His parents were among the pioneers of that county having moved to that county from New York state in 1354. This was 1 before there was a railroad into St. Paul and people were obliged to come up the Mississippi river from 1 Galena. Ill.. by steam boat. Ilis i boyhood days were spent about as farmers' boys' usually are. Ile as- sisted in the farm work during the vacation periods and attended tllv district school when in session. which was usually about seven months ol' the year. At the age ol twenty he began teaching in the country school.
