubtedly they served their Class faithfully and fairly effectively. For football queen, or queens, twins were selected. Some of us muy recall them by hard thinking. They were the Wilcox Lwnns. Two very beautiful young ladies, known to all and sundry as Arlene and Larene. Ye optimistic und hopeful sophius worked long and hard to elect. the Twins as Queens, but their efforts were in vain. The chesty Juniors were as surprised as anyone when it was announced that they were triumphant, al- though they strove munfuily to conceal it.. Your lliswrian has no remembrance of any other historic happenings of importance that year. so we proceed to September, 1935. At that time they were enrolling for their Junior year. They strode majestically into S. H. S. Making little effort to conceal their scorn for the lowly sophomore, they eifected an uir of sophistication and worldly-wiseness. Thani yeur they learned of several changes. Home-room would begin at 10:30, immediately after second hour. Another change was the elixninuting of sixth hour. Whuiever disappointment was felt at the announcement that school would he one hour shorter an day, was mzmfully concealed. ilawing elected officers the year before, the lirst act of the Junior Class was to nominate a, football queen. Meeting' in the auditorium under the lczulership of our President, Dale Moore, the Class nominated Miss lietha. Cherry. Then the battle was on. The Class emerged from the fruy third best. Down but not totally out, the grim wutchword of the class wus: VVuit until next year. Then uzuuc football season. The Class cheered the Wolves in their gallant efforts to shove the pig-skin across the enemy goal line. Basketball season caune and went, again the old, old story of nominating u, candidate for queen. The results were the saunv, Let us say no more. Alas, 'Lis a. painful subject. Slowly the school yeau' drew to an close. The high and mighty Juniors were higher and mightier Seniors- eloul. Before leaving the Class held nn election. Miss Sadie Ann Parks Qdon't let the initials fool you, folks! wus elected lu hm-nd the Class for the coming year. Leroy Bond, innocent and unsuspecting, accepted the position uf Editor of the Cauldron. He little knew what he was getting into, poor fellow. Soon after the election school closed. Happy little feet pattered out the door, and childish voices were lifted in joy. No more school for three months. In St'llU.'llllll'l', 1936, the Class returned to the hallowed halls of S. H. S. for the last lap, Again the business of nominating u Queen. Grimly determined to Lriumph, the Class selected Miss Marjorie Norton for their can- didate. They worked long and hard Lsome of Lhemj. It puins ye Historian to say that the Juniors worked longer and harder. The campaign was hot and furious. ln its midst, EL young mam Qname supplied upon receipt of 50C in stamps or coinj conceived the idea of hiring za. public address system for campaign purposes. Said young man, by some uncanny mm-uns, persuaded various other Seniors that this was a good idea.. it might he mentioned :Lt this point that in their eagerness the Seniors neglected to inform their sponsors of their plan. The results of this neglect will soon be apparent. Then came the parade that was Lo advertise the first home game of the season and lo lll2ll'k the closing of the contest. Anyone fortunate enough to have seen said parade will recall one outstanding exhibit. Aforesaid exhibit was to cause a remarkable quantity of excitement after the parade. Suffice- il to say that the Seniors did what they were told not to do. 'Twas an interview that the Seniors had with the Class Sponsors, lim-t us draw the curtain of ch arity over the scene and say no more. Football season was soon over. Attention shifted to the bucket tossers instead of the pigskin pushers. Presi- dent Sadie Ann nmmw-al tu Olclulminu City, necessitating t he succession of our vice-prexy to the office. Rachel Britain was the fortunate or unfortunate, regarding your viewpoint, successor. Under her guidance the Class selected n. Basin-tbull Queen, With no great hopes, and amid the snickers of the Junior Class, who, it grieves me greatly to say, were Luo sure of themselves, the Class set Lo work. The result was: On the night of Fe-bruau'y 1, 1937. in the civic audito rium, Miss Anna. Mae Martin was crowned Basketball Queen by another members of the Senior Class, Jack Swink, captain of the Wolf Quintet. Even if S. ll. S. did comme our on Lhe short end of the score the beautiful and impressive coronation was not marred. Annu Mae was every inch a, QUEEN. From the tips of her silver toes to the top of her golden crown. she was royalty personified. A representative and outstanding member of the Class of '37, she was the best possible choice to represent the Class of the throne. Truly, this one triumph of the Class of '37, was a, gr eat one. The beautiful ceremony erased all disappoint- ment of pu:-st failures from the minds of those fortunate enough to be spectators of the coronation. The parade was led by the Shawnee High School band in their blue and white uniforms, followed by the Wolverettes, also in full regalia, with Dollie Hisel as cro wn-bearer. Then came the Junior float, beautifully decorated with purple and white, with Eloise Dunagan, the charming Queen, who wore a shining silver gown and carried a bouquet of orchid chrysanthemums. The rose and white Senior and Sophomore float followed, bearing the Senior candidate, Marjorie Norton and the Sophomore candidate, Kathryn Keller. When they reached the center of the field, the Wolverettes divided and formed a double line through which th-e Queen and her attendants passed, Miss Dunagan being helped from the float by Robert Henson, Junior class president. The Queen was met about half way down the silver path by Elmer Lee Gentry, foot- ball captain, who placed the crown on her head, was knighted, and escorted her to the throne, 'where she presided with her at- tendants for the remainder of the game. It is with pleasure that I view the completed Caldron for 1937. Having supervised the Work of the annual, I know the amount of labor necessary to complete it. Each and every member of the staff has labored faithfully to do his or her part. I take this opportunity to extend my thanks to the staff and to Miss Ledford, our sponsor. The game was colorless until the third quarter when William Wallace, haltback, intercepted an Ada pass and ran 25 yards to score. El- mer Lee Gentry kicked the goal for the extra point, The game was played on a sloppy field but the Wolves greatly outgained the Cougars on ground plays while Ada was more effective in the passing attack. The line smashing of Gentry accounted for many gains. SHAWNEE 19, WEWOKA 6 The next opponent of the Wolves was the Wewoka Tigers. The game was played in the new Shawnee Athletic Stadium on a muddy field in a slow rain. Wewoka scored the first touchdown late in the first quarter. Early in the second period Shawnee recovered a fumble and Gentry made the touch- down, thus making the score 6-6. In the third quarter Gentry again scored after Shawnee took the ball on a blocked punt. Again in the third quarter Gentry scored, making the score Shawnee 19, Wewoka 6. The line plunging of Captain Gentry was outstanding. SHAWNEE 24, SEMINOLE 0 On Oct. 2, 1936, the Wolves with the able assistance of Captain Gentry and Vesper Ott, scored for four touchdowns. Oct. 9, 1936. the Shawnee Wolves adniinistered llristow one ol' the most crushing defeats ot' the year. The Wolves scored once in the iirst period. twice in the third, and once in the fourth as they inade one of their finest defensive showings of the season in turning hack every Pirate thrust, The Wolves so completely throttled the Pirate running attack that Bristow gained only 10 yards hy rushing the hall, Shawnee l-ligh scored six touchdowns hut unfortunately only four of thein count- ed. The running of Gentry was outstanding with Gentry scoring three touchdowns and Joe Turner scoring one. SHAWNEE 21, EL RENO 0 With hard tackling and hitting, the Wolves won their first Mid-Slate Conference gaine at El Reno. The Wolves threw a sturdy defense against the hard-hitting Indians that prevented E1 Reno front ad- vancing closer than 25 yards to the Shawnee goal. Shawnee's offensive was also outstanding. The Wolves enjoyed a wide superiority, gaining a total ot' 2535 yards to 135 for the Indians. The game was played at El Reno. Friday, Sept. 26, 1936. CAPITOL HILL VS. SHAWNEE. WON 7-0 The gaine's only score was made by Captain Elnier Lee Gentry late in the second Quarter hy virtue of a hloek .kicked by Hunter. He blocked an attempted punt front the Redskins' 20-yard line. Although the Redskins rolled up 154 yards to G4 for the Wolves, the charging line kept Capitol Hill from advanc- ing into dangerous territory. ..l, .,.1., LETTERMEN First Row: Hankins, ltlerriott. Gentry scored both touchdowns, one in the second quarter and one in the third, only after fine blocking and running of Turner, Ott a11d Crawford. While Gentry's great play was the outstanding part of the game, the great defense play of Joe Ogle, Al Hunter and C. H. Green was also very good. Ponca City outgained the Wolves, 202 yards to 114, by rushing but did not have the necessary punch to win the game. WOLVES 0, CLASSEN 20 As the Wolves came off the field at T-aft Stadium, Nov. 6, their seven game winning streak was shattered by Classen. Shawnee was defeated because it encountered a hard running, hard tackling Comet team, which would not be denied when chances presented and because the Wolves themselves could not take advantage of opportunities. The play of Gentry, Hunter, Ott, Stewart, and Green was outstanding for the Wolves. SHAWNEE 13, CENTRAL 13 Friday, Nov. 13, the Wolves played a 13 to 13 tie in probably what was the most thrill packed game of the season. The Wolves were the first to score in the first period as a result of a. pass from Ott to Hunter. Gentry kicked the goal, but Central was not long in knotting the score before the half ended. In the fourth period, Joe Turner caught a pass and made the second touchdown for the Wolves. A few minutes later Central tied the score again. The Wolves were pushing toward another score as the game ended. NORMAN 26, SHAWNEE 0 A powerful Norman High School football team crushed the Wolves 26-0. The Tigers used spinners, and reverses with precision and power moved through the Wolf defense for a single touchdown in each of the first two periods and then topped off their scoring with a two touchdown barrage in the third quarter. The play of Al Hunter who went into the game at end near the close of the first quarter. and Othel Merriott, who did a great job of kicking was outstanding for the Wolves. Due to an ineligible player on the Norman High School team. they were forced to forfeit the game. This turn of incidents put the Wolves in a tie with Central for second place in the State. McALESTER 0, SHAWNEE 32 On Thursday, Nov. 26, 1936, the Wolves played their final game of the season when they ontplayed the McAlester Buffaloes 32 to 0, with the Wolves scoring twice in the first period and once in each of the remaining quarters. The whole Wolf squad saw action in this game.
