DEDICATION OF THE 1979 SHAW BEAR For his words of encouragement, dedication and lengthy serviceg for his faith in Shaw University, for his concern for the welfare of Shaw University, and for being there when we needed him, the Bear Yearbook Staff has unanimously selected Mr. Mack Sowell for the dedication of the 1979 Shaw Bear. Mr. Mack Sowell is a resident of Selma, N.C. He is a 1964 graduate of Shaw University from which he holds a B.A. degree in English. While a student at Shaw, he was president of the S.G.A. in 1964. He also held membership on the Shaw Bear Staff, English Club, school newspaper, Dramatic Club and Who's Who Among American Colleges and Universities for 3 years. In his career at Shaw, he has served as career placement counselor, residence hall director and co- director of student life. From 1973 to the present, he has held the position of Director of Student Life and Development. His professional career includes an Adult Teacher Training Certificate at N.C.S.U. in 1968, teaching French and English in the public schools of Johnston County H964-701, leading inservice workshops in language arts and foreign lan- guage for Johnston County Schools in 1967. He was elected to the city council of Selma, N.C. in 1969 and was the first black to hold that position. Mr. Sowell, or Dean as we best know him, was listed among the Outstanding Men of America in their 1973 edition. For the Shaw University Family, this still holds true today. He is married to the former Mary E. Womack and they have two sons, Malcolm and Reuben.
