P R M E 5 E I S D S E A G E N T Sl Dr. Stanley Smith, President To The Class Of 1979: This year's production of The Shaw University Bear Yearbook is of particular significance to Shaw University and to me. It marks, hopefully, a turning point in the long and glorious history of Shaw University. This is my first year as President of this illustrious University. I assumed this position with the firm belief and conviction that Shaw will be one of the outstanding institutions of higher education in the future. This can only be done with your help and cooperation and those of all members of the Shaw Family. I am, therefore, deeply appreciative of your aim and objective to maintain quality production of this issue of the yearbook at reduced cost. Shaw's commitment is similar. It aims for quality edu- cation with a real concern for fiscal accountability and responsibility. Your objective of achieving excellence in the production of this issue, also parallels the University's thrust for excellence in performance and achievement by students at graduation time. Shaw's educational commitment will be to take students where they are and move them to an exit point of excellence in perfor- mance with a mastery of the basic academic skills but structured in the direction of meaningful career goals. This concern for career goals for our students is again in keeping with the historical roles and functions of Shaw, which started out as a professional school with degree granting power in the areas of Theology, Medicine, Law, Pharmacy, etc. For these reasons, this year's issue of the yearbook has commemorative and symbolic signifi- cance and I am very proud to be associated with it.
