Q V073 E: ' 3 ff' 'ff f ' 'tx A I HIS has been an eventful year, one that shall go down in history. lt has been a year chuck full of moral and Hnancial readjustments in education and in the world gen- erally. Those of us who cannot make the necessary readjust- ments are unfortunate and will indeed be miserable. NVe should. however, allow ourselves time for this readjustment, and do so calmly and thoughtfully. Sudden or forced changes in attitude are dangerous. XVe should not destroy the old plan of education until our new plan is completed. Not all the old principles of education are obsolete or inadequate. Nor is it altogether wise to keep out of things in order to econoniize or to adjust ourselves to the new order of living, but rather we ought to get into worth while activities and aggressively promote them. Let us learn first ot' all how to use most advantageously the knowledge we already have to the greatest possible good for the greatest possible number. O. A. We realize that we have fulfilled our duty and have justly earned a vacation. Reluctantly though, we put aside books in order to take part in a much needed rest. Members of this year's Sophomore class will look back in years to come with fond recollection of these class days. We have been well represented in all High School activities. Bud Krueger upheld the standards of the Sophomores in football, being on the Varsity squad. Helen Ludolph, Florence Ainsworth, Jane Chaimson, Evelyn Soyck, and Florence Kroenke placed in the declamatory contest. Walter Smith, Allan Druckery and LaRue Smith were on the Sophomore debate team which defeated the Freshmen. LaRue Smith was a very capable cheer leader. We had a Sophomore basketball team which made a very good showing. We gave a party for the Freshmen to get better acquainted with them. WQEM I. I F. Due to the elimination of the model room this year's class was not able to do quite as much practice teaching as was done in former ycarsg however, under the new system, each Cadet was given sufficient opportunity to gain teaching experience. The large enrollment made it impossible for Miss McGill to handle the class alone so Mrs. lirener helped out teaching a class each day. NVe are sure every- one appreciates the sacrifices the teachers have made to make this year as pleasant as it has been, both from the social and academic point of view. As was d-one in previous years, each cadet was allowed to teach one week in various schools of the county. The results were remarkably favorable, regardless of the fact that much motivation was missing. Both the boys and the girls of the class made arrangements for basketball teamsg but for reasons unknown the girls were unable to carry out their plans. Because of the splendid co-operative spirit which existed. many social gather- ings were enjoyed by all. 6 . 5511 ' I gf-V' ' ui 152' ciivitie K N 4 p Q'x F A lg? The purpose of the club is to promote an interest in Chemistry. All Chemistry students are eligible for membership. Due to the large number of students enrolled, it was voted to have three meet- ings a month, on XVednesday evenings at seven o'clock, with alternate boys' and girls' meetings and one joint meeting. At our tirst meeting we held our initiation. The plan of the initiation was to emphasize that students of science have little use for superstitious practices, but rely on the five senses for the explanation of facts. This was carried out by taking a trip through the various rooms that contained objects appealing to the five senses: Namely, sight, feeling, smelling, tasting, and hearing. At our meetings we perform interesting experiments and discuss modern scientific problems. Several trips to local industrial plants were planned. . It has hung there for four years, and on it were inscribed the names of Orvis Schmidt, '29, Glarus Sloniker, '30, John Huntington, '31, and james Larson, '32. To have one's name inscribed, on the Balfour Trophy is the highest honor which can be given to a graduating Senior by Shawano High School. These students were outstanding members of their respective classes in scholarship, loyalty, and achievement. This springtime, by a vote of the high school faculty, another name will be inscribed on the Balfour Trophy. It is the name of a student who has always stood high in his class in scholarship, who has been one of the leaders of our debate teams and in extemp speaking, and who has always played leading roles in our dramatic work. This year he will represent the Oshkosh District in the state finals in oratory. He is listed in the decalet of leaders in the National Forensic League. His attitudle toward these many activities, toward the faculty, and toward his school has always been most loyal. It is with pleasure that the SHAWNEE announces the election of Samuel Chaimson for the Balfour Award. Legion Award R-oy Otto has been chosen for the American Legion Award over his class- mates. Otto has participated in athletics for four years and has won letters in football, basketball, and baseball. There are Hashier athletes than Otto but none more reliable. His attendance record at practice for three years has been nearly perfect. His class averages are very good considering the extra-curricular activi- ties he has participated in. Arlow Moede, Fritz Wolf, and Joe Koeppen were other boys who ranked high in athletics and scholarship. In fact, the twelve grad- uating letter men have all established enviable records a.t Shawano High School, and Otto should feel more honored because he has been chosen from such a fine group. wg xx THE SHAWNEE X '3i f '?T 'N Y' Calendar - 1 ., SEPTEMBER - 12-Golden rule days begin! Varsity Squad 1933 goes clown in our history as a. year of championships. Our husky foot- hall squad fought its way to the conference championship. An indication of our strength was our victory over Oshkosh and our close loss at the hands of XVILLISZLII. Such pillars of strength as Utto, Moede, Koeppen and Gueller will he missed next year. But Fossum, Grignon, Smith, Hedges and Krueger form a nucleus of great promise. The Gold footballs awarcled the boys stand for devotion to the game, hard. hard work, rigorous training and a will to win, that could not help but make Gl1arrity's squad a winning one. WAUsAU The third game of the season al- though our Braves out-played the opponents, Wausau High, and scored first, a disappointed crowd saw the local gridders defeated, 14-13. Flashes of excellent playing shown by line and backfield. Felts and Chubby Grignon made the touchdown and Osborn kicked the extra point. MAYVILLE Ray Dunn, the local boy who made good, brought his undefeated team here for a hard won victory, 13-6. Even though we lost, we've got to give our lads credit for some excel- lent playing, and we're proud of 'em. Augie Meifert our Galloping Ghost excited the spectators with some spec- tacular running. STURGEON BAY After three successive defeats, the Gharrity men turned the tables blast- ing the Homecoming hopes of Stur- geon Bay High School. Grignon's work at pass throwing was very ac- ceptable in spite of a drizzling rain. Meifert was the feature of the game, running 45 yards for a touchdown. CLINTONVILLE - After a slow start at the beginning of the season the team begins to look as though they might go places this year. Touchdowns were made by Wolf, Grignon, Meifert, Derr, Wag- ner, and Hedges against our old rivals. The line play was beautiful to watch, and gave the Homecoming crowd something to talk about. WEST DE PERE With both teams taking to the air in spite of a cold rain, the spectators got more than their money's worth. Long pasess and long runs were re- sponsible for the four touchdowns, Koeppen scored twice and Meifert once. Fossum's great defensive work won the spotlight. New LONDON Playing on a snowy field, and with the temperature nearly freezing, Shaw- ano defeated New London and there- by tied with East De Pere for the Conference Title. Red Derr scored twice, Helges once. Although they were handicapped by the cold, our boys showed some excellent playing, and fully proved their right to the title of Co-champions. 5 Xxx if THE SHAWNEE .t7.'l'i,fww Football Personnel ROY GTTO-Captain Utto proved his worth as a Cap- tain. There were about fifteen men out all season and they surely worked hard. They started out the season by a win over the Sopliomores. They were de- feated by East Green liay twice and shared two games with Franklin .lunior High. They were beaten by the XVhite Lake li team but Hnished up the season in a whirl of glory and beat the Sophomores again. As in football the men out for Freshman Basketball show a lot of promise and we predict big things for them in the years to come.
