GREETINGS FROM THE PRESIDENT .Wx rmnlsrorr 'N nvuAnrrATt R , 65 '+?l4 rI.3 ff f 1' QE: or R 4 113' , f ylllw it -lf ' 9 f - , 'W is 7 stu' sb 14 K Dr. Stanley H. Smith, President The Shaw University To The Class of 1981: A yearbook should be a reflection andfor a microcosm of the activities of a college or a university. This year's produc- tion of the Shaw University Bear Yearbook exemplifies just that. It mirrors the basic philosophy of Shaw University with its emphasis on the learning process. It is congruent with Shaw's basic educational philosophy that education should be a living process and should be useful. It demonstrates, moreover, that education should establish functional linkages between theory and practice with the underlying assumption that the importance of knowledge lies in its use. More specifically, it is additionally reflective of the basic assumption of Shaw University that it is possible to be liberally educated for the world of work as its curriculum provides meaningful answers to the philosophical questions posed by the educational philosophies of W.E. Dubois and Booker T. Washington. Shaw University holds to a holistic view of education by drawing no significant distinction operationally between aca- demic and non-academic activities. All of the activities represented in this yearbook are, therefore, geared towards their learning implications for students and contribute greatly to making the whole college environment conducive to learning. Congratulations are, therefore, in order for making the publication, in terms of content and coverage, representative of the mission and purposes of Shaw University. Sincerely yours, Stanley H. Smith

Sherrill, Chairman Trustee Board of Shaw University FAREWELL TO THE GRADUATES-1981 After four years of sojoum within the walls of this historic in- stitution, you depart to enter into a rather turbulent world. We trust that these four years have been a period of mental, social, moral, and religious discipline that has prepared you for the larger school of life. Here you have been sheltered, there you will be exposed, here you have been guided by teachers and counselors, there you must look for guidance from within your- selves. Your training at Shaw University was designed to fit you for service to others and not to yourselves, but If you give to the world the best you have, the best will come back to you. We admonish you to give your best in whatever area you have the opportunity to serve, however humble your task may be, for it is the quality of the man that dignifies the job and not the job the man. You go forth with the blessings of your Trustee Board of Shaw University upon you, and may you prove yourselves wor- thy of being numbered among her illustrious sons and daugh- ters. Farewell!
